Wine of the Weekend

Borbély Family Winery blended Kéknyelű, the iconic and unique Badacsony grape variety with Rózsakő (‘Rose Stone’), a “child” of Kéknyelű and with Olaszrizling, the most planted white grape of Balaton. The wine has recently received an outstanding review from Vince Hungarian wine magazine.

Tomaj is a fairly new release by Borbély Family Winery, which is located in a small place called Badacsonytomaj, hence Tomaj refers to the place within volcanic Badacsony wine region.
Vince panel review: “Light greenish yellow colour. Good intensity on the nose with some pronounced minerality and stone fruits. A little carbon dioxide makes it even fresher. Medium body, firm structure, crispy acidity, good complexity, green apples on the palate.”
(16.40 pts, September issue)

More about Borbély Family Winery

A sip of knowledge about the “ingredients”

Kéknyelű

– This grape is exclusively grown in Badacsony wine region. Planting alternate rows with a variety such as Budai Zöld encourages more consistent pollination.
– In good vintages it gives elegant wine with creamy structure and subtle, fine acidity. Rare grape variety that is capable of giving exceptionally high quality wines.
– Kéknyelű is quite likely of Hungarian origin. Very popular among the winemakers, though it is hard to cultivate. It ripens relatively late, therefore it needs protection from the hungry games living in the forests of Badacsony and Szent György mountain. “Kéknyelű, meaning ‘blue stalk’ and referring to the slightly blue tint of the petiole, is an old variety probably originating from the Badacsony region in western Hungary. The alleged synonymy between Kéknyelű and the Italian Picolit mentioned in the Vitis International Variety Catalogue has been disproved by DNA profiling.” Excerpt From: Robinson, Jancis; Harding, Julia; Vouillamoz, Jose. “Wine Grapes (9780062325518).” iBooks.

Rózsakő

– This grape is exclusively grown in Badacsony wine region.
– The skin is rather thick therefore less sensitive than Kéknyelű, and more productive. It resembles Kéknyelű in its characteristics and can also give high quality wines.
– A cross between Kéknyelű and Budai Zöld develoved by Dr. Ferenc Király in Badacsony in 1957 – a most logical decision to cross these two grapes, since they are often planted adjacent to each other to improve pollination. The name literally means ‘Rose Stone’ and given after Róza Szegedi, a beautiful and intelligent woman who is known as the eternal love of the Hungarian poet Sándor Kisfaludy. The poet and Róza used to sit on a heart shaped basalt rock on Badacsony mountain enjoying the spectacular view of Lake Balaton. The stone is named after Róza, the grape is named after the stone.

Olaszrizling

– It is grown all over Hungary, in fact the most widely planted grape in the country, and popular in the whole Carpathian basin.
– It ripens rather late, in good vintages even shrivels. When young, there are flowers on the nose, on the palate full of flavours and there is a little bitter almond note in its aftertaste. It has a pleasant, refreshing acidity. Olaszrizling is capable of long barrel ageing.
– It was and is mistaken for Rhine Riesling, though it is a completely different grape. Its synonyms include the most common Welschriesling (Austria, Germany), Graševina in Croatia, Laški Rizling in Slovenia. It is quite likely to originate from the Danube basin, though there are numerous other hypotheses. Though it is the most widely planted grape of Hungary, it did not have a good reputation for a long time and while nowadays wonderful examples are easy to find in Hungary both in fresh and aged style.

We have introduced an “estate red” by Babarczi recently based on the panel tasting of the Hungarian Vince magazine. The tasting presented affordable red wines representing the “style of the house”. These wines are really worth trying, just like the star of our cover photo, which comes from Badacsony, one of the wine regions around Lake Balaton.

Back to black grapes

BalatonBor, the community brand of the wineries around Lake Balaton is made of Olaszrizling, the most planted grape of the region. It is white, just like the other popular grapes in the region, like Szürkebarát (Pinot Gris), Muscat Ottonel, Kéknyelű.
However, before phylloxera devastated the vineyards of Europe, Balaton was planted mostly with black varieties. Nowadays we live in an era when rediscovering ancient traditions and extinct varieties is a trend in the wine scene. Balaton producers have started to make red wines, not only to enlarge their portfolio and to have something for the duck and the beef dishes, but also because their forefathers did so.
Quite unexpectedly the winner of the above-mentioned panel tasting is a wine from Balaton by Zelna Winery from Balatonfüred. The wine is called Bárka and is made of Kéfrankos, Cabernet Franc and Merlot and indeed a great wine.

More about Zelna Winery
Meet Zelna in London at CEE Wine Fair

Borbély Oraculum Pinot Noir 2023

Vince magazine is quite close to me, because I used to be the editor-in-chief for 12 years. I know how rigorous the chief expert, László Romsics is, so I absolutely trust in the results printed in the magazine. What is more, my sister still works there, she is the tasting coordinator, and a guarantee of fair and professional judging. I remember our first Pinot Noir panel tasting, back in 2005. Well, almost all the wines were barely drinkable, our conclusion was that the Hungarian producers cannot handle Pinot Noir, this difficult variety.
Tasting Oraculum, I can admit that those times are behind us. The wine is excellent – as the magazine’s panel evaluated it, with 16.25 points out of 20, 4 stars out of 5.
“Vibrant nose with red berry fruits and a touch of vanilla and clove. Ethereal, lighter body, easy drinking, juicy, enchanting with moderate tannins and lively acidity. The palate is abundant in fruits: raspberry, redcurrant, sour cherry, forest fruits and again vanilla and clove.”
And where does the name come from? The idea came from Tamás Borbély’s wife. She suggested the name because an “oraculum” can predict the future, and maybe this wine can tell if black varieties have a future in Badacsony.

Borbély wines are available in Germany (ungarische-weinauslese.de) and in the Netherlands (wijndruppels.nl). If you are interested in importing Borbély wines, contact Tamás Borbély.

And the best place to taste Borbély wines?

Visit them in Badacsony, stay in the guest house among the vineyards and enjoy tranquillity!

Let us introduce the WWA medal winner wines of the cover picture wineries

Eszterbauer Winery (Szekszárd)

The family winery in Szekszárd won 6 medals, 1 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze medals. Mesterünk 2021, the gold winner wine is a varietal Merlot (the bottle shot in the cover photo features the 2019 vintage, which was a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc). It aged for 19 months in small barrel. The grape came from Görögszó vineyard, and the wine is produced only in the best vintages. It received 90 points! ‘Mesterünk’ means ‘Our master’ and it refers to winemaker László Pálinkás’s grandfather and tutor, a great professional.

More about Eszterbauer Winery

Fehérvári Wine Estate (Somló)

The estate won 1 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medals. The gold winner is Fehérvári Magnum Brut (NV), a bottle fermented sparkling wine made of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Furmint and Hárslevelű. “Our Reserve Brut Magnum sparkling wine carries both the exclusivity of traditional sparkling wines and the innovative curiosity of our winery. An exciting specialty that offers a wonderful sight as moonlight pearls in the glass with a yellow colour. In its complex aroma, juicy peaches, pears and citrus appear at the same time, with toasty, mature aromas in the background. Its fruitiness creates harmony with the biscuit flavours, which end with a creamy finish.”

Heumann Winery (Villány)

Villány family winery has vineyards in the Siklós part of the winer region and produces elegant, outstanding quality wines. At this year’s WWA the Heumanns won a gold medal for Terra Tartaro 2018 (with 91 points), while Laguna 2018 received 88 points and a silver medal. Terra Tartaro 2018 is made of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, from 15–30-year-old vines. The soil is mainly loess with high proportion of limestone. Destemmed, alcoholic fermentation and malolactic fermentation in temperature-controlled steel tanks at 28-30° C; matured in Hungarian barriques (225 l) and tonneau (500 l) for 24 months.

More about Heumann Winery

Pannonhalma Archabbey (Pannonhalma)

The legendary winery of the Benedictine monks collected not less than 6 medals: 2 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals. One of the gold winners is the super elegant flagship red wine, a wine that wins whatever contest it enters: Infusio. The 2021 vintage received 90 points. And Pannonhalmi Hemina, a white blend from 2022 received even more, 92 points! The blend is made of 50% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Blanc, 15% Sauvignon Blanc, and 15% Viognier, aged in 500 litre Hungarian oak barrels. “The wine is based on Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc that ensure the full body and the creamy structure, ornamented with the calcareous minerality and the delicate notes from the aging in used barrels and enriched by the lively fruitiness of Viognier and the vivid acidity of Sauvignon blanc. It is a complex and rich wine that can even develop with bottle ageing.” We wrote about Hemina, the story of the name here.

More about Pannonhalma Archabbey

Vesztergombi Cellar (Szekszárd)

The founder Ferenc Vesztergombi and his son, Csaba make stunning wines that are frequent protagonists of every top list and medal chart. At WWA they won a gold for Bodzás Merlot 2019 with 91 points, and 2 gold medals as well: Vintage 2019 and St László Bikavér 2021. The grape for this wine came from ‘Bodzás’ vineyard, hence the name (‘Bodzás’ means ‘Full of elderflowers’). A west facing slope planted in 2000, with vines at 230–250 metres above sea level. The soil is mainly red clay with some limestone pieces. Aged in 300L and 500L barrels for 24 months and 6 months in bottle before release.

More about Vesztergombi Cellar

Villa Sandahl (Badacsony)

This unique estate in Badacsony collected 2 gold and 2 bronze medals at this year’s Winelovers Wine Awards. Uniqe, because the Swedish owned estate produces only Rhine Riesling wines, but what Rhine Rieslings! The king of white grapes feels great on the volcanic soil of Badacsony, and now it is proved again. Roses darling 2022 and Out of the blue 2022, the gold winners have not been released to the market yet, we have to wait. Freya’s Amulet, one of the bronze winners is available and we had the chance to taste this amazing wine. Complex, juicy, luscious Rhine Riesling with several layers. At Villa Sandahl each vintage has a different topic that appears on the labels, 2020 is about gods of the Old Norse era. “Freya is the goddess associated with love, beauty, fertility, and sex (symbolized on the label with daisy flowers and bees), but she is also a brutal warrior. ”

More about Freya’s Amulet

Zsirai Winery (Tokaj)

The winery run by the Zsirai sisters collected a bronze and a gold medal, and the gold winner is also the best white wine made of indigenous grape, namely of Hárslevelű: Zsirai Középhegy Hárslevelű 2021 received 95 points! ‘Középhegy’ (‘Middle Mountain’) stands for the vineyard, a windy, cooler ‘cru’. (Read more about Középhegy here.) The wine fermented spontaneously and aged in Hungarian oak barrels for 10 months. It has 8.5 g/l residual sugar and 7.4 g/l acidity. “ In addition to the elegant acid structure and minerality characteristic of the vineyard, the typical linden leaves come along nicely.”

Thanks, Ollie!

Oliver Coleman, wine writer of JancisRobinson.com has recently visited Hungary, and he did his lesson, there is no doubt about it. His comprehensive article includes a detailed, easy-to-read historical background of Balaton wine region, and he really immersed in the stories of local winemakers to give an insider, detailed snapshot of the 6 subregions of Lake Balaton. Oliver also entered his article in the 7th Hungarian WebWineWriting contest, clearly not to gain votes, but to make the article published in one more place. His 102 wine reviews are 102 gems, useful material for all the winemakers.
(The cover photo features Oliver Coleman in Kistücsök restaurant, taking notes during the 2nd Hungarian Wine Summit.)

Kéknyelű, the “fickle grape”

The comprehensive Balaton article is available only for subscribers – well worth. Here we quote a few sentences from Oliver about Kéknyelű, one of the most peculiar grapes of the Lake, and we also quote three of the many Kéknyelű reviews by Ollie.

“…Kéknyelű is perhaps the most compelling, not least as an apposite analogy for the whole region’s revival. A female variety that needs a co-planted variety to pollinate, it’s a fickle grape that requires careful work in the vineyard and produces low yields (around 1 kg per vine). In the 18th century it was renowned but, by the late 1980s, only around one hectare remained in two micro-plots. The local viticultural research institute in Badacsony and a few tenacious producers saved it. Now there are 46 ha (114 acres) and interest is growing. Often quite subtle in youth with a stony, floral, herby character, it seems to really come into its own with age, opening into a toasty, burnt-orange and hay character after five years or more. An example from 2006 by Szeremley is still extraordinarily alive.”

Borbély Kéknyelű 2022, 16 points

From a plot on the Gulács Hill, where there is a little loam mixed with the basalt tuff. Fermented and aged for six months on the fine lees in eight-year-old Hungarian oak barrels (1,500 and 2,000 litres).
Quite expressive for the variety – fleshy, ripe nashi pears, red apples and lemon curd. Perhaps a hint of green pineapple, even. Similarly juicy on the palate with some broadness from the oak/lees. There’s a spiced edge – caraway and fennel seeds – and lively acidity to lighten the texture. Distinctive style of Kéknyelű and quite delicious.

More about Borbély Family Winery

Földi Bálint, Szent-György-hegyi Kéknyelű 2020, 16.50 points

Bálint Földi is a great believer in Kéknyelű – he even wrote his thesis on the variety. He is also the winemaker at Sabar but has small plots of his own vines. This one is from Szent György Hill, from a south-east-facing vineyard just below the tree line at the top. Whole-bunch-pressed – the juice gets a touch of oxidation in the press. Spontaneous fermentation in oak. Aged in Hungarian oak barrels for seven months. TA 6 g/l, RS 4 g/l.

An inviting nose of linden leaf, apple and apple blossom. A touch of toasty honeycomb, which melds beautifully with the appley fruit. Silky, oily texture. Lovely vein of vibrant acidity running through the palate. Ends with a hint of toffee apple and roasted fennel. Mouth-watering length. Great advert for the variety.

Szeremley Kéknyelű 2006, 17 points

A great vintage, according to winemaker László Szeremley. Whole-bunch-pressed. Stainless-steel fermentation with selected yeasts. Aged in large old vats (3,000– 6,000 litres).
Gorgeous aromas – quite a heady experience. Toast, lime cordial, honey, dried meadow flowers, linden leaf and a touch of petrol. Dried orange peel and almonds. Concentrated palate. This is still very much alive. The acidity is still so vibrant. Electrifying mineral spice on the finish. A tingling saline character remains on the lips. This wine may be something of a one-off, but it is a marvellous example of Kéknyelű’s ability to age under the right conditions.

Years by years several Hungarian wines are evaluated by the prestigious wine challenge (founded in 1989), and now the first ever comprehensive article has been published written by me, Ágnes Németh, owner and editor of Hungarianwines.eu.

Longer version accepted

On Hungarianwines.eu we often quote from other articles written about Hungarian wines, to make our readers curious and read the original article. Now the funny situation is that I quote from myself:)

“A small country with great pride, Hungary is home to 22 wine regions and more than 200 grape varieties. While domestic consumption has significantly dropped over the past two decades, producers are optimistic and seeking out new markets. Seasoned wine connoisseurs will undoubtedly find exciting wines by Hungarian winemakers, whether they are looking for indigenous rarities or outstanding examples of international varieties.”
It is an honour to have completed a work for this renowned wine magazine, and it is even more heart-warming for me that the longer version was published. I submitted the article of the required 1700 words, and another one of 2700 words, just in case. How can you squeeze a country into 1700 words? Certainly, an article like this can never be complete, but my aim was to give a basic introduction to this colourful wine country, and a snapshot of the recent wine consumption and export figures. Gilbert & Gaillard published an article about Tokaj in 2021, but this is the very first article about the whole country.
The magazine is in English, distributed in 22 countries, reaching hundreds of thousands of wine connoisseurs and professionals.
Thanks to Gilbert & Gaillard for the opportunity!

Celebrate rosé wines in City Park

Around 60 wineries pour rosé wines and bubblies in the sunny City Park for 3 days. The entrance is free including live music programmes, only an official Rosalia glass is needed to be rented or purchased, and then the festival-goers pay for the wines and food they consume. Three of the exhibitors – featured in our cover photo –: Borbély Family Winery from Badacsony, Dubicz Vineyard and Winery from Mátra and Garamvári Vineyard from South Balaton.

Greeting from the organisers

“Pack up your friends, colleagues and the whole family along with your dogs, and head for a picnic in the shade of the City Park’s giant trees. You’ll only need a blanket because everything else, from cooled rosé to chilled champagne, easy white, or refreshing spritz, will be provided by Rosalia Wine Picnic. On the last day of spring, we open the wine festival season with Budapest’s biggest, original, one-and-only garden party. From 31 May to 2 June, Rosalia Wine Picnic awaits enthusiasts of fine wines and trendy bites with numerous programs and discoveries in the capital’s most beautiful park.”

Find more information and tickets on the website
Don’t miss the Early Bird Deluxe pack – available until 21 May here.

“Kinnagangon” Rosé 2022, Borbély Family Winery, Badacsony

This easy-going rosé is made of Pinot Noir, and the name needs some explanation. ‘Kinnagangon’ is three words written together, reminiscent of colloquial spoken Hungarian. The meaning is just “being outside on the balcony”, but the sound of this made-up word also reflects the featherlight happiness of enjoying a chilled rosé wine in a hot, lazy afternoon.

More about Borbély Family Winery

Cabernet Sauvignon Premium Rose 2022, Dubicz Vineyard and Winery, Mátra

“In this elegant premium rosé, the delicious aroma of blackberry tempts us to taste it. In its taste raspberry, cherry, sour cherry and crispy acids are melded in a special harmony. It is not an everyday rosé experience!”1014 on the label refers to Mátra’s highest peak – which is actually the highest peak of our whole country.

More about Dubicz Vineyard and Winery

Lellei Rosé Gold 2023, Garamvári Vineyard, South Balaton

Garamvári Vineyards is a family owned winery specialised in still and bottle fermented sparkling wines. Lellei Rosé Gold is a still blend of Pinot Noir and Syrah from Balatonlelle, hence the name ‘Lellei’. A crispy, refreshing rosé abundant in red berry fruits, mainly raspberry and strawberry accompanied with vibrant acidity.

Enjoy this true spring wine at Sandahl Residence

This estate is not only passionate, rather maniac about Rhine Riesling. They believe that this noble variety has found great foundation in the volcanic soiled wine region on the north shore of Lake Balaton. The wines are gorgeous, elegant and complex, and the winery has a guest house with stunning view of the lake. A must-go place, especially in spring time, before the region is flooded by tourists.

Paradise for wine geeks

If you think that only one single grape variety makes a boring range, you are mistaken. Villa Sandahl uses different fractions of the must for their different range wines, plus the date of the harvest, the length of ageing in the bottle – all taken into consideration. What is more, all this immense amount of information is given on the website, wine geeks can deep dive into all these details.

On top of that Villa Sandahl is full of stories, and these stories are grouped according to vintages. Every vintage has a different label theme: for example, vintage 2017 is about magic. As they say: “This is the third year in a row we produce very high quality and consequently the feeling begin to get magic”. Vintage 2018 features traffic signs and vintage 2019 is all about birds. The star of our cover photo is called Starling Village, named after the hungry thieves of the vineyards.

“Hungry starlings longing for grapes always swarm above our vineyards in the autumn, to get full before moving to Africa. This vintage was extremely sunny and rain-free, so the birds refused to leave as long as we had unpicked grapes. The label theme then was decided to be “birds”. Starlings are very social and flock oriented, thus like to settle in a village of bird boxes.”

The Wine Merchant magazine survey

The British The Wine Merchant magazine has carried on a survey with the opinion of more than 200 of their readers. The magazine is for independent wine merchants, therefore the answers represent the independent wine business scenery.

There is some bright future according to the independent merchants: “Roughly half of all merchants saw sales increase in 2023, though with the average price per bottle of still wine rising by just 8p, to £15.78, the sector is not keeping pace with duty increases and inflation.“

The survey includes a ranking answering the question “Which countries or regions do you find most interesting?”Hungary ranks the 15th position with the same votes as California. While California went down by 5 spots, Hungary went up 5 positions compared to last year. What can be the reason behind? Probably the passionate Hungarian winemakers with their creativity, enthusiasm and dedication. (See chart below.)

Thanks to Malux Hungarian Wine and Spirits to share the chart.
