Chardonnay bubbly in three versions

Koch Winery in Hajós–Baja wine region makes traditional method sparkling wine of Chardonnay in three versions: there is a brut one, an extra brut one and an extra brut without disgorging. This last one is undoubtedly a unique drink even for the experienced sparkling wine drinkers. The fine lees give complexity and richness to a sparkling wine, but we get rid of it in order to obtain an attractive, clean and bright drink. And what if we do not remove the fine lees? It is an adventure, try it! But in moderation, since the fine lees can give headache if you are sensitive, but with one-two glasses there is no need to worry.
The grape was picked by hand from the vineyards around the estate building in Borota, Hajós–Baja wine region. Currently the 2023 vintage is available, abundant in citrus notes, mainly grapefruit along with green apple and some hazelnut. Elegant, complex and exciting sparkling wine with elevated acidity.
The retail price is around 28 EUR.

– Forever young? No, the winemakers can stay in the association until they are 40-year-old. They can apply for membership until they are 35.
– How to become a member? New members are first invited, if the invited accepts the invitation, the members vote.
– What do they do? Tasting events, study tours, educational programmes and more.
– Currently there are 47 members (the list of members is not updated).

The “asparagus and Sauv Blanc time” of the year

Our wine educator used to say that Sauvignon Blanc is a variety easy to recognize even for beginners. It is true, and how delicious that revelation is! Though there is a trend to focus on local grapes and rediscover ancient varieties, it is nice to have stunning guest grapes. And guests should be treated well: we give them great soil, plenty of sunshine and loving care. Taste Sauvignon Blanc wines from different wine regions to discover the differences! Dubicz from Mátra wine region, Koch from Hajós–Baja and Frittmann from Kunság. This is the season of dishes made of fresh asparagus – an ideal pair of Sauvignon.

In Hungary there are 957 hectares under Sauvignon Blanc (source: HNT 2023), it is the 14th most planted white variety (out of the 125 white grapes planted in Hungary).

Frittmann Sauvignon Blanc 2023, Kunság

Welcome to the largest wine region in Hungary, Kunság! The Frittmann brothers, true pioneers, revived the region’s reputation with fashionable wines. János Frittmann’s accolade as Winemaker of the Year in 2007 and the estate’s prestigious “Winery of the Year” title in 2015 underscore their commitment to excellence. Though they concentrate on indigenous varieties like Irsai Olivér, Ezerjó, Cserszegi Fűszeres, or Kadarka, others alike, some international grapes are also cultivated. Complete your experience with a stay in their charming guesthouse, where every room beckons with warmth and comfort.
“In keeping with the Kunság wine region, our version showcases its fruity side: the nose is reminiscent of luscious tropical fruits such as passion fruit and lime. On the nose, this lemon-coloured wine is strikingly refreshing, with citrus and herbal notes accompanied by yellow-fleshed fruit. The body is halfway between light and medium, the acids are balanced and the alcohol content is appropriate for the type of wine. On the palate, small bubbles of CO2, citrus aromas and a fine spicy character balance the sweet fruit of musk melon and pineapple. Recommended as an aperitif, with fish, chicken and cheese dishes.”

The Koch Winery has been dealing with viticulture and wine production for generations. It is located in Hajós region, Borota. The modern winery is been managed in 140 ha, it produces 27 types of wine and sells 800.000 bottle in a year. In 2014 the Koch Winery won the Winery of the Year award. It has a wide range of outstanding wines including cserszegi fűszeres, rosé, cabernet sauvignon and kadarka. Vin Art Winery is been created in Nagyharsány to process its grapes suitable in Villány.

The ’happy grape’

Koch Winery has implemented his own vineyard techniques regarding canopy management in Hajós–Baja wine region. The owner and winemaker, Csaba Koch studied biology, he is an oneologist and agricultural engineer, and his main concern is the vine and its wellbeing. The main point of the special grape growing method is that after a srtict pruning and canes tying (sylvoz training system), buds are not hid, the free growing of the vine is not obstacled in any way. The result is a relatively big, airy canopy that grows according to the needs of the plant around the wires. The plant grows as much canopy as it needs for the optimal photosynthesis. A small proportion of the leaves is cut at the end of the summer. The result is high quality and low costs, since the vineyards saves a lot of manual work. The vine plant is happy, because it can absorb and use as much sunshine as possible.

Charming rose wine with flavours of strawberry and blackberry on the palate, which is a result of the constellation of an outstanding variety, the properly used reductive technology and the bravery of the winemaker. The noble Cabernet Sauvignon is very rarely used for rose wine in Kunság wine region and in the whole Great Plain of Hungary – but this Koch rosé justifies the endeavour. Slightly more full bodied than the usual roses, still it is an easy drinking, elegant wine which reveals the knowledge of the winemaker.

The most prestigious title of Hungarian wine life is given out annually at the end of the year. The process of the election begins with the nomination period: influencers, wine writers are asked to name the winemaker of their choice and then members of Hungarian Wine Academy vote for one of the 6 candidates (the canditates are those who receive the most nominations). The 6 candidates this year: Tamás Borbély (Badacsony), Mihály Figula (Balatonfüred), Tamás Günzer (Villány), Csaba Koch (Hajós–Baja) Zsolt Liptai (Pannonhalma), dr. Beáta Nyúlné Pühra (Etyek–Buda). And the winner is Csaba Koch, owner of Koch Winery! Csaba is one of the most ambitious winemaker, and his talent, his creativity and his stamina at work is rewarding indeed: Koch was selected the Winery of the Year in 2014, The Most Beautiful Vineyard in 2017, Best European Winery by CUECO this year, and now on top of them (and dozens of gold medals from national and international contests) he is the Winemaker of the Year in 2019 in Hungary! Congratulations to Csaba Koch and all his team!

Tokaj is the most wellknown wine region of Hungary, Villány, Eger and Szekszárd are famous for their red wines, Somló is the tiny star with its volcanic soil, Balaton wine region is lucky its tourism – however, there are many more relatively unknown wine regions in Hungary. Duna (the river Danube in Hungarian) broader wine region consist of three regions: Kunság, Hajós–Baja and Csongrád, and they account for the 40% of the vineyards of Hungary. This huge broader wine region is the home of several indigenous aromatic grapes, Cserszegi Fűszeres, Irsai Olivér are typical here, altogether with grapes you have never heard of (and neither have we…) Recently a competition was announced to give names to some relatively unknown, resistant grapes. Due to the unexpected large number of entries, the decision has not been made yet.

The most successful winery of the contest is Koch Winery, which has recently celebrated the 25th vintage of the winery. Csaba Koch, the owner of the winery works together with Petar Cindric and Pál Kozma professors, they have been experimenting with 33 resistant grapes, and their aim is to make absolutely chemical free wines. In the past ten years the winery has achieved significant results: 5 gold and 5 silver medals in international wine contests, 53 gold and 19 silver medals in national contests and 98 gold and 13 silver medals in regional contests. Frisch premium wines of Koch Winery are really fresh – they were introduced at the anniversary celebration in June. Frisch “family” includes vineyard selected, high quality Irsai Olivér, Cserszegi Fűszeres, Chardonnay, Merlot and a rosé blend. As we can see above among the results, Frisch Cserszegi Fűszeres has immediately proved its great quality.

There is a tradition in Hungary: diplomats gather every year in a renowned vineyard, ‘imitate’ some picking, numerous photos are being shot, and then leave the vineyard for the sake of the wine tasting and lunch. However the last harvest at Koch Winery was a serious one: the picked fruit has been vinified into a special Chardonnay, which has already been presented and proved to be outstanding!

The limited amount Koch Premium Chardonnay called Together in Wine is not available on the market however it can be tasted at Koch Winery in the hardly known Hajós–Baja wine region. Another reason to visit Csaba Koch, this young and ambitious winemaker, who is not only a winemaker, but a scientist, who loves his grapes and ‘make them happy’. Read more about Csaba Koch and his theory of happy grapes here
And we are pleased to present an article from Diplomacy and Trade magazine about the wine Together in Wine.
