Wine of the Weekend

Kurt István Taschner has been working for Chardonnay variety for a long time. He was the first to make bottle fermented ‘blanc de blanc’ in Sopron wine region, and his still Premium Chardonnay is the favourite of many wine enthusiasts. A true spring wine! The winery offers two types of visit and has two food options, see below.

Taschner Premium Chardonnay 2024, Sopron

Its golden hue is inviting at first glance, and its aroma reveals delicate oak spices and ripe, white-fleshed fruits. On the palate, fresh and lively, yet round and harmonious: juicy apple, pear, and apricot notes emerge, accompanied by a hint of vanilla and a soft creaminess on the finish. An excellent choice for mushroom dishes and poultry, but it also pairs wonderfully with bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin.

Sopron is only an hour by train from Vienna, 2.5 hours from Budapest, and the gorgeous city is well worth a visit! Kurst István Taschner offers several types of visits at the estate.

Wine tasting at Taschner

Do you want to taste diverse wines and learn about them, but a wine school cannot be scheduled in your life? In this case a winery tasting with a wide range of wines and with a patient “teacher” is a good option for you. Kurt István Taschner loves his homeland and he never runs out of stories about Sopron. Plus, we can find the whole “course material” in his cellar, from bottle fermented sparkling wines to natural sweet wines.
At the winery Kurt István Tascner offers two types of tasting package. The words Poncichter and Buschenschank are Swabian words connected to wine cellars. Sopron wine region is near the Austrian border, the traditions, words and of course meals are interwoven with German words. ‘Poncichter’ is a word used even nowadays for pubs selling wine, and the original form of the word is Bohnenzüchter, which means beangrower. ‘Buschenschank’ is a specific type of wine tavern where, at certain times, the proprietor serves wine produced on their own premises. The name derives from the ‘Buschen’, a bundle of green branches placed above the entrance gate, indicating that the tavern is open.

– Poncichter tasting: 6 entry level wine samples, mineral water, bread with olive oil. Price: 4300 HUF / person (around 11 euro)
– Buschenschank tasting: 6 + 2 wine samples (2 from the more exclusive and expensive wines), mineral water, bread with olive oil. Price: 8200 HUF / person (around 21 euro)
As for food:
– A rustic cold platter is available for groups of minimum 6 people for 4900 HUF / person (around 12.5 EUR)
– A plate of ‘Poncichter Ragout” followed by strudel as dessert is available for goups of minimum 8 people for 4900 HUF / person (around 12.5 EUR)

Poncichter Ragout recipe

Ingredients (serves 10)
– 1.50 kg pork shoulder
– 0.60 kg mixed beans (canned)
– 0.50 kg gherkins
– 0.20 kg bacon
– 0.10 kg tomato puree
– 1 kg red onion
– 0.30 kg bell peppers

Sauté finely chopped onions in diced bacon, then add the tomato puree, diced marinated bell peppers, and sliced gherkins. Add the liquid from the beans (which have been soaked and cooked beforehand) and simmer for 10–15 minutes. Season with salt, pepper, garlic, and a little hot paprika to taste. Add the beans and bring the ragout to a boil. In a separate pot, prepare a flavourful pork stew with less paprika, and once the meat is tender, combine it with the previously prepared bean ragout. The finished dish can be served with fresh bread, but it can be made more substantial by adding diced boiled potatoes.

‘Festivity of Flavours in Sopron’

Last year 10 restaurants joined the initiative, while this year we can find only two restaurants offering special pairings, Erhardts and Deák. The organisers hope to have more eateries joining the programme therefore it will be more than worth returning to the website of Sopron wine region. The text is only in Hungarian at the moment, however the pairings of Deák restaurant (in the photo) are translated into English as well, you can see them at the bottom, under the photos of the winemakers.
A place to find new favs

Borjour Magnum is huge indeed and features several relatively or actually unknown and / or new wineries, thus it is the best place to discover new favourites. For example, we have not heard of Rózsa Winery (Tokaj), Katalin Rábai (Neszmély), Neiner Cellar (Szekszárd), just to mention a few.

Sopron white and red blend

Sopron is the capital city of our westernmost wine region, near the Austrian Burgenland. And Sopron has a peculiar importance for Hungary: it is often cited as the City of Loyalty or the Faithful City. Fidelissima means “most faithful” in Latin, and Kurt István Taschner is undoubtedly a faithful and active citizen of the city, this is why he makes a white and red blend with the name Fidelissima.

The Faithful City

After the I World War the Treaty of Trianon attached Sopron and its surrounding villages to Austria, however a revolt broke out. Negotiations started with the help of Venice, and as a result a referendum was announced. On 14–16 December 1921 people over the age of 20 voted. The participation vas very high (89.5%), and the majority voted for staying Hungarian citizens – especially in the city of Sopron, where 72.8% voted for staying. It was the only case when the Treaty of Trianon was modified!
The Fire Tower in our cover photo is the symbol of Sopron, it is highly advised to visit with a museum inside and great view of the city. We once had the chance to taste Tascher’s méthod traditionnelle sparkling wine up there, with Kurt István Taschner himself.

Experimenting spirit

All the labels floating in the air in our cover photo are from Taschner winery run by Kurt István Taschner. Quite likely he is the only one to make varietal Pinot Meunier wine in Hungary, and also, he might be the only one using the variety called “Korai Piros Veltelini”. He obviously makes Kékfrankos, it is kind of obligatory in Sopron, in the city where for a while Blue Frank (meaning Kékfrankos) was a functioning currency. Zenit is a Hungarian variety to watch, Kurt makes a stunning sweet, late harvest wine of this grape. Irsai Olivér, the flamboyant aromatic wine of Hungary is always the first bottled wine of Taschner, and in 2024 it was chosen The Best New Vintage Wine of Hungary.

Zenit, a grape to watch

‘Zenith’ (in Hungarian ‘zenit’) is “the point of the celestial sphere that is directly opposite the nadir and vertically above the observer”. And also, Zenit is a Hungarian white grape with a potential to give refreshing yet complex wines. Taschner Zenit 2024 from Sopron is one of the 127 Hungarian gold medal winners from the latest edition of Berliner Wine Trophy.
The cover photo was taken by Kurt István Taschner in his vineyard.

Hungary is among the top 5 medal winner countries

Berliner Wine Trophy calls itself “the largest international competition”, but actually it is not. According to the website the organizer holds 4 different wine contest sessions (Asian Wine Trophy, Portugal Wine Trophy and two sessions of Berliner Wine Trophy with altogether 14 000 entered wines, while Decanter World Wine Awards received more than 18 000 samples last year.

Nevertheless, Berliner Wine Trophy is one of the most popular wine contests among Hungarian winemakers. This year 34 countries entered wines in the Winter Tasting, and Hungary is the country with 4th most medals after Italy (421 medals), Spain (335) and Germany (190). The 5th is France with 177 medals.

There are 5 Hungarian Grand Gold winners, all of them Tokaji Aszú wines. As for the dry whites, it is good to see that there are so many gold winner wines made of indigenous grapes, like Rózsakő by Borbély(Badacsony), Cserszegi Fűszeres by Frittmann (Kunság), Furmint by Tornai (Somló) and the star of our cover photo, Zenit by Taschner (Sopron).
See Berliner Wine Trophy results
Our article is to be continued with medal winner red wines of the contest from Hungary

Have you heard about Zenit?

Zenit is a crossing between Bouvier and Ezerjó grapes created in Pécs Research Centre in Hungary by Ferenc Király in 1951, but it was officially recognized only in 1976. Thanks to its good abilities Zenit is getting more and more popular. In Bükk wine region some young pioneer winemakers take Zenit very seriously.

Although Zenit is widely dispersed around Hungary, particularly in higher sites in Mátra, Eger and around Lake Balaton, the total area in 2008 was just 560 hectares. However, recently there has been an increase, in 2024 there were 660 hectares planted with Zenit. More and more wineries realize the potential of this grape, and the Research Centre in Pécs helps a lot – they even created a bottle fermented sparkling wine made of Zenit to show what it is capable of.

“Wines are crisp with flavours of apple and citrus but not overly aromatic; the best examples are potentially long-lived and subtle with a mineral edge.” (Excerpt From: Robinson, Jancis; Harding, Julia; Vouillamoz, Jose. “Wine Grapes”)

Tascher Zenit is a great and easy-to-fall-in-love example of the variety. The grapes for the wine came from Ranisch vineyard, one of the best plots of the estate. It was matured in stainless steel tank. The nose is abundant in notes of sugarmelon, apricot, a flowering meadow, but we can also detect some hints of of pear and citrus fruits and a touch of white pepper. The palate is dominated by white flesh fruit, with a pinch of bitterness of the grapefruit and some saltiness. A perfect partner of grilled vegetables and chicken dishes. The alcohol is rather high, 13.5%, but the juicy flavours balance it nicely.
Taschner won another gold medal with his Chardonnay Premium 2023.
Why to participate? Borjour Magnum is one of the most favourite events of the wine enthusiasts. The atmosphere is always casual, relaxed, and to wander around is like gold mining: guests can discover new releases by well know wineries and totally unknown, small wineries with great passion. Borjour Magnum is an event of joy, the joy of having cool winemakers making wines to enjoy, not somewhere in the ivory tower, but here, with us, for us.

Marcell – dedicated to the first grandson

One of the exhibitors of Borjour Magnum is the multi award winning icon winery from Villány, Bock Winery. József Bock founder has won what a winemaker can win in Hungary: Winemaker of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, the Most Beautiful Vineyard of Hungary and tons of gold and grand gold medals from national and international competitions. Yet, József Bock is not only the founder and leader of a winery, the president of Villány wine region, but also a happy husband, father and grandfather. Marcell is a method traditional sparkling wine made of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Hárslevelű. It is a brut nature bubbly, so no sugar was added. The sparkling wine is named after József Bock’s first grandson. The current vintage is 2021, its retail price in Hungary is around 13 EUR. Certainly, Bock Winery is first and foremost famous for its long aged, complex red wines, so do not miss them!

Some of our favourite photos and some comments from the winemakers

A Drink Business journalist contacted us to ask for more information about the record harvest in Hungary. As the OIV report states, 2024 vintage produced the smallest global output since 1961. Except for Hungary, celebrating the highest production since 2010! Is that true? No, it isn’t, as we explain it below. But the main objective of this post is to give a picture of this year’s harvest in Hungary through the photos and the words of the people, who are behind the figures. Just look at our cover picture: the creativity of the winemakers is indeed outstanding!

Photos of the cover picture by Csetvei Cellar, Fehérvári Wine Estate, Zsirai Winery

What happened to the numbers?

When the British journalist contacted us, we called a representative of the Council of the National Wine Communities to ask about the reason behind the strange and false positive harvest figure. She checked, the 2024 estimates are correct, but as she spotted out, the figures of the earlier years are incorrect. They are available on the website of the Council here. (In Hungarian, but it is easy to understand, the bottom line is the national wine production.)
However, in the OIV report (page 6) the numbers are different, they are much lower regarding the previous years.
See the OIV report here.
As it turned out from the representative of the Ministry of Agriculture, they supplied improper data earlier, while the 2024 estimate is correct, this is why there seems to be an increase though there was not. The head of department explained that they had used the data of the Central Office of Statistics. It is still a mystery why the two offices have so different numbers…
But it is enough of the numbers, let’s see the people behind the figures!

Some comments from Hungarian winemakers about the harvest

Kurt István Taschner, Taschner Winery and Sparkling Wine House, Sopron

I have mixed feelings regarding this vintage, because there are some outstanding wines, but the fermentation of some red wines are rather complicated, actually we are still struggling with one of the red lots, the volatile acidity is too high and we are just guessing the reasons behind.
From grape growing point of view it was a good year with sufficient rainfall – occasionally there was too much, but at least the deeper layers of the soil received rainfall as well. We had to spray 7 times, with that we could protect 98% of the crop, which was healthy, and the quantity was slightly more than last year.

Tamás Borbély, Borbély Family Winery, Badacsony

Harvest 2024 was unusual due to the early ripening. In Badacsony wine region we started picking one month earlier than normally, at the beginning of August. The hot and dry summer was challenging, but with thoughtful planning of the harvest serious quality musts of great flavours arrived in our vats and barrels. Now we are working hard to present the fresh, new vintage wines as soon as possible.
The quantity of the crop was less in our estate – just like in the whole country –, however, the quality is great, on some cases outstanding.

Ákos Kamocsay, Fehérvári Wine Estate, Somló

This harvest was the earliest ever, regarding both the beginning and the finish. Due to the hot and dry summer, the sugar level rose quickly, and acidity disappeared rapidly. For the sparkling wine base wine, we picked the grapes in the middle of July with ideal qualities. After that practically everything ripened at the same time. As for the aromatic varieties, in some cases we lost some of the intense aromas, but with the other varieties we managed to pick perfectly ripened grapes. All in all, it was a very early and very quick, but good harvest.

Andrea Gere, Gere A Winery, Villány

The estate gives a detailed vintage report every year, here are some excerpts: “Due to the intense ripening, this year’s harvest started on the 1st of August, 2-3 weeks earlier than in previous years. There were no breaks between picking the raw material for the white, rosé and light red wines, so we had a continuous and dynamic harvest. In keeping with tradition, we finished the harvest on 26 September with grapes for the full-bodied red wines.
The warm summer weather concentrated the grapes, the musts were very ripe and a serious, characterful base is now developing in the cellar. When we asked our winemaker, Csillag Bankó, about her favourite grape of the year, she replied: “Every year a different grape is my favourite. This year my favourite is Cabernet Sauvignon. We harvested beautiful grapes at full ripeness and the measurements showed excellent parameters. But what really tipped the scales was how delicious it was.” All in all, we had a fast and intense season and the dynamics of the harvest reflected this. The quality and quantity of the harvest were in line with our expectations. The 2024 vintage will certainly offer wine lovers beautiful, full-bodied wines.

Kata Zsirai, Zsirai Winery, Tokaj

“I usually start harvest totally stressed, and older winemakers of the neighbourhood would comfort me with a piece of wisdom: Time heals everything. By now it has become my favourite saying, but no one has said that this time span can be like ten years! Anyway, I don’t say that it has been an easy vintage, but at least we could harvest and we have new vintage wines in the barrels. Dry and sweet as well, not too much, but at least many different types.”
Do you know what ‘csiger’ is? Kata explains. “We have been thinking of ‘csiger’ for a while. It is a low alcohol drink made by soaking the marc of the grape in water). This we have been able to produce it, because we had time. Usually, we don’t. Mainly because an important vineyard of us was killed by the August hail (actually for the third time), so we did not harvest there. But the good news is that we have a little ‘csiger’ in the house, already bottled!”

Krisztina Csetvei, Csetvei Cellar, Mór

“In Mór wine region we started the harvest on 25 August, three weeks earlier than last year. We had a dry, drought-stricken summer, as a result with organic viticulture we have had nice, healthy crop, better than last year both in quality and quantity. Harvest season was extra hot, picking was exhausting. Due to the early morning heat, we had to pick early and very quickly, and we had to process the grapes extremely fast as well. We finished harvesting very early, on 12 September, and now I believe that it would have been better to finish it even earlier than that. I would have liked to ferment all my wines to dry, but I can already see that the wine of the last harvest day from our Somló vineyard will not ferment spontaneously. Fans of our Drágakő wine will be happy – we are going to have a barrel aged Olaszrizling from Somló rich in residual sugar again! Sweet and salty:)”

Attila Götz vineyard manager and Járos Jarecsni estate manager / chief winemaker of Béres Vineyards, Tokaj

The vineyard manager explained that the year 2024 was difficult and there was a constant threat of mildew. The protection of the plants had special importance this year. The chief winemaker was sort of worried about low acidity and too fast ripening, as it can happen in extremely hot and dry vintages. This is why they decided to start harvesting early and they did not regret it at all. “We kept analysing the mock-harvest results, and we did start harvesting early to avoid extremely elevated must grades and to preserve the crispy acidity of the wines. Regarding quantity, we are somewhat behind the expectations, but quality-wise we consider it a really good vintage.”
