Subtle white wines from Lake Balaton, bottle fermented sparkling made of Furmint, single vineyard Kékfrankos wines – Homola wines are more than worth trying. They are available in several countries, but the best experience undoubtedly awaits at their estate overlooking the lake. The season has started, Homola Wine Terrace is already open on Saturdays!

Pennsylvania – in 65 stores

“Google is your friend” – people open say, well, if you are a wine enthusiast, then “Wine Searcher is your friend”. It tells you where you can get your favourite Hungarian wine. In the US Homola wines are available thanks to two guys owning Credo Imports. They work hard to spread the word about Hungarian wines, and they spread the wines as well, quite efficiently. A partner of them, Fine Wine & Good Spirits sells Homola 100% Balaton white blend in 65 stores and online.
Homola 100% Balaton 2024 is made of local varieties: Tramini, Szürkebarát (Pinot Gris), Olaszrizling, and Sárgamuskotály from loess soil. A captivating fruit-forward blend with vibrant tropical fruit flavours with a subtle touch of saltiness, complemented by a crisp, fresh acidity.

In the lively city of Berlin

Berlin is one of the hottest cities of Europe, a must-go destination with vibrant cultural life and nigh life as well. Máté and Gábor, two Hungarian guys founded BorStore (bor = wine) in 2015, and they offer a wide selection of Hungarian wines from more than 50 wineries. From Homola they sell 6 wines, including Homola Cuvée Me 2024, a blend of Olaszrizling, Riesling, and Furmint. “It is made primarily from grapes from different parts of Paloznak, where the soil is mainly red sandstone and marga, typical of the region. Since 2023, the vineyards are under conversion to organic farming, and the harvest is done by hand. The wine was fermented spontaneously, the ageing is done partly in barrels, partly in stainless steel tanks. Everything that Cuvée Me contains is the pure essence of our terroir.”

Vibes of the vineyard – Paloznak

Homola is located in the village of Paloznak, near Balatonfüred, the capital of Lake Balaton district. The estate is a buzzing venue of events with music of different genres, with Paloznak Jazz Picnic in August being the most important, featuring renowned performers from all over the world. DJ sessions are also frequent, the first one is held on 28 March. The wine terrace has opened today, in March it welcomes wine lovers every Saturday. Do not miss the sparkling Furmint of the estate, new vintages are coming soon!

A place to find new favs

Borjour Magnum is huge indeed and features several relatively or actually unknown and / or new wineries, thus it is the best place to discover new favourites. For example, we have not heard of Rózsa Winery (Tokaj), Katalin Rábai (Neszmély), Neiner Cellar (Szekszárd), just to mention a few.

10 great wines to remember #9

Lake Balaton is a sea of white wines, mainly Olaszrizling (the grape of BalatonBor community wine), yet Homola Winery has proved that Kékfrankos black grape has a role around the lake. They make a whole range of Kékfrankos wines, and probably this single vineyard wine from the stunning Tihany peninsula is the most peculiar. No wonder JamesSuckling.com taster Andrii Stetsiuk had a crush on it!

Charming and elegant – Homola Tihany Kékfrankos 2019

“Among the Balaton reds, kekfrankos really shined, especially the offerings from the Homola winery, which come with a very transparent, terroir-driven character.” – commented Andrii Stetsiuk in his wine report. This unfiltered Kékfrankos is the fruit of a 30-year-old vineyard in Tihany Peninsula on the shore of Lake Balaton. A real volcanic wine as here the soils are mainly composed of basaltic tuff. The wine was fermented spontaneously in open-vats and aged in large barrels for 24 months. The result is a handcrafted charming and complex red wine with elegant acidity and a long finish.
Retail price in Hungary is around 15-17 EUR.

Date: 11 November 2025

Homola, a true gem on the north shore of Lake Balaton

As written above, over 30 wineries (or their US representatives) will pour their wines, and Homola Winery from the village of Paloznak is definitely one you don’t want to miss. The wines of the estate to be tasted:

– 100% Balaton, 2024 (white blend)
Don’t worry, it is not the taste of the water of Lake Balaton, but the most typical varieties of Balaton region. “A captivating fruit-forward blend from the Balaton Wine Region, featuring aromatic, local varieties: Tramini, Szürkebarát, Olaszrizling, and Sárgamuskotály. This wine showcases vibrant tropical fruit flavors with a subtle touch of saltiness, complemented by a crisp, fresh acidity.”

– Homola Cuvée Me, 2024 (white blend)
An elegant white wine made of Olaszrizling (Welshriesling), Rhine Riesling and Furmint. It is primarily made from grapes grown in different parts of the village of Paloznak, where the soil is predominantly red sandstone and marl, which is characteristic of the region. From 2023 onwards, the vineyards will be converted to organic farming and the grapes will be harvested by hand. The winemaking process uses natural and modern methods, ensuring that Cuvée Me contains pure terroir.

– Homola Kékfrankos Tihany, 2018 (varietal red wine)
Varietal red wine made of Kékfrankos, even though nowadays Balaton is more a white wine region. Yet, recent successes prove that the climate of the large, light blue lake combined with the unique soils of Homola winery of red sandstone, limestone, marl and basaltic tuff, this latter especially in Tihany, where the grape for this wine comes from. “This unfiltered Kékfrankos is the fruit of a 30-year-old vineyard in Tihany Peninsula on the shore of Lake Balaton. A real volcanic wine as here the soils are mainly composed of basaltic tuff. The wine was fermented spontaneously in open-vats and aged in large barrels for 24 months. The result is a handcrafted charming and complex red wine with an elegant acidity and a long finish.”

Pannonhalma Archabbey – yes, the abbeys love wine!

Do you know how much a “hemina” of wine is? “Hemina is the proper daily amount of wine – if you drink it, you find God, but it is not enough to make you vulnerable for the devil’s temptation.” According to the explanation of the team of the winery, Saint Benedict’s rule does not define the exact amount… (Read more here.) So, if you enjoy well chilled wine on the stunning wine terrace of Pannonhalma Archabbey Winery, you do not have to have remorse, as long as you consume your own Hemina…

Sauska – fine dining on a flying saucer

“Stars in the sky, stars in the glass. Sparkling wine bar above the Tokaj vineyards with a view of the universe.” The other end of the country, the other way of feeling good. While the previous three places are relaxed, why-not-sit-on-the-grass places, Sauska Tokaj is a stylish restaurant and wine terrace with award winning architecture and interior design. The estate building is the home of the winery as well, hard to believe, but the unique building is a functioning vinification plant with cellar to ferment the wines.

Where: Rátka 2722 hrsz (Tokaj wine region)
How to get there: By car it takes approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes via M3. By public transport take an Intercity to Szerencs, change into a passenger train to Mád and walk about 25 minutes. Long way, but worth it!
Opening hours: Both Padi restaurant and the Bar has terrace. Opening hours: Thursday, Friday and Saturday: 12.00–22.00 (between 16.00 and 18.00 only the bar is open), Sunday: 12.00–16.00.
What to taste: First of all, try some of the elaborated plates created by Attila Bicsár executive chef and Máté Gerák resident chef. The ‘Tribute to Tokaj’ is a 5-course menu, a great way to discover the treasures of Tokaj with plates like Padi apple pie with apricot jam, Aszú sabayon and vanilla ice cream, paired with Sauska Tokaji Aszú 6 puttonyos 2017. If you just pop in for a glass to enjoy the beauty around you, ask for a glass of Furmint Brut Vintage 2018 from the extensive wine list of Sauska products (including jeroboam bottles).
An event not to miss: The bar hosts several tastings including a Tokaj Sparkling Wine session, find contact below on the website. The venue is also available for weddings or other events.

The grandiose French wine expo begins today, and for the first time in Paris, Hungary is represented by the national wine marketing agency showcasing wines from 25 Hungarian estates. Wines of Hungary booths are located in HALL 4 / C 153. If you hurry, you can catch the Uncorking volcanic wines masterclass by Konstantin Baum MW from 10 am (Room 3, Hall 4). Find all the exhibiting Hungariasn wineries here.

Dubicz Vineyard and Winery, Mátra

This family winery in Mátra produces aromatic white wines typical of the region, but also single vineyard, complex beauties like Sárhegy Olaszrizling. The grape is Olaszrizling, and ‘Sárhegy’ (something like ‘Mud Mountain’ is the name of the vineyard. The current vintage is 2021, and this barrel aged wine has collected several gold medals. We visited the estate with Valeria Tenison wine writer, she was impressed by the wine and she gave it 89 points. “The palate is round and creamy with a perceivable oak influence, well-balanced by the refreshing acidity and bright fruitiness of garden pears and white apples.”

Eszterbauer Winery, Szekszárd

“Stories sell the wines”, this is the Number1 marketing rule, and this family from Szekszárd is full of stories! Actually, every single wine has a tale, heart-warming stories about long gone ancestors and funny figures of the society. The winery has won several national and international awards, and one of their specialities is Kadarka, they make several varietal wines of this variety, and obviously Szekszárdi Bikavér is a key product.

The estate has undergone a rebranding recently, read more about it here:

Sauska, Villány / Tokaj

This estate “cannot not win” when it comes to CSWWC, the most important contest of sparkling wines. The winery has a “leg” in Villány, in the southernmost wine region of Hungary with subtle, serious red wines, while the brand new Tokaj estate is a landmark now, an unmissable place. The third leg is the sparkling cellar in Budafok (within the capital, Budapest), where the traditional sparkling wines age patiently.

Tűzkő Estate, Tolna

Dr. Erdélyi Árpád, estate manager of Tűzkő Estate has explained in a recent radio interview that 140 hectares of their 180 hectares in total are located in the Szekszárd hills, even though the wine region is Tolna. He has also revealed that the Italian owners–Antinori and Mazzei–let the team make as Hungarian wines as they want.

Tóth Ferenc Winery, Eger

Eger is the Number 1 tourist destination in Hungary after Budapest, no wonder, the city is full of cobblestoned little streets, baroque buildings, all around the medieval castle of Eger. And of course, the wineries with their legendary red blend, the Egri Bikavér (Bulls’ Blood), and also the white counterpart called Egri Csillag (‘The Star of Eger”). Tóth Ferenc Winery makes a classic and a superior of this white blend, both of them are great at different levels. Egri Csillag Superior 2022 “is a superb reflection of Eger wine region, the cool climate, it reveals beautiful, ripened fruit and the refreshing acidity in a deep, layered wine. Our objective was to create a superior quality elegant white blend with long ageing potential.” A blend of Hárslevelű, Olaszrizling, Leányka and Rhine Riesling. Plus, the winery is an expert of chocolate and wine pairings, they work with a Hungarian chocolate manufacture.

Homola Winery, Balatonfüred

At the last edition of Winelovers Wine Awards international competition, the organisers launched a Buyers’ Program, which proved to be successful. More than a dozen importers / distributors were speed dating with the participating wineries, each encounter had to be done within 10 minutes. Half a year has passed, the organisers surveyed the buyers, and it turned out that the most successful winery was Homola Winery from Balatonfüred–Csopak wine region, Homola shipments have left–among others–to Taiwan and the USA.

Marcell – dedicated to the first grandson

One of the exhibitors of Borjour Magnum is the multi award winning icon winery from Villány, Bock Winery. József Bock founder has won what a winemaker can win in Hungary: Winemaker of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, the Most Beautiful Vineyard of Hungary and tons of gold and grand gold medals from national and international competitions. Yet, József Bock is not only the founder and leader of a winery, the president of Villány wine region, but also a happy husband, father and grandfather. Marcell is a method traditional sparkling wine made of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Hárslevelű. It is a brut nature bubbly, so no sugar was added. The sparkling wine is named after József Bock’s first grandson. The current vintage is 2021, its retail price in Hungary is around 13 EUR. Certainly, Bock Winery is first and foremost famous for its long aged, complex red wines, so do not miss them!
