Vella Terra credo:

“At Vella Terra, we value every winegrower committed to producing wine with the lowest possible level of intervention, and we stand against fake natural wine. We are the only natural wine fair in Spain, and one of the very few in Europe, that requires wine analyses from every exhibitor. We travel to visit wineries and follow one of the strictest participation criteria among natural wine fairs. We believe that until there is clear labelling within the wine sector, and as long as fake natural wine can still be easily sold on the market, those of us who organise fairs like this have a responsibility to provide clarity for the end consumer.”

Csetvei – 100% nature

Well, no wonder the strict wine fair has accepted the application of Csetvei Cellar, they make natural wines, unfiltered and unfined, from grapes from organic vineyards. And why have we mentioned fox in the lead? Well, RAW/ka is a line of wines of the estate, a natural wine line and with a fox as a symbol. The word ‘RAW’ obviously refers to the natural character of the wine, while with the ‘-ka’ suffix together it sounds like the Hungarian “róka” word, meaning fox. Csetvei cellar is located in Mór, but they also have a vineyard in Somló. The main focus in Mór is on Ezerjó, the indigenous grape typical of the region, Krisztina Csetvei has even created Ezerjó Day, celebrated every year on 16 May. Csetvei regularly participate in the Autistic Art project, in which labels are designed by autistic young people, and the money from the sales go to a foundation to help young artists with autism.

The first community Ezerjó pack of wines from Mór

Ezerjó Day is on 16 May, but the winemakers prefer to say May is the month of Ezerjó. This refreshing, juicy, lovely wine is indeed the ideal drink on a warm and sunny May day. 6 producers of Mór wine regionput together their Ezerjó wines to prove that this relatively unknown grape variety deserves more attention. You can still order it and enjoy it in May!

“My first impression was that Ezerjó produces simple, refreshing, zesty wines. But, as I explore this Hungarikum, I discover there is much more to it – and that it is capable of producing oak- and amphora-aged whites, as well as sparkling wines. In fact, many ‘good things’.”
Chris Boiling, Canopy (IWC), United Kingdom

List of wines and order here

Did you know?

– Ezerjó means “Thousand Good” – a tale telling name, isn’t it? Ezerjó used to be more popular, 10 years ago there were 4 times more vineyards planted under Ezerjó, now there are only 400 hectares in three wine regions: Mór, Kunság and Neszmély.
– Though it is an indigenous Hungarian grape, there is a little quantity in the neighbouring Austria as well. They use the same, but certainly in German: Tausent Güte.
– Ezerjó is a good parent: it is the parent of several grape varieties: Zengő, Zeusz, Zenit, Generosa.

Though Mór is the first wine region speaking about Ezerjó grape, Kunság, our largest wine wine region also produces a significant amount of this indigenous variety. Frittmann Winery has an iconic Ezerjó wine, which proves that this grape variety has the potential to give great barrel aged, complex white wines. As we wrote earlier, Budapest Airport has organized its very first wine contest. Frittmann Ezerjó Selection 2016 has won gold medal at this competition.

Frittmann Ezerjó Selection, 2018

The fragrance of this lemon colour wine shows notes of honey, butter and vanilla as well as some yellow-fleshed fruits. Aromas are nicely echoing the bouquet, and toasty notes appear along with flavours of apple, pear and mango. These latter ones provide a special creamy character to this wine, though keep its straight and vivid acidity as a primary structural element. Spicy aftertaste lingers on the palate. Recommended with poultry and fish dishes. Serve chilled to 14°C.

Does your wine calendar have one more spare day? Great! Prepare for the upcoming Ezerjó Day to celebrate it on 16 May! The initiative was launched by Krisztina Csetvei winemaker from Mór, the home of Ezerjó variety, and soon several other producers joined: Brigád Mór, Geszler Family Winery, Frittmann Winery, Lincz Cellar, Miklóscsabi Cellar, Paulus Wine House and Petőcz Winery.
More about Krisztina Csetvei, “Miss Ezerjó”

Chefs inspired by Ezerjó

Krisztina Csetvei sent some Ezerjó bottles to young, talented chefs, and all of them greeted the idea – and loved the wine. Csaba Sajben from DP BBQ Budapest for example created a spinach dish with quail eggs and potato baked in buckwheat.

To read his recipe and some others, click here.

Ezerjó – a good parent

Wines made of Ezerjó grape are usually pale in colour with a greenish shade. Slightly aromatic, and the nose might reveal acacia flower, apple, white petal flowers and even some tropical fruits. Ezerjó is high in acidity – this is why it is so refreshing. Due to its clear, fruity palate Ezerjó is perfectly enjoyable by itself but it is ideal to accompany dishes as well. Besides that, Ezerjó is a capable parent: Ezerjó has outstanding qualities, therefore it was used for the breeding of several new varieties, to name just a few: Zengő, Zeusz, Zenit and Generosa.
