Villa Sandahl Ball of Fame Rhine Riesling 2017

While most white wines are consumed young, the queen of white grapes, Rhine Riesling should age to reach her peak. Ageing gracefully results in complexity and richness combined with elegance. This is why Villa Sandahl does not rush to the market, vintage 2017 is still on sale, though it is their „senior” wine on the shelf now.

Three consecutive miraculous years

Villa Sandahl is a peculiar estate in many ways, one specialty is that they have a different set of labels every year, and always there is an inspiration. In 2017 it was magic, because, as they say „this is the third year in a row that we produce very high quality” – it is a kind of magic… And what is the ball here? „The Sandahl ball has many times been a symbol for how Villa Sandahl see itself as located out of the box. Now a magician has taken over the ball to illustrate our best wine from 2017.” Indeed, the Sandahls are out of the box not only with their ever-changing labels, but with their focus on one single grape, namely the Rhine Riesling. We can confidently say that Villa Sandahl is the only winery (with significant presence on the market) with wines made of only one grape variety. If you check the website of the winery, you will see that even one single grape can offer countless opportunities depending on the vineyard, the date of harvest, and also the fraction of the must to be used.

How it evolves with time

The data sheets of Villa Sandahl wines are gold mines for students of wine: they detail not only the dates and characteristics of the harvest or the analytics, but they also contain tasting notes written by the owner, Christer Sandahl, at different times. According to the first tasting (January 2019) the wine has fantastic silky character, very balanced and it „is surprisingly open to be our highest quality, which normally use to be closed and shy at this point of time.” In 2021, according to Christer Sandahl it is already a „grown up”, and „surprisingly well developed (even with our own standard), clean, open, nice, well-made, refreshing, all such attractive characteristics”. And now? „Full and creamy sip, long finish, petrol, citrus, quince with honey, dried peach.”

The 3rd edition of Winelovers Wine Awards international wine contest took place at the beginning of July with a parade of wine experts from Taiwan to the US. On 14 September the wine enthusiast public can meet the producers of many medal-winner wines and certainly they can taste as many as they can comprehend. The venue is the 5-star glamorous Corinthia Hotel Budapest, the very same place where the contest took place.

Let us introduce the WWA medal winner wines of the cover picture wineries

Eszterbauer Winery (Szekszárd)

The family winery in Szekszárd won 6 medals, 1 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze medals. Mesterünk 2021, the gold winner wine is a varietal Merlot (the bottle shot in the cover photo features the 2019 vintage, which was a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc). It aged for 19 months in small barrel. The grape came from Görögszó vineyard, and the wine is produced only in the best vintages. It received 90 points! ‘Mesterünk’ means ‘Our master’ and it refers to winemaker László Pálinkás’s grandfather and tutor, a great professional.

Fehérvári Wine Estate (Somló)

The estate won 1 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medals. The gold winner is Fehérvári Magnum Brut (NV), a bottle fermented sparkling wine made of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Furmint and Hárslevelű. “Our Reserve Brut Magnum sparkling wine carries both the exclusivity of traditional sparkling wines and the innovative curiosity of our winery. An exciting specialty that offers a wonderful sight as moonlight pearls in the glass with a yellow colour. In its complex aroma, juicy peaches, pears and citrus appear at the same time, with toasty, mature aromas in the background. Its fruitiness creates harmony with the biscuit flavours, which end with a creamy finish.”

Heumann Winery (Villány)

Villány family winery has vineyards in the Siklós part of the winer region and produces elegant, outstanding quality wines. At this year’s WWA the Heumanns won a gold medal for Terra Tartaro 2018 (with 91 points), while Laguna 2018 received 88 points and a silver medal. Terra Tartaro 2018 is made of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, from 15–30-year-old vines. The soil is mainly loess with high proportion of limestone. Destemmed, alcoholic fermentation and malolactic fermentation in temperature-controlled steel tanks at 28-30° C; matured in Hungarian barriques (225 l) and tonneau (500 l) for 24 months.

Pannonhalma Archabbey (Pannonhalma)

The legendary winery of the Benedictine monks collected not less than 6 medals: 2 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals. One of the gold winners is the super elegant flagship red wine, a wine that wins whatever contest it enters: Infusio. The 2021 vintage received 90 points. And Pannonhalmi Hemina, a white blend from 2022 received even more, 92 points! The blend is made of 50% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Blanc, 15% Sauvignon Blanc, and 15% Viognier, aged in 500 litre Hungarian oak barrels. “The wine is based on Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc that ensure the full body and the creamy structure, ornamented with the calcareous minerality and the delicate notes from the aging in used barrels and enriched by the lively fruitiness of Viognier and the vivid acidity of Sauvignon blanc. It is a complex and rich wine that can even develop with bottle ageing.” We wrote about Hemina, the story of the name here.

Vesztergombi Cellar (Szekszárd)

The founder Ferenc Vesztergombi and his son, Csaba make stunning wines that are frequent protagonists of every top list and medal chart. At WWA they won a gold for Bodzás Merlot 2019 with 91 points, and 2 gold medals as well: Vintage 2019 and St László Bikavér 2021. The grape for this wine came from ‘Bodzás’ vineyard, hence the name (‘Bodzás’ means ‘Full of elderflowers’). A west facing slope planted in 2000, with vines at 230–250 metres above sea level. The soil is mainly red clay with some limestone pieces. Aged in 300L and 500L barrels for 24 months and 6 months in bottle before release.

Villa Sandahl (Badacsony)

This unique estate in Badacsony collected 2 gold and 2 bronze medals at this year’s Winelovers Wine Awards. Uniqe, because the Swedish owned estate produces only Rhine Riesling wines, but what Rhine Rieslings! The king of white grapes feels great on the volcanic soil of Badacsony, and now it is proved again. Roses darling 2022 and Out of the blue 2022, the gold winners have not been released to the market yet, we have to wait. Freya’s Amulet, one of the bronze winners is available and we had the chance to taste this amazing wine. Complex, juicy, luscious Rhine Riesling with several layers. At Villa Sandahl each vintage has a different topic that appears on the labels, 2020 is about gods of the Old Norse era. “Freya is the goddess associated with love, beauty, fertility, and sex (symbolized on the label with daisy flowers and bees), but she is also a brutal warrior. ”

Zsirai Winery (Tokaj)

The winery run by the Zsirai sisters collected a bronze and a gold medal, and the gold winner is also the best white wine made of indigenous grape, namely of Hárslevelű: Zsirai Középhegy Hárslevelű 2021 received 95 points! ‘Középhegy’ (‘Middle Mountain’) stands for the vineyard, a windy, cooler ‘cru’. (Read more about Középhegy here.) The wine fermented spontaneously and aged in Hungarian oak barrels for 10 months. It has 8.5 g/l residual sugar and 7.4 g/l acidity. “ In addition to the elegant acid structure and minerality characteristic of the vineyard, the typical linden leaves come along nicely.”

To make your glass half full

One of the most peculiar estates of Hungary has been making astonishing wines for two decades. From only one grape variety – Rhine Riesling –, yet several different wines are made every year, and when they enter a contest, they come home with gold. The boutique winery has a guest house as well with stunning view of Lake Balaton. The September event will take place in one of their most beautiful vineyards.

This estate is not only passionate, rather maniac about Rhine Riesling. They believe that this noble variety has found great foundation in the volcanic soiled wine region on the north shore of Lake Balaton. The wines are gorgeous, elegant and complex, and the winery has a guest house with stunning view of the lake. A must-go place, especially in spring time, before the region is flooded by tourists.

Paradise for wine geeks

If you think that only one single grape variety makes a boring range, you are mistaken. Villa Sandahl uses different fractions of the must for their different range wines, plus the date of the harvest, the length of ageing in the bottle – all taken into consideration. What is more, all this immense amount of information is given on the website, wine geeks can deep dive into all these details.

On top of that Villa Sandahl is full of stories, and these stories are grouped according to vintages. Every vintage has a different label theme: for example, vintage 2017 is about magic. As they say: “This is the third year in a row we produce very high quality and consequently the feeling begin to get magic”. Vintage 2018 features traffic signs and vintage 2019 is all about birds. The star of our cover photo is called Starling Village, named after the hungry thieves of the vineyards.

“Hungry starlings longing for grapes always swarm above our vineyards in the autumn, to get full before moving to Africa. This vintage was extremely sunny and rain-free, so the birds refused to leave as long as we had unpicked grapes. The label theme then was decided to be “birds”. Starlings are very social and flock oriented, thus like to settle in a village of bird boxes.”

Badacsony & Villány

Zengő wine bar will host a tutored, seated tasting of a flight of 5-5 wines from each winery. Zsolt Palkó, the chief winemaker of Villa Sandahl in Badacsony has proved his talent with countless acknowledgements. He also cultivates his own tiny vineyard of 3.5 hectares with great success (see James Suckling’s 90 points below). Heumann, the Swiss–German couple is well known for their outstanding quality red wines from the Siklós part of Villány wine region. La Trinità Cabernet Franc is one of their flagship wines – it will be a unique experience to taste it along with Palkó Cabernet Franc, the same grape but absolutely different terroir! Tickets are still available in limited quantity.

A “magnum” tasting indeed! A few tickets are still available for the tasting today, afternoon on 17 February.

The organizer team – and a series of smaller and larger scale events – is called Borjour, which obviously rhymes with the French Bonjour, while ‘Bor’ means ‘Wine’ in Hungarian. Borjour launched this event in 2010, which makes it the oldest indoor wine event, and also with the largest indoor wine exhibition.

Heimann Family Estate /Heimann & Sons, Szekszárd – a challenging harvest with quality above expectations (the first certified organic crop of all of their Kadarka and Kékfrankos plantations).

Csetvei Cellar, Mór – Krisztina Csetvei is well known for her creativity, just look at her last year’s harvest photo here, and this is a “simple” picture to announce a new wine store in Budapest. Csóka wine shop will sell wines of Csetvei as well.

Barta Winery, Tokaj – Another Furmint Photo production, reflecting the creation of a great wine from a great vineyard (Öreg Király (‘Old King’ in Mád, Tokaj). “Handpicked, pure Furmint and Hárslevelű grapes are cultivated in harmony with nature and treated with the least intervention possible.”

Sauska, Tokaj – This one is the New Year’s post of the estate, part of a series of similar pictures reflecting the “Sauska style” accurately. “Wishing you a year of peace, good health, and great bubbles. Happy New Year!”

Dubicz Winery and Vineyard, Mátra – Margot Robbie actress was on a diet during shooting the new Barbie movie, yet she did not restrain herself from a glass of wine or two. The Dubicz girls were impressed by the movie – so which wine is in the picture in miniature format? See here.

Garamvári Vineyard, Balaton – this year the estate producing a wide range of still and sparkling wines has placed emphasis on the feeling of enjoying sparkling wines in their creative campaign.

Villa Sandahl, Badacsony – each vintage has a different theme on the labels of the estate. 2017 is about magic – Crystal Cut 2017 Rhine Riesling label features the crystal ball of a fortine teller. “We can’t see the future, but with this picture we wish you a very happy New Year” – commented Villa Sandahl team.

The annual wine tasting organized by Vince wine magazine team seems to be a great success – the basic entrance tickets are sold out, only some combined tickets are left. Wine is art – so let’s go to the art gallery

The venue of this tasting undoubtedly elevates the event to another level: Vince Gala takes place in the house of the most important collection of pieces of art in Hungary, in the Museum of Fine Arts at Heroes’ Square. At the moment there is a Renoir temporary excursion, the organizers created a “Renoir tour with wine”, however, it was sold out immediately. Yet, Renoir exhibition is available to visit separately.

The concept: Vince Award

The magazine awards the best wines in 22 categories every year. The nominations are made by wine experts and Vince team, and the winners are decided by public voting, therefore the wine consumers have the final word. The event hosts the award ceremony, we will certainly reveal the results after Vince Gala. All the nominated wines are available to taste at the event.

Oh Deer 2018 by Villa Sandahl

A unique concept – new topic in each vintage

Villa Sandahl has a unique concept: each vintage has a different topic on the labels, thus the names are different also. Some say that it does not help the distributors, since by the time the customers learn the name of the wine, a new vintage comes with different names. It is true, however, with this concept, customers don’t have to memorize vintages. Oh Deer is the No1 wine of the estate from vintage 2018. From this vintage the top category wines of the estate are provided with a black capsule with golden letters of ‘SANDAHL’. The labels are designed by one of the owners, Christer Sandahl. Each label of vintage 2018 depicts a road sign. On the label of Oh Deer we can see the Swiss Matterhorn mountain and a road sign. Why? Here comes the explanation of Christer Sandahl: “Because of being upset when warned for a falling deer.” (On the cover photo the label inspiring mountain is featured along with the wine.)
