Have you heard about the Island of Freedom? In Hungarian we call it Sziget (which means island, of course), and it’s the father, the ancestor of all festivals in the country. It’s our Woodstock, our Glastonbury, a festival attended by parents with nostalgy, by youngsters with curiosity and by tourists with fascination. This year it it will take place on 9–16 August, and a contract has been signed: there is a new winery partner of the festival, Kristinus Wine Estate from South-Balaton.

Wines that have already proved their merit

Kristinus is a state of art winery, which has created a special wine brand for the festivals.
– Sziget Fehér (Island White) was awarded gold medal at the regional Balatonboglár wine contest, and a silver medal at the National Wine Contest.

Sziget Rosé (Island Rosé) was warded silver medal at the regional Balatonboglár wine contest along with

Sziget Vörös (Island Red) won a silver as well.

The agreement between the organizer of Sziget Festival and Kristinus Wine Estate does not include only the August festival of Budapest, but all the other huge events organized by Sziget Ltd. this year and next year, for example two August festivals at lake Balaton, B.MyLake (23–26 August) and Strand (23–26 August).
Florian Zaruba, estate manager of Kristinus commented the agreement: „We are delighted to serve the visitors of music festivals with great quality wines from Balaton. For us the most important element of the terroir is the wine grower, who produces noble wines for Hungarian people – who are and have always been good at partying…” He added, that their mission is to give unforgettable „Balaton moments” with their wines regardless of location, and he claimed that adding soda water to the wine (so to make ’fröccs’, the Hungarian equivalent of ’spritz’) is not a crime. On the contrary: some bubbles can help open aromas of their wines!

More about Sziget Festival (from Wikipedia)

The Sziget Festival (Sziget, pronounced [ˈsiɡɛt] ( listen), is the Hungarian for “Island”) is one of the largest music and cultural festivals in Europe. It is held every August in northern Budapest, Hungary, on Óbudai-sziget (“Old Buda Island”), a leafy 108-hectare (266-acre) island on the Danube. More than 1,000 performances take place each year.

The week-long festival has grown from a relatively low-profile student event in 1993 to become one of the prominent European rock festivals, with about half of all visitors coming from outside Hungary, especially from Western Europe. It also has a dedicated “party train” service (with resident DJs) that transports festivalgoers from all over Europe. The second event (1994), labeled Eurowoodstock, was headlined by performers from the original Woodstock festival. By 1997 total attendance surpassed the 250,000 mark, reaching an all-time peak in 2016 with 496,000 visitors from 95 countries (the daily capacity having been raised to 90,000). It is now being increasingly labeled as a European alternative to the Burning Man festival due to its unique features (“an electronically amplified, warped amusement park that has nothing to do with reality”).

In 2011, Sziget was ranked one of the 5 best festivals in Europe by The Independent. The festival is a two-time winner at the European Festivals Awards in the category Best Major European Festival in early 2012 and 2015.

The National Hárslevelű Wine Competition took place on Friday, June 23, 2017. Wines from numerous wine regions in several categories were nominated for the competition. The results have shown once again that some level of residual sugar helps to bring out the best in Hárslevelű.

The winner is barely known

The panels made up of experts and winemakers judged wines from Somló, Villány, Tokaj, Mátra, Lake Balaton, Bükk and of course from Eger and Debrő. Gold medals were awarded in all categories and also a high number of silver and bronze medals. The proud winner of this year’s Double Gold award is István Gecse with his sweet 2014 Debrői Hárslevelű. The unique climate, the various soil types and tradition all contribute to making Debrői Hárslevelű a special wine, typically in the off dry category, with rich fruit and strong character. The ripe grapes endow the wine with a complex nose and opulent fruit beautifully balanced by lively acidity. Feldebrő is a small village in Eger wine region, north-east of Hungary, and István Gecse makes his wines here. He is not really known out of his region, he does not even have a website, however he offers bed and breakfast with wine tasting opportunity.

61 medals altogether

Though Hárslevelű is one of the main grapes of Tokaj, the fanous wine region was rather under-represented at this competition, while Eger wine region was over-represented – but it is absolutely understandable, since the contest was held in a village called Verpelét, in Eger wine region. Out of the 15 gold medals, 9 gold came from Eger region. Somló won one gold with Tornai Hárslevelű, and Tokaj won three gold medals. Mátra, Bükk won one-one gold, too.

Hárslevelű – the linden leaf wine

Hárslevelű is the other main grape variety in Tokaj besides Furmint, however it is widely planted all over the country, it can be found even in the southern Villány. Late to ripen, like Furmint, but with looser bunches. It has a thicker grape skin meaning that in dry vintages the botrytis attack it more slowly. Its wine is more aromatic than Furmint with delicate linden honey aromas, sometimes elderflower. Elegant, subtle wine can be made from Hárslevelű with refined acidity, creamy texture and a touch of spices. Its name is literally ‘linden leaf’ and comes from the shape of the leaf which resembles that of the tree. According to some recent DNA researches Furmint is the parent of Hárslevelű.

Pajzos Tokaj Late Harvest Hárslevelű from 2013 is one of the gold medal winners. A charming wine with tropical and floral fragrance and with the fine spiciness of the acacia. On the palate the honey notes are followed by a silky marzipan flavour.

Opinion from the jury and the winners

„The Jury had their work cut out as there were so many top quality Hárslevelűs entered this year from all over the country ranging from dry to sweet”, said András Főczény, President of the Verpelét Appellation. „15 gold and a large number of silver and bronze medals were awarded and the Chairmen of the panels have all confirmed that the wines in the competiton showed a good level of consistency.”

„Thanks to the special microclimate Botrytis may be a wonderful gift of nature”, said István Gecse, whose 2014 sweet Debrői Hárslevelű has won the Double Gold award.

János Bolyki’s 2013 Meta Téma Harvest I, II and III wines have all won silver and gold medals. „I have entered three Hárslevelűs and all three has won some medal. The grapes come from the same plot, the 3,7 hectare Középbérc-vineyard and from the same vintage. The difference lies in the timing of the harvests. There were three harvests, one in the middle of October, one at the end of October and one at the beginning of November with correspondingly ascending residual sugar levels.”

A megoldás: kirobbanó buborékok

As Best of Budapest reported, this year, in addition to the great line-up of concerts every Wednesday for 2 months at the Budapest Zoo, visitors now have a chance to taste wines from 8 different Szekszárd wineries before the concerts, adding an extra dimension to an already exceptional evening. Expecting summer heat, the winemakers are focusing on light and fresh wines like rosés and schillers, but also with an emphasis on Kadarka and Kékfrankos both sporting the new Szekszárd bottle. These fruit-forward, lively reds will offer refreshment even on a hot, balmy night.

The Zoo’s guest animal: a fox from Szekszárd!

Rosé is a refreshing wine in the summer, and Szekszárd has its own style of it, called schiller. It’s a Swabish tradition, winegrowers used to harvest red and white grape together, resulting a darker pink wine, which was often referred to as ’Fuxli’, because of the colour reminding of the fur of a fox. In Szekszárd most of the winemakers used to make Schiller only from Kadarka. This tradition came to life when producers of Szekszárd decided to bottle their cchiller wine under the name of Fuxli. And this ideal collaboration is not yet complete: they even promote each other’s Fuxli on every label to urge consumers to taste the other Fuxli’s as well!

In the current vintage (2016) six wineries made Fuxli: Eszterbauer, Garai, Heimann, Hetényi, Sebestyén and Takler wineries. Eszterbauer made its Fuxli of 75% Kadarka and 25% Kékfrankos. Flowery and spicy, light and vivid wine, ideal for a summer night.

The melodies they play come from various regions of Central Eastern Europe where the culture of Jewish music has deep roots.
Traditional and modern at the same time

Though the label looks ultramodern at the first glance, in fact it represents the traditional Swabish cross stitch embroidery and its motifs. These motifs can be recognized in all of the labels of Etyeki Kúria. Simple and great, and it can be varied forever in endless mutations!

Zweigelt – stunning inside as well

The grape Zweigelt is usually considered to be a mediocre, everyday, light wine not to be kept for years – at least in Hungary. In Austria we can find amazing, long aged, complex Zweigelt wines, and Etyeki Kúria Zweigelt 2015 is closer to the neighbours in its style. Fresh, fruity, elegant, yet complex, refined and quite long.

Date: 14–15 July, 2017
Location: Villány, Hungary
Type of event: funky running contest and rosé wine festival

Médoc Marathon in France is definitely „The” marathon for winelovers, however this little sister of the Bordeaux running contest in Hungary is fun as well. Runners dress in pink and run a modest 3 kilometres, meanwhile they can refresh themselves of course with some rosé „fröccs” (fröccs is the Hungarian world for spritz, wine with soda water). Villány is famous for its red wines, however summer is not the season of full bodied, long aged complex reds, so the wine region shows its more lighthearted face to the thousands of visitors who pilgrim to taste the rosé wines, participate in the short running and enjoy the music shows on stage – all in pink. The „marathon” will take place ont he 15th July, and you can enter online or ont he spot in the morning, and it is worth for sure, you can win for example a wine tasting in Bock Cellar or at Gere Attila Winery. Kids are also welcome to partcipate, they can win zoo tickets and other great rewards.

More than 20 wineries will offer their rosé wines in the centre of Villány, where most program will take place. Sauska, Csányi, Bock, Attila Gere are just some of the big names you can find in one place.

For accommodation, click here, you will find a list of hotels and bed and breakfast houses, only in Hungarian, but if you write to them, most of them understand some English.

Hungary has received 4 gold medals, one white wine (Tűzkő Chardonnay Barrique), two sparkling wines (BB Spumante Doux and Chapel Hill Chardonnay Brut) and one red wine from Villány (Cassiopeia Cabernet Franc). The special prize of the country went to Tűzkő Chardonnay.

6 silver medals – with Kővilla Cabernet Sauvignon again

Of the silver medal winners we can see a much higher proportion of red wines: 2 silver winners are sparkling wines, while 4 silver went to red wines. Kővilla Válogatás Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the silver winners, well worth it with its elegance, balance, wonderful structure, complexity and long finish. This very same wine was chosen Best of Show Hungary (red wine) at Mundus Vini 2017 in Germany among several other national and international great results. The wine was aged in 500 liter oak barrels for 18 months.

About Citadelles du Vin

The 17th annual Citadelles du Vin wine competition was held from 10–12 June, in Bourg en Gironde. Over the course of three days of competition, some 1074 wines (from 31 countries) were tasted. 45 tasters (representing 18 nationalities, among them some Hungarian experts) judged the participating wines. 178 Gold medals and 131 Silver medals (representing 28.7% of participating wines), as well as 21 Special Prizes, were awarded. The results and Special Prize winners were handed out on the eve of Vinexpo international trade fair, at Bordeaux’s Casino Barrière. Prizewinning wines were showcased throughout the trade fair on the Citadelles du Vin stand.

Organised since the year 2000 in Bourg en Gironde by the CDV (Concours des Vins, an association constituted in accordance with the French law of 1901 concerning non-profit organizations), Citadelles du Vin has excelled in promoting the incredible diversity and exceptional quality of ne wines from all over the world. The competition is named in honour of Aquitaine’s two magnificent citadels, both of which form an important part of the region’s cultural heritage: the Citadelle de Blaye and the Citadelle de Bourg, the birthplace of the competition.
