A place to find new favs

Borjour Magnum is huge indeed and features several relatively or actually unknown and / or new wineries, thus it is the best place to discover new favourites. For example, we have not heard of Rózsa Winery (Tokaj), Katalin Rábai (Neszmély), Neiner Cellar (Szekszárd), just to mention a few.

Wine of the Week

The phylloxera plague devastated the majority of the vineyards in Europe, just a few survived. Kunság wine region in Hungary has sandy soil, a type that the evil bug is not keen on, therefore vines can grow on their own roots. The oldest parcels of Frittmann Winery are situated in Faluhely vineyard, the plantations are more than 60 years old. This is where grapes for the barrel aged Ezerjó Selection come from.

MEET THE FRITTMANNS AND TASTE AT BORJOUR MAGNUM IN BUDAPEST ON 15 FEBRUARY.

Thousand reasons

The name Ezerjó literally means ‘thousand good’ and restricted to mainly two wine regions in Hungary, Mór and Kunság. As the Frittmanns say, “A thousand threads connect us to Ezerjó”. Most of the Ezerjó wines are fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks, thus the barrel aged Frittmann Ezerjó Selection is a unique wine in this aspect. “Lemon in colour, this wine displays notes of honey, butter and vanilla, as well as some yellow-fleshed fruit. On the palate, the aromas echo those of the bouquet, with toasted notes appearing alongside apple, pear and mango flavours. The latter give the wine a particular creamy character, but the main structural element is the straight and lively acidity. A spicy aftertaste lingers on the palate.” Certainly, the winery makes stainless steel aged, easy-going wine as well, what is more the estate makes a bottle fermented sparkling wine of the variety as well named Frittmann Gold.

More about Frittmann Ezerjó Selection

Guest house in the estate

Frittmann guest house has an ideal location for those planning to discover the region and indulge themselves in Hungarian traditions. Paprika is our most important and wellknown spice, and the little town of Kalocsa is the epicentre of the magical red powder, the Paprika Museum is also worth a visit. There is a Lace Museum in Kiskunhalas, another nearby town, while Kecskemét, the largest town of the area offers plenty things to see among others with the ‘Cifrapalota’ (something like ‘Pretty Palace’). Frittmann Winery has a guest house with some cosy rooms, and the vicinity to the tasting room is a serious argument for the place (just a few steps).

Fun fact: Borjour is not misspelled French ‘Bonjour’, but a pun, since ‘bor’ means ‘wine’ in Hungarian and ‘zsúr’ (the pronunciation of the French ‘jour’) is a kind of elegant, decent party with food and drink.

2021 Tűzkő white and rosé wines released

Tűzkő Estate is located near the village of Bátaapáti, among the hills of Tolna, near the river Danube. The winery is only 150 kilometres from Budapest southbound. The hills and the small valleys, along with the lakes of Szálka and Zsibrik create an ideal microclimate for grape growing. The majority of the historical vineyards of the estate is situated among the declivous hills of Völgység. The wines made here are famous for their aromas. The vines are grown on limestone and loess soil with good water managing qualities. The new plantations are situated near the villages of Mórágy and Mőcsény, where the given climate and soil characteristics are different, therefore they create the ideal diversity of microclimates for the estate.

The 2021 vintage white wines will be available to taste at Borjour Magnum. Do not miss the juicy Traminer, the refreshing Riesling and the crispy-fruity Kékfrankos Rosé!

Katalin Tóth of Tóth Ferenc Winery in Eger has long been practicing the „alchemy” of pairing chocolate and wine, and she has a relatively easy job to do so: partially because the winery has a wide range of wines from the fresh, crispy whites to the aged, full bodied red wines, and on the other hand because she has two friends to help her create the sweet delicacies. Viktória Szeleczky-Takács is a chocolate maker at Fabric Chocolate family chocolate business and Adél Bernáth-Ulcz blogger (CsokiLaBor), the creative mind behind the pairing. Bikavérmousse is a brand new creation of the trio: chocolate ganache is made with butter and cream (without eggs), and then it is flavoured with Tóth Ferenc Egri Bikavér Superior 2017, and served on sponge cake made of cocoa bean flour. Egri Bikavér is the famous red blend of Eger (also known as Bull’s Blood, though nowadays it is rarely translated because the English term refers to low quality, mass produced style of the wine before the 1990s), and at Tóth Ferenc Winery the 2017 blend is made of Kékfrankos, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Kadarka, Pinot Noir and Merlot. „Intense, rich and same taste on the palate as on the nose. The great acidity gives the real Eger character to the wine however the velvety tannins makes the wine pleasantly warm. Fruity taste complemented by slight bitterness of wild plum. A well structured wine with great potential and the promise of a long life.”
Taste Bikavérmousse and Egri Bikavér Superior together (with several other pairings) in Eger (24 January) or in Budapest (14 February).

Grand Tokaj and „the 100 scored king”

Károly Áts is one of the most famous Hungarian winemakers (his 1999 Tokaj Esszencia received 100 scores by Wine & Spirit Magazine and another 100 scores for 2007 by Robert Parker), and Grand Tokaj is the only state owned winery in Hungary, a so called „national treasure”, and also the largest winery in Tokaj wine region. The single vineyard Kővágó Furmint is a zesty, delicious, ample dry wine: „The refreshing character of the wine is nicely combined with the flavours of Furmint grape, and it is backed by the minerality of Kővágó vineyard in Mád. Due to new oak fermentation and maturation the palate shows some subtle smokiness, the body of Furmint grape along with its vibrant citrus character. Full bodied wine with great length – and some mineral-salty touch in the finish.”

Vesztergombi – expertise in magnum size

Borjour Magnum will host a masterclass with top wines in magnum bottles – obvious topic for an event with a name like this. Vesztergombi Winery from Szekszárd will delegate a wine to this masterclass and theirCabernet Franc is presented in another masterclass delivered by András Horkay dipWSET wine expert. Vesztergombi Cabernet Franc is barrel aged for 18 months and is typical of the variety. If you miss the masterclasses, you can still taste wines at Vesztergombi’s booth, do not miss Csaba, a multi award winner blend names after Csaba Vesztergombi, the son of the founder. „The flagship wine of our cellar, a typical Bordeaux blend with more or less equal proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. It is made only in exceptional vintages, and we insist on this principle of ours even if painfully long years pass without having the chance to create the wine. We are keen on constant high quality.”

Frittmann Winery – autochton grapes in abundance

Kunság wine region was placed on the map of educated winelovers by the Frittmann brothers. They resisted the temptation of the local tradition to make fake wines in large quantities, what they did was quality winemaking from the very beginning. The Frittmann’s efforts were rewarding: the winery received several prestigious prizes like Winery of the Year and Winemaker of the Year. Ezerjó is a local grape that they use for both sparkling and still wine, the aromatic varieties are also important like Irsai Olivér or Cserszegi Fűszeres and Generosa is a variety used probably only by them. „Light straw yellow colour. When smelling, the wine glass is full of peach and pear. The alcohol, the acidity and the body gives a light, still round structure. On the palate yellow fruits and refreshing citrus fruits, and all these components result an easy drinking, lively, light hearted wine.”

’Borjour’ is a pun to rhyme with French greeting ’bonjour’ with another meaning: ’bor’ stands for wine in Hungarian, and a ’zsúr’ (pronounced in the same way as the French ’jour’) is a friendly or familiar gathering. This next edition will be more grandiose than ever: more than 220 wineries will occupy 3 buildings of Millenáris Park offering more than 800 wines.
Kurt Taschner started to make bottle fermented sparkling wines well before it became trendy in Hungary. His Chardonnay is super elegant, but he also concentrates on indigenous grape varieties. How much Frühroter Veltliner have you tasted so far? None? Then taste Taschner’s white wine made of this rare variety: it boasts flowers and peach on the nose, tropical fruits and spiciness on the palate. Mango and citrus fruits. Light, juicy wine ideal with turkey dishes.

More than 200 Hungarian wineries on 17 February

Borjour is a team of wine enthusiasts, who organize wine events in a „funky” way – they offer tastings in a river cruise ship, in a roundabout (really!) or in a tunnel deep under the ground. Their largest annual event is called Borjour Magnum – yes, magnum stands for the size of the event, and it offers unlimited tasting of the exhibited wines.

The largest event?

The organizers claim Borjour Magnum to be the biggest indoor wine tasting in Hungary, and take all things into consideration indeed it is: Budapest Wine Festival is larger, but it is an outdoor event in the wonderful World Heritage Castle of Buda, while VinCE Budapest Wine Show is a larger scale indoor event if we add up masterclasses and workshops, but definitely Borjour Magnum is the largest wine tasting where you can sample wines from the largest number of wineries under one roof.

No suits, no ties!

Borjour events are not trade exhibitions, so do not expect serious businessmen with namecards and briefcases. It is a consumer event, thus no suprise if visitors not only sample, but drink as well. You can come across professionals as well, but this relaxed wine tasting is more about celebrating wine and discovering new favourite wineries.

The little estate from Badacsony wine region is a really big „hit” now, even the most critical wine bloggers use only positive superlatives when describe their wines. This Rhine Riesling is just one superb white wine of them, but you must also taste their different variations of Olaszrizling wines.
