A millionaire winemaker – it sounds paradox, doesn’t it? As in the old story, one man asks the winemaker how he gained a million. ’Well, I had two millions, and I lost one quickly’.

Nimród Kovács with his wife, Dorottya, and the former president of the USA, Bill Clinton

Nimród Kovács wasn’t always rich, he worked hard to become a successful businessman, and now, when he could get retired, he works probably even harder to fulfill his dream: to get international ackowledgement of his wines, the wines of Kovács Nimród Winery. A recently published book tells the wholse story of his adventurous life: he left Hungary in 1971 – he escaped from Hungary by swimming from former Jugoslavia beach to Italy! –, then after an Italian refugee camp he travelled to the USA, where he settled down. First he worked as a waiter daytime and studied marketing in the evening at the university, then he got a job in a New York advertising agency, and after that he built a career in the world of cable televisions. He travelled the world, became successful and after the system of the regime he returned Hungary. He was the one who created HBO, the first movie television channel in Hungary.

Paul Newman is founder of The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, and Nimród Kovács is a supporter of the project

At the age of 60 he decided to devote all his time to his winery in Eger wine region, and soon his devotion was rewarded. He believes in local grape varieties, but he believes that the international grape varieties are important tools to communicate with winelovers who do not know Hunagrian gapes yet. „The essence of fine wine is rooted in the unique terroir, where the grapes are raised. We are fortunate enough to have three of the top terroirs in the Eger wine growing region. Since Eger is a cool climate region, similar to Burgundy or cooler climates of California, we planted varieties that feel very much at home, and are capable of producing world class wines. In addition to these international varietals which include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, we also proudly feature traditional Hungarian varietals, such as Furmint and Kékfrankos. We farm these grapes using sustainable practices and every year we hand harvest these healthy and happy grapes which are being gently guided into fine wines.”

The book and Nimród Kovács with the author of the biography, Ágnes László

The book is available only in Hungarian language at the moment, but hopefully soon it will be published in English as well. The author of the book is a well known journalist, Ágnes László, who wrote an easy-to-read, exciting biography of a man with great philosophy. Though the book is not available yet in English, the marvellous wines of Kovács Nimród Winery are available in several countries (USA, UK, China, Germany, Poland). The USA is the second biggest market for KNW wines after Hungary. In the USA and Hungary all KNW wines are available online.

British wine magazine decanter.com published an article with a collection of stories from a book called Mint Juleps with Teddy Roosevelt: The Complete History of Presidential Drinking. The topic is always interesting, but it’s definitely more exciting at the time of fierce verbal figths for the White House.

The author of the book, Mark Will–Weber is a specialist in US presidents, military – and running. What a combination!

As it turns out from Weber’s book, US presidents were more or less keen on quality wine.

Barack Obama is one of the latest, just look at the way he is holding his glass… Kennedy of course loved Champagne, though while Marilyn Monroe, with whom he had an affair drank Piper-Heidsieck, Kennedy’ wife preferred Veuve Clicquot. Nixon, who is mostly known about the Watergate scandal, treated his guests in a tricky way, which is not surprising knowing his ’honest’ character: ’One of Nixon’s favourite wines was the First Growth Château Margaux. Another was Château Lafite Rothschild and particularly the 1957 vintage. However, Will-Weber has noted that ‘Tricky Dick’ was loathe to share his Bordeaux wine: ‘His guests were typically given a decent (but far less expensive) wine — and the waiters were instructed to serve it with a towel wrapped around the bottle so as to hide the label.’

Barack Obama

One of the presidents with the most sophisticated taste was definitely Thomas Jefferson:
‘Jefferson will always be regarded as the First Father of Wine in the United States’, asserted Will-Weber. His diplomatic travels in 1787 to ‘southern France and the Italian Piedmont’ instilled in him a lifelong passion for European fine wine.

‘Jefferson’s favourite wines appear to have been top-quality vintages of Bordeaux, Burgundy and Sauternes’, wrote Will-Weber.

The third president also had high praise for white Hermitage, reportedly naming it ‘the first wine in the the world without single exception’.

Jefferson ordered vast amounts of wine from Hungary. In 1801 he bought 240 bottles to be precise, along with more than 100 gallons of Madeira wine, according to Will-Weber.

Unfortunately, Jefferson’s wine obsession sank him into crippling debts, leaving him ‘on the brink of bankruptcy’ by the time of his death.’

And how about the future?
According to drinksfeed.com ‘A New York vineyard released a wine called “Victory White” to encourage a Hillary Clinton bid for the White House in 2016.’
Her husband, Bill Clinton is known as an educated winelover with subtle taste. He visited Tom George restaurant in Budapest in 2011 and had a great time. As the sommelier reported afterwards, he enjoyed the selection of Hungarian wines matched his plates.
And Donald Trump? He is a big player in wine as well. According to BusinessInsider.com: ‘Of course Donald Trump has a winery named after himself. Trump Winery is located on a 1,300-acre estate Charlottesville and is Virginia’s largest vineyard.

It opened in 2011 and has 50,000 square feet of winemaking facilities, 100,000 gallon tank capacity, and 750 barrel cave producing sparkling, white, and red wines.

His son Eric Trump is the head of the winery.’
