Chardonnay bubbly in three versions

Koch Winery in Hajós–Baja wine region makes traditional method sparkling wine of Chardonnay in three versions: there is a brut one, an extra brut one and an extra brut without disgorging. This last one is undoubtedly a unique drink even for the experienced sparkling wine drinkers. The fine lees give complexity and richness to a sparkling wine, but we get rid of it in order to obtain an attractive, clean and bright drink. And what if we do not remove the fine lees? It is an adventure, try it! But in moderation, since the fine lees can give headache if you are sensitive, but with one-two glasses there is no need to worry.
The grape was picked by hand from the vineyards around the estate building in Borota, Hajós–Baja wine region. Currently the 2023 vintage is available, abundant in citrus notes, mainly grapefruit along with green apple and some hazelnut. Elegant, complex and exciting sparkling wine with elevated acidity.
The retail price is around 28 EUR.

Koch Winery: No1 Grand Estate

The 14th annual selection organised by Bor és Piac trade magazine has just ended. In the first round readers could nominate their favourite estates, then the nominations were grouped according to the estate size, and the finalists have been visited and judged by a presigious jury (full of highly qualified professors of MATE University). The Most Beautiful Wine Estate in the Grand Estate category is Koch Winery in Hajós–Baja wine region.

Csaba Koch, owner of Koch Winery represents the 10th generation of a grape grower family. He bought the farm, where the estate building is located in 1996, it is a 100-year-old place now, certainly with every modern amenities. Though Csaba respects traditions, he is a man of the present with ambitions to constantly seek the better. “Our word changes dynamically, the climate changes rapidly so we have to adjust the grape varieties accordingly. And the consumers’s taste changes even faster, we have to watch the market” – says Csaba.

Time travel at Koch

The winery has 8 guest rooms, 7 of them are stylish, modern rooms with all the amenities, but one of them is a unique place: the “cooper’s flat” is suite furnished with original pieces from the 19th – early 20th century. You can experience the way our ancestors used to live, you can touch antique tables, chairs, utensils, even clothes, which tell countless stories.
Also, we highly recommend to try the traditional plates from the stove oven. The duck or knuckle is roasted together with potatoes and vegetables, the flavours are unforgettable.

Koch: the home of the happy grapes

The Koch Winery has been dealing with viticulture and wine production for generations. It is located in Hajós region, Borota. The modern winery manages 140 ha, it produces 27 types of wine and sells 800.000 bottles in a year. In 2014 the Koch Winery won the Winery of the Year award. It has a wide range of outstanding wines including Cserszegi Fűszeres, Rosé, Cabernet Sauvignon and Kadarka. VinArt Winery is been created in Nagyharsány to process its grapes suitable in Villány.

Koch Winery has implemented his own vineyard techniques regarding canopy management in Hajós–Baja wine region. The owner and winemaker, Csaba Koch studied biology, he is an oneologist and agricultural engineer, and his main concern is the vine and its wellbeing. The main point of the special grape growing method is that after a srtict pruning and canes tying (sylvoz training system), buds are not hid, the free growing of the vine is not obstacled in any way. The result is a relatively big, airy canopy that grows according to the needs of the plant around the wires. The plant grows as much canopy as it needs for the optimal photosynthesis. A small proportion of the leaves is cut at the end of the summer. The result is high quality and low costs, since the vineyards saves a lot of manual work. The vine plant is happy, because it can absorb and use as much sunshine as possible.

The sparkling stars of our cover photo

Béres Tokaji Méthode Traditionnelle Brut 2019

The winery has collected several great acknowledgments recently, like the highest scores for Hungarian wines at Decanter World Wine Award. This bottle fermented is made of 100% Hárslevelű, which is less typical in Tokaj wine region, than sparklings made of Furmint. “Dry, fresh, yet with a very rich palate with hints of apple, pear, peach, citrus, and rhubarb with a strong minerality that lingers in the finish along with grapefruit-like citrusy and tart green apple characteristics.”

Garamvári Lellei Furmint Brut

This family-owned winery was the first use Furmint variety for bottle fermented sparkling wines. Back then it was made of Furmint from Tokaj, and they keep on producing it, but this wine is made of Furmint from the South shore of Lake Balaton. This sparkling wine has been chosen the best traditional method sparkling wine of the latest edition of the Hungarian National Wine Contest. “The base wine come from just opposite the winery from Balatonlelle. The Furmint is an excellent grape variety for sparkling wines. The variety has outstanding acidity in our wine region and our soil has similar characteristics as the soil of Tokaj region. Here the grape has more fruitiness and lighter aromas. It bears a very strong character with refreshing citruses, green apple and creamy, biscuit notes.”

Holdvölgy Hold and Hollo Uppp 2024

The winery makes outstanding quality dry and sweet wines, unforgettable Tokaji Aszú wines as well, while Uppp is the playful face of the estate, an aerated sparkling wine with only 9.7 g/L residual sugar, made of Zéta and Hárslevelű. “The 10th vintage of our sparkling wine, dressed in orange, is explosive with its subtle and dynamic bubbles. The nose is filled with floral notes, citrus, and peach, evoking a vibrant fruit medley. The palate is crispy and flavourful, featuring peach, pomelo, and refreshing pink grapefruit. A lively and charming Hold and Hollo experience.”

Koch Chardonnay Brut, Extra Brut and Brut Nature 2017

The above described three sparkling wines are all made of indigenous grapes, while the sparklings of Csaba Koch are made of Chardonnay. It does not mean that he is not keen on local grapes, on the contrary, he has Kadarka, Irsai, Cserszegi and many other wines made of local grapes, but for the Champagne method sparkling wine he wanted a Champagne variety. He makes three types of sparkling Chardonnay: a brut, an extra brut and a brut nature – this latter one is unfiltered, really exciting and complex! All of them spend one year with the lees in the bottle. The best is to try all of them along each other…

The “asparagus and Sauv Blanc time” of the year

Our wine educator used to say that Sauvignon Blanc is a variety easy to recognize even for beginners. It is true, and how delicious that revelation is! Though there is a trend to focus on local grapes and rediscover ancient varieties, it is nice to have stunning guest grapes. And guests should be treated well: we give them great soil, plenty of sunshine and loving care. Taste Sauvignon Blanc wines from different wine regions to discover the differences! Dubicz from Mátra wine region, Koch from Hajós–Baja and Frittmann from Kunság. This is the season of dishes made of fresh asparagus – an ideal pair of Sauvignon.

In Hungary there are 957 hectares under Sauvignon Blanc (source: HNT 2023), it is the 14th most planted white variety (out of the 125 white grapes planted in Hungary).

Frittmann Sauvignon Blanc 2023, Kunság

Welcome to the largest wine region in Hungary, Kunság! The Frittmann brothers, true pioneers, revived the region’s reputation with fashionable wines. János Frittmann’s accolade as Winemaker of the Year in 2007 and the estate’s prestigious “Winery of the Year” title in 2015 underscore their commitment to excellence. Though they concentrate on indigenous varieties like Irsai Olivér, Ezerjó, Cserszegi Fűszeres, or Kadarka, others alike, some international grapes are also cultivated. Complete your experience with a stay in their charming guesthouse, where every room beckons with warmth and comfort.
“In keeping with the Kunság wine region, our version showcases its fruity side: the nose is reminiscent of luscious tropical fruits such as passion fruit and lime. On the nose, this lemon-coloured wine is strikingly refreshing, with citrus and herbal notes accompanied by yellow-fleshed fruit. The body is halfway between light and medium, the acids are balanced and the alcohol content is appropriate for the type of wine. On the palate, small bubbles of CO2, citrus aromas and a fine spicy character balance the sweet fruit of musk melon and pineapple. Recommended as an aperitif, with fish, chicken and cheese dishes.”

Organic wine from Koch Winery

Castellum is a resistant grape with mostly “blue blood”: it has 50% Rhine Riesling among its ancestors. Koch Castellum is an organic white wine from “happy grape” – a concept developed by Csaba Koch, the owner of the estate.

Mostly noble varieties

Castellum – or Pannonia as it is also called – a grape created by multiple crossings in Serbia by Petar Cindrić, Nada Korać and Vladimir Kovač. As Dr. Petar Cindrić explained it on Agroforum.hu, only 6.25% of the genetic material of the variety comes from North American grapes (Vitis rupestris, Vitis berlandieri, Vitis labrusca, Vitis lincecumii) – this part gives the resistancy against fungal diseases. More than 90% comes from “noble”, Vitis vinifera: 50% Rhine Riesling, 12.5% Tramini and Bouvier and 15.6% from 8 different varieties (Itália, Afuz Ali, Chasselas, Clairette, Oeilade, Aramon, Alicante Boushet and an unknown variety).

To see the family tree of the tree, click here.

The taste of nature

“With conscious canopy management it took us four years of chemical-free cultivation to find the taste of nature in this wine.” According to the happy grape concept the vines are not forced into wires, they are allowed to grow as they want to use as much sunshine as possible. The wine is certified organic by Biokontroll Hungaria Ltd, which means that at Koch they use only sulphur, copper, water glass (sodium silicate), stone powders, plant extracts. They also use matured cow manure and green manure from papilionaceous flowers.

A digital brochure of results sent to key players of the wine world

It is not enough to win a gold medal at a wine contest, it should also be visible for the costumers and noticeable by the influential wine experts and more importantly by the members of the trade. At some international wine competitions, it is hard to find the results, the website search does not function or the operators do not upload the data of the wines correctly. On Winelovers Wine Awards website results are easy to search. Winning wines will be featured on the international Wine-Searcher website as well as on social media. They will also be communicated to the international press through press releases. What is more, the organizers send out an English language digital brochure with the results and the detailed descriptions of the gold winner wines to more than 10.000 trade members around the world. Therefore, the contest serves as important guidance to the wines of Europe, especially Central and Eastern Europe.

Step on the bridge between East and West

“Wine competitions are a great aid to the consumer – who is often confronted with so many wines to buy they find it difficult to choose. It gives the consumer guidance and confidence in their purchase if the medal winning wine has been scored highly by experts – says Rose Murray Brown, Master of Wine, judge at Winelovers 2022 and 2023. – The contests are particularly important in Central Eastern Europe as many of these wine countries are unknown to wine lovers as they are up-and coming. The contests help the consumers choose from a range of unknown names – and helps the producers promote their product as a quality wine.”

“Wine contests are a valuable tool both for the consumer and the winery, especially if the wines do not boast with notorious recognition, as it is often the case with hidden gems from the Central and Eastern European countries. Medals awarded wines in serious wine contests improve brand awareness and visibility, which is true “gold” for wine countries from the Central and Eastern European countries. It attracts the consumer’s interest towards less- known wines and sometimes helps the product sell better than a thousand words would do, in places where there is no sommelier or a specialised salesman” – comments Julia Scavo wine writer and sommelier champion, judge of the competition in 2022 and in 2023 as well.

“Throughout history, Hungary has always functioned as a bridge between the East and the West, and our winemaking traditions and skills are also well suited to playing a catalytic role in this field,” explains István Tábor competition director, adding that the region’s wines still need export opportunities and marketing specifically supporting exports. Winelovers Wine Awards also helps them to do this, since, as well as extensive communication in Hungary, the wine competition is also linked to increasingly strong international publicity.

Entries are now open for the 2023 Winelovers Wine Awards, and producers can enter by submitting the necessary details on the competition website.

Debrecen – the 2nd largest city of Hungary

Debrecen is only one and a half hour’s drive from Budapest, or it is even better – when participating a wine tasting – to go by InterCity train. Debrecen has an international airport as well. Debrecen is the second most populous city in Hungary. It used to be the parlamentary city twice in the history. The city has several historical buildings worth seeing, and a must see spot is Déri Museum, where the tasting event takes place. The museum hosts paintings by Mihály Munkácsy, one of the most important Hungarian painters. In summer, the Flower Carnival of Debrecen attracts thousands of visitors.
