1. Bock Winery, Villány

An iconic cellar founded by József Bock (Winemaker of the Year 1997) with a wide portfolio. Bock 40 is a recent release made to commemorate József Bock’s jubilee harvest, the 40th one of his life. It is a Bordeaux blend (Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) aged in 225 L new oak barrel. The wine was selected among the Top 25 wines of Pannon broader wine region.

2. Csányi Winery / Teleki Wines, Villány

The winery was founded by the world famous viticulturist, Zsigmond Teleki. The largest winery of Villány wine region makes both top fine wines and approachable entry level wines. Their method traditional sparkling wine of Pinot Noir is super elegant. Teleki Tradíció Kopar Villányi Franc 2017 won gold medal both at Berloner Wine Trophy and at Frac du Monde Villány.

3. Etyeki Kúria, Etyek

A state-of-the-art winery in Etyek with stunnink Kékfrankos and with propbably the best Pinot Noir of Hungary. The estate is also among the top ones with their Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The head winemaker, Sándor Mérész has a project with experimental wines, like a natural Királyleányka, another one made of Zenit, an orange wine and many other exciting wines.

4. Frittmann Winery, Kunság

The winery was the first quality winery in the largest wine region of Hungary, the Frittmann brothers were the ones to put Kunság back on the map of quality wines. János Frittmann was awarded the title Winemaker of the Year in 2007. The estate concentrates on local varieties like the white Cserszegi Fűszeres and Irsai Olivér or the red Kadarka. Do not miss the method traditional sparkling wine made of the indigenous Ezerjó grape.

5. Holdvölgy, Tokaj

The estate is situated in the village of Mád, which has some of the most precious vineyards. Holdvölgy’s wine experience is award winner with an interactive, exciting cellar tour underground. At the last edition of Winelovers Wine Awards international wine contest only 4 wineries received 93 points, all for natural sweet wines, one of them is Holdvölgy with its Culture 2017. Culture is a 6 puttonyos Tokaji Aszú made of Furmint, Hárslevelű and Zéta grapes. Holdvölgy can boast with the highest dry white score as well: Intuition No3 2018 received 91 points.

6. Koch Winery, Hajós–Baja

Koh Winery in the village of Borota is the home of the “happy grapes”, a concept developed by the owner, Csaba Koch. The estate has a wide portfolio from fresh whites through rosé and light red wines to full bodied red wines (these latter ones come from the Villány vineyards of the winery, Csanád Cuvée is a great example with countless awards and gold medals. A recent hit is the unfiltered, bottle fermented sparkling wine made of Chardonnay, do not miss it!

7. Kristinus, Balatonboglár

The largest biodynamic estate of Hungary with all its hectares fully converted (62 hectares). The wines are made with the least intervention, with the most success. Their Kékfrankos is elegant, complex, a stunning example of the winery. Do not miss Analog, a white blend with fascinating complexity made of Sauvignon Blanc, Tramini and Olaszrizling or Kristinus Siller (in the photo).

8. Paulus Wine House, Mór

The largest estate of the second smallest wine region of Hungary. Pál (‘Paulus’) Molnár is the founder and owner, and the estate has won a lot of awards and gold medals recently, we can say they arrived at the Hungarian wine life like a comet. The prices are more than reasonable! Check out their rosé and Ezerjó wines.

9. Steigler Cellar, Sopron

The organic winery of Sopron wine region is relatively new, but a few years have been enough for them to gain reputations for their outstanding Grüner Veltliner and Kékfrankos wines. They also make Furmint, which is a rarity nowadays in Sopron. At the latest edition of Decanter Wolrd Wine Awards Steigler Premium Furmint 2020 received silver medal with 90 points: “Quince, red apples, and a note of Pepsi cola with some spice, bacon, and oak notes. A crisp, driven acidity provides energy.“

10. Tűzkő Estate, Tolna

The estate is owned by Marchese Piero Antinori, the renowned wine person from Tuscany. The estate makes lovely white and rosé wines at approchable price, but they are also well known for the top wines like red blend called Tűzkő Domb or their Tűzkő Chardonnay Barrique. The 2019 vintage of the latter wine received the ackowledgment of The Best Chardonnay of the latest edition of Winelovers Wine Awards.

11. Vesztergombi Cellar

Ferenc Vesztergombi of this Szekszárd winery was chosen Winemaker of the Year in 1993. Now his son, Csaba Vesztergomni is a nominanee, so there is a chance (1/5) that this winery will be the first in Hungary with father and son receiving the prestigious awards. Alpha is a recent hit, a top fine wine by Csaba from an extraordinary vintage, and already with several great prizes – but the whole premium line from 2017 is worth not only tasting, but collecting.

12. Vylyan Vineyard and Winery, Villány

One of the most famous estates of Villány with its own, super elegant style, and with a touch of art within the wine, on the labels and in the estate as well. Vylyan Variations is a family of experimental wines, the latest one is a duo pack of Cabernet Franc wines from 2020, one aged in barrel and the other aged in amphora. The barrel aged one is one of the 12 gold winner wines of the first Franc du Monde international wine contest.

Pécs – the city of wines, too

The 5th most populous city of Hungary, the sunny Pécs boasts with historic buildings of several religions: mosques, cathedrals, synagogues, churches. Lovely pedestrian streets, great restaurants, wine bars make your stay delicious, what’s more, the city has its own wine region as well, and in most places „pécsi” wines are available by the glass. Advent Wine Salon is held at Littke Palace, a historic building situated in UNESCO World Heritage Szent István square, and a building with wine background. Littke family used to produce sparkling wine – they claim to have made the first sparkling wine in Hungary –, and the recent owner aims to place the winery back to the limelight.

Z-summit and pop-up wine shop

Don’t be frightened, Z does not stand for zombies nor for Z generation – it stands for grape varieties crossed in Pécs Research Centre and happen to start with the letter Z: Zenit, Zefir, Zéta, Zengő, Zeusz (for more information find our Grape dictionary). Another imporant feature of the event is that it really wants to help guests with their Christmas shopping. Each admission ticket includes a 1000 HUF worth voucher, which can be fully used at the pop-up wine shop operated by Pannon Borbolt. As Zoltán Győrffy, chief organizer of the event told us, visitors had greeted this opportunity at the previous event, and he expects participants to buy even more this year. „The 1000 HUF voucher is absolutely motivating, and most of our visitors used it for rare wines, which are hard to find elsewhere.” Advent Wine Salon is a must-go event, and its success is increasing. „Besides the producers’ stands, there will also be masterclasses, product demonstrations and discussions on offer. It is no secret that we intend to develop the Pécsi Borozó Advent Wine Salon into one of the country’s most important indoor wine and food events outside Budapest” – communicates Pécsi Borozó, the organizing team about the event. Let us introduce three of the exhibitors!

Tűzkő Estate, Tolna

Antinori’s Hungarian estate, Tűzkő Estate is situated in the lesser known Tolna wine region, part of Pannon broader wine region, a hilly region with great white and red wines. The Estate is the 3rd Most beautiful Wine Estate in Hungary (Bor és Piac wine magazine contest, 2019), and last year Tűzkő Estate was selected among the Top 5 wineries of Pannon region by the wine lover public. How about this year? Will they also make it to the best 5? It will turn out on 7 December, since the award ceremony will also take place within Advent Wine Salon. And what to choose for Christmas? No question: Tűzkő Dumb Cuvée!

Teleki Wines

Villány is probably the most famous among the wine regions of Pannon region. Csányi Winery follows the path of the world famous viticulturist, Zsigmond Teleki, founder of the winery, and thus the wines are also named after the grape scientist, who played an inevitable role in rescuing the vineyards of Europe after the phylloxera plague.
