It has deep ruby colour. The intense aromas of fully ripe red fruit such as cherry and sour cherry is combined with smoky, toasty notes from barrel ageing. The complex, layered and fruit-driven palate is nicely balanced. It is harmonious wine with rich fruitiness, which is emphasized by the racy acidity. The fine-grained, ripe and integrated tannins give long ageing potential to the wine. A complex and layered wine that is also juicy and approachable. Do not wait to taste it!

Kővilla (’Stone Villa’) is situated on the southern slope of Villány surrounded by vineyards. This building has been the witness of several important events of our wine region – and the stone house inspired this selection wine of ours. A wine with a distinct personality. The nose is intensely spicy and has notes of vanilla, while its palate is determined by fruity notes: blackcurrant and blueberry. Concentrated and harmonious wine with long ageing potential.

“Cabernet Franc has found its natural home in Villány” (Michael Broadbent, Decanter 2000). Intensive on the nose, where the aroma of forest fruit and spices prevails. Intense scent of wild fruit basket and the sensation of spices. Its luscious, captivating flavours are accompanied by notes from the toasting of the oak, with blueberries and raspberries. It is a full-bodied but not cumbersome wine that carries the elegance of the variety. Real Villány wine!

Terroir, vineyard: Szekszárd, Baranya-valley vineyard. Old, mass selected Kékfrankos vines planted in 1969. 1.5 hectares at 200–210 m above sea level. Terraces of southeastern exposure. Thick layer of loess soil with high lime content. The grapes for this Kékfrankos are grown in the middle of the Baranya-völgy in vineyards enjoying abundant sunshine. With southeast exposure the valley opens to the Great Hungarian Plain so the grapes ripen early and yield consistently rich wines. The 50 year old vineyard was restructured in 2009. It was well worth putting the effort into the reconstruction, because a vineyard of this age has a great value in our wine region. The vineyard was cultivated during the socialist era, when quantity ruled over quality, yields were high and vineyard works were carried on less thoroughly – as a consequence, the vineyards were exploited to high extent. Since the reconstruction the vineyard gives balanced crop almost regardless the vintages.

Type of wine: Dry, Red

Grape varieties: Cabernet Franc and Kékfrankos (Blaufrankisch), approximately 50-50%

Alcohol: 13%

Acidity: 4.9 g/L

Extract: 24.9 g/L

Terroir, vineyard: All the grape comes from our own vineyard on Sabar hill, from a single, 1.5-hectare plot with about 0.9 hectares Kékfrankos and 0.6 hectares Cabernet Franc.

Harvest and technology: Both varieties were harvested on the same day, on 29 September. The grapes were soaked on the skin for about two weeks with constant pumping over. After pressing half of it remained in stainless steel tank, while the other half went to barrels of different size and age to obtain a fruit driven wine. Bottling took place at the very end of July.

Serving temperature: 13–14 °C

Bottled quantity: 3684 bottles

Cellar webshop retail price: 4500 HUF / 11–12 EUR

Story of the label: As Gábor Ádám owner explained, the label is based on a black and white photo taken in 1940 in a vineyard on Sabar hill. A friend found the photo in the family archive, and the picture features a jolly picnic. In the background of the photo, we can see the old bush vines of the era.
