Bubbles of the Weekend

The US wine writer of Naked Wines arrived at her 5th piece of the series of Hungarian sparkling wines. Here she introduces Dubicz and Babarczi sparkling wines, which are both aerated (carbon dioxide added) wines. Easy going, juicy, refreshing wines for the long, presumably hot weekend. And since we were there when Elizabeth Smith visited Babarczi Vineyard and Winery in Pannonhalma, we can share a secret: a piece of the wine writer’s heart was stolen by this hairy gentleman called Berni… The above photos are kind of “werk photos” to show the scene behind the article, and indeed, there were hardly any photos taken by Elizabeth without the dog.

So what is Buborczi like?

Excerpt from Elizabeth Smith’s article:
Babarczi Buborczi 2021– whose name is the combination of buborék (bubbles) and Babarczi – is a carbonated blend of Cserszegi Fűszeres, Irsai Olivér, and Tramini. The result is a crisp, mouthwatering and aromatic wine that you will be hard pressed to stop sipping. “It is dominated by Irsai, which is very fragrant and aromatic. Cserszegi is strong in acidity, but also aromatic. Fűszeres means spicy. Tramini gives it body,” shared Babarczi. “Fine bubbles caress the palate, while its fragrant fruit flavors and lively acidity make this wine the refreshing drink of the summer.”

A merry lady from the hills of Pannonhalma

Though her birthday was two days ago, we are still in time to cheer Zsuzsanna Babarczi – in Hungary we say that birthday wishes are still valid 8 days after… This young, cheerful, lovely lady is always like in the photo above: never tired, never grumpy, always patient, even in the last hour of a tiring day at a wine exhibition.
You can meet her and Babarczi wines on 25 August at the 5th Hungarian Gettogether in Pannonhalma. (If you are a wine professional and would like to participate, contact us!)

Babarczi Bubbles

To the great joy of many winelovers, nowadays almost all Hungarian wineries add a sparkling wine to their range, so do the Babarczi family. ‘Buborczi’ is an aerated sparkling wine made of Cserszegi Fűszeres, Irsai Olivér and Tramini – three aromatic grapes. Due to the cooler climate of Pannonhalma wine region the wine is refreshing with vibrant acidity. “This wine is a unique and exciting blend of the spicy aromas of Cserszegi Fűszeres and Irsai Olivér’s perfumed, elderflower notes. Fine bubbles caress the palate, while its fragrant fruit character and lively acidity make this wine the refreshing drink of the summer.” The name Buborczi is a mix of the family name and the word ‘buborék’ meaning bubble.

Aromatic bubbles

It is not hard to find out that the name of the wine comes from the union of two words, ‘buborék’ (‘bubbles’) and Babarczi. The base wine is a blend made of Cserszegi Fűszeres, Irsai Olivér and Tramini varieties. “This wine is a unique exciting blend of the peachy acidity and lightness of Tramini, the spicy aromas of Cserszegi Fűszeres and Irsai Olivér’s perfumed, elderflower notes. Fine bubbles caress the palate, while its fragrant fruit character and lively acidity make this wine the refreshing drink of the summer.”

Its retail price is only around 5 euros!
