New era, new hope – celebrate with new bubbles!

May is the favourite month of many–especially in the Northern Hemisphere–due to its beauty and its abundance in flowers. In the Ancient Rome, people celebrated Maia, the goddess of fertility and the coming of summer. In Hungary today we celebrate the beginning of a new era with a new government, and with the promise that we will never be oppressed again by our own politicians. Bubbles are to celebrate, so let us recommend three novelties from the sparkling scene

Fehérvári Reserve Brut Rosé, Somló

“Leave the barriers behind: our Reserve Brut Rose rosé sparkling wine is a celebration of freedom given by self-confidence.” The embodiment of May: floral, uplifting, charming. This bottle fermented sparkling wine is made of Furmint, Hárslevelű, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and some red wine is added for the colouring. The traditional method sparkling wine ages on the lees for at least 24 months. 7000 bottles are made annually, and last year it won gold medal at Vinagora international competition.
What is the novelty? The winery itself, with centuries of history, but with a new era from only 2019. And another novelty: Fehérvári Reserve Rosé Brut is now available in magnum format. With a retail price (winery webshop) of 6299 HUF / around 18 EUR. The magnum retail price is 17 499 HUF / 50 EUR.

Cseri Blabla aerated sparkling wine, Pannonhalma

Cseri Winery itself is a novelty on Hungarianwines.eu, we are just about to work with this young and ambitious family winery from the must-be-on-the-radar wine region of Pannonhalma. “Blabla” is a funny Hungarian word, it refers to cheerful chatting, usually with not much content. No wonder, the parents were inspired by the discussions of the new generation–and surely these talks contain a lot of “blabla”. But BLA is also the three initials of the three representatives of the younger generation: Barna, Lilla and Aguszta.
Blabla is an aerated sparkling wine made of Pinot Blanc, Rhine Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Traminer. The retail price (winery webshop) is only around 7-8 EUR.

Csetvei Juhfark Petnat, Somló

Krisztina Csetvei simply “cannot do not new things”, creativity is in her DNA. The recent, 3rd edition of their Vinyl & Wine project with her husband includes a bottle (or 6) of Szürkebarát Petnat), and she also made petnat of Zöldveltelini (Grüner Veltliner), the list of petnats continues. The new member is made of Juhfark, the main grape of Somló, since Csetvei Cellar has a vineyard in Somló as well (though the winery itself is located in Mór wine region). What’s more, there is a Chardonnay Petnat, which will soon be available for on Autistic Art webshop to raise money for the Autistic Art Foundation. The petnats are available at the cellar in Mór – well worth a visit!

Fehérvári Wine Estate, Somló

A quite young estate, though based on family traditions and with strong passion towards the volcanic Somló wine region and its authentic varieties. The estate has gained its reputation with the elegant, traditional method white and rosé sparkling wines, they have collected several international and national accolades in the past few years. However, they equally pay attention to the still wines of indigenous grapes. Juhfark, the icon grape of Somló is obvious, but they also cultivate a much less-known grape called Arany Sárfehér as well.

Feind Winery, Balatonfüred–Csopak

The family estate is located right at the “edge” or “corner” of Lake Balaton, in the village of Balatonfőkajár. If you drive from Budapest towards Balaton, the modern estate building with its tempting wine bar is your ideal “first stop”. The winery has a wide range of affordable, lovely wines of both local and international grapes. Feind Chardonnay 2023 has just won gold medal at Berliner Wine Trophy. Berekszél Rhine Riesling is another excellent example of how famous grapes can adapt Balaton terroir. The winery makes superb red wines as well, we can honestly say that Feind Shiraz is the best all around the lake.

Frittmann Winery, Kunság

Frittmann is a family winery founded by two brothers, and currently the second generation is also active in the life of the estate. The largest Hungarian wine region is most known about the easy-to-drink, aromatic white grapes, like Cserszegi Fűszeres, an indigenous grape in Hungary. The winery has just won a gold medal at Berliner Wine Trophy for its Cserszegi Fűszeres 2024 along with Néró Rosé 2024. The winery also makes a bottle fermented sparkling wine of the authentic Ezerjó grape. Red wines are also important, Kadarka is a star and also look for their complex reds like Cabernet Franc Selection from vintage 2020.

Importer of the Month: Wijndruppels

Sometimes life takes unexpectable turns. A talented little girl might help expand the market of some Hungarian wineries in a country where – at the moment – more South African wines are sold. Let us hope that as featherlight the ballerina’s steps are, so smooth will be the entrance of these wines to the Dutch wine market. We have spoken with Ervin Bonecz, who founded Wijndruppels with his wife, Aki.

– How did you end up in the Netherlands?
– Our 12-year-old daughter, Franciska studies ballet dancing, and two years ago she won a contest in Amsterdam. Her prize was a month at the National Ballet Academy of the Netherlands. It was last year, and at the end of her academy training she had a chance to take an entrance exam. There are 10 times more applicants, yet she has gotten admitted! We were discussing how to go on, and with my wife together we agreed on moving to Amsterdam. We also have a son, he is 24 years old and he has also studied in the Netherlands for four years.

– How did you “get infected with wine”?
– Wine has always played an important role in our everyday life. A friend of ours is the former mayor of Szekszárd, the centre of Szekszárd wine region – he introduced us to many wine producers, and we have always been active in the wine life of Hungary.

– Being a winelover does not make one a wine merchant automatically…
– It is true, but when we moved here, we missed Hungarian wines so much! Why would I drink South American wines, which travelled through the world with huge ships to get to my table?

– Do you have any business background?
– Well, I do have marketing experience, since earlier I spent 20 years with marketing of culture, I was also member of the Ministry of Culture. My wife got her degree in music and choir conducting, but instead she spent 15 years at a large Japanese multinational company.

– Did you get any help?
– Yes, the team of the Embassy of Hungary has been very supportive from the beginning. The webshop works, we have already had some orders – everything functions properly. As for the delivery, the shipments are in good hands: we have a contract with the Dutch Post.

– How did you choose your suppliers?
– We were looking for wines that are made of grapes grown only in the Carpathian basin. What would be the point to present another Chardonnay? We aim to introduce wines that are unique and made exclusively in Hungary. Rózsakő, Kéknyelű, Irsai Olivér – only we cultivate these grapes and they are more than worth tasting.

– What is your plan for the marketing of the webshop launch?
– We have already started to post actively on social media, especially on Instagram. Considering the fact that Hungarian wines are not known in the Netherlands and there are grape varieties that are exclusively available in the country, we wanted to use our social media channels not just to promote our wines but to drop some educational content, too. We also plan to hold events, conduct tasting, present wines for wine influencers.

– Is there a headquarters of Wijndruppels?
– No, at the moment there isn’t. However, we have good connection with the Amsterdam Wine Academy, and we plan to hold events in their building.

– I was surprised to see that you offer sushi and wine pairings on your webshop. Meanwhile I have found out the reason: your wife, Aki is Japanese, isn’t she?
– Yes, indeed, she was born in Japan. She had lived in Hungary for 30 years, she speaks perfect Hungarian, just like you and me.

– When it comes to oriental food, usually aromatic wines are mentioned – though oriental is too broad, of course. What are the best matches according to your experiences?
– Well, the bottle fermented brut sparkling from Balaton works really well! Surprising, but a slightly chilled Kadarka is also a perfect partner of sushi.

– Do the Dutch wine drinkers know Hungary?
– Not really, and this opinion is shared by the professionals of the Amsterdam Wine Academy. Hungary is very under-represented in the wine market of The Netherlands. Even though they are open, they mostly drink wines from the well-known wine countries, and the cheap options from the above-mentioned New World countries. They mostly drink white wine, red is also consumed, but less than white. Rosé is not popular – strangely enough, and sweet wines are hardly known.

– So, you have a lot of work ahead. Yet, if things go well, will you widen your selection?
– Certainly, since there are several wine regions missing from our range at the moment. Later we would be glad to present wines from Sopron, and lesser-known Hungarian wine regions, like Mór, Pannonhalma or Zala.

The renewal of a historic estate

The connection between the Fehérvári family and Somló wine region dates back to 1545. Together with the family estate, the knowledge and experience accumulated during generations is passed down from father to son following tradition. Just like the love, gratitude and responsibility we felt for Somló. This deep attachment is felt in our relationship to grapes, wine, and the people of the area.
In the 20th century, the male members of our family had the opportunity to gain a wider knowledge of the world and to introduce the related developments in Hungarian winemaking. This innovative approach has resulted in unbroken, increasingly intensive development over three generations and we will do our utmost to ensure that it continues in the future.
The renewal of the winery has begun in 2019 with a whole new perspective and selected professionals. Our goal is to show that Fehérvári Wine Estate is able to become a key player in Hungarian wine market on a small scale by creating something completely new and unique on the border of innovation and tradition.
The winery has nearly 30 hectares which makes it the 3rd biggest winery of Somló mountain.

Somló – a small jewelry box

Nagy-Somló wine region is like a small jewelry box on the table of Hungarian wine culture. It is beautiful in appearance, carefully crafted, yet its true beauty and uniqueness lies in its contents and details.
The taste of the wines made here is unique. This landscape is the smallest historical wine region in Hungary, halfway between Lake Balaton and Sopron. It is like a link: the essence of the people living in it and the surrounding areas at the same time.
The diversity of the Somló soil, which is formed by an exciting mix of basalt tuff, Pannonian sand, loose loess and brown forest soil, is reflected in the complexity of the wines grown here. Somló wines can offer something new for themselves many times.
Here, as a common heart of many small wineries, they work together to protect, cultivate and develop the area. On this soil, the traditions of bygone ages meet the innovative approach of the new generation of winemaking. And the experience abroad, together with the domestic expertise, conveys the importance of the contacts through well-distinguished, exclusive wines.

The people behind the wines

András Fehérvári, owner – Father, brother and son in a family where community and the preservation of traditions are values and the transfer of knowledge and experience is a family tradition. For whom Somló has always been home. He is also an engineer and a qualified winemaker, who believes that it is worthwhile to innovate only in harmony with nature, building on the authentic characteristics of the area. He believes that preserving and passing on the winemaking values of Somló to posterity is just as important as financial interests.

Ákos Kamocsay, chief winemaker – He is a nationally and internationally known winemaker who has been judging at one of the world’s most prestigious wine competitions for more than a decade and a half. Columnist member of the Hungarian National Wine Expert Committee. In addition, he is a trainer, wine consultant, and, by the way, he lives and dies for Somló. He considers it important to show the wines and sparkling wines of Somló a completely new, light, easy-to-understand face through the products of the Fehérvári Wine Estate.

David Bourdaire, Expert consultant of champagne production – Champagne master, owner and manager of Champagne Bourdaire-Gallois, who supervises and supports the Fehérvári Wine Estate’s sparkling wine production as an external expert.

Attila Tomor, Estate and viticulture manager – For more than two decades, Attila Tomor, estate and viticulture manager, has nurtured, cared for, and supervised the vineyards of the Fehérvár Wine Estate with outstanding expertise and love. His work is an integral part of the small successes we have experienced every day for the past twenty years. His tasks include the creation, maintenance, cultivation and plant protection of new and existing plantations. This includes the maintenance of the machinery park, the management of the viticultural workers, and periodically – during the harvest and bottling season – he also contributes to the performance of winemaking tasks.

Péter Pacher, Sales director – Experienced sales professional who is also a trained winemaker. He is constantly working to make the products of the Fehérvári Wine Estate, and thus also the tastes of Somló, widely known and accessible to wine and sparkling wine fans both domestically and internationally.
