Hilltop Neszmély estate introduced a series of gastro videos during the spring lockdown to please their followers. The chef, Evelin Fazekas cooked mouth watering and quick meals – these recipes were really popular because they helped many housewifes who had to work online, help their school children with online learning and do household duties at the same time. Shrimps & Tagliatelle is one our favourite.

The recipe – quicker than a wink

Towards the end of the festive season most of us are a little fed up with big meals and cooking those big meals. Something light and refreshing can bring some change, so let us share chef Evelin Fazekas’s recipe, which is as quick as she is explaining it.

– Cook the tagliatelle in abundant water (with a pinch of salt). When it is ready, the shrimps are ready, too.

– Put a spoon of oil and a little butter in a frying pan.

– Add the cleaned shrimps, salt and pepper, fry them a little.

– Add a clove of chopped garlic and some chopped coctail tomatoes.

– Add a handful of fresh baby spinach and pour some cream onto it.

– After five minutes add the tagliatelle, cook it together for a minute and you can serve it.

Watch the video (in Hungarian)

Királyleányka – an indigenous majesty

Chef Evely recommeds two wines to go with the meal: Hilltop Chardonnay – the acidity of the wine nicely balances the fatty cream of the pasta –, and Hilltop Királyleányka, which has lovely floral notes matching the flavours of the shrimps.

Királyleányka (literally ‘Little Princess’) is originally from Tranyslvania, the formerly Hungarian western part of Romania. Now it is often referred to as Hungarian indigenous grape variety. It is grown all over Hungary, typically in Mátra, Ászár–Neszmély, Eger, Mór, Pannonhalma, South Balaton and Pécs wine regions. It’s often used in blends, for exapmle in the popular white blend of Eger wine regon, Egri Csillag.

The wine made of Királyleányka has light yellow colour with greenish taint. It is slightly aromatic, delicate. It has a significant, but pleasant acidity. Its fresh acidity makes it a good blending partner for other, softer aromatic varieties. On the nose and palate it is full of fresh fruits and flowers.

Fabulous location

Hilltop Neszmély boasts The Most Beautiful Wine Estate title from 2018, and its beauty has only increased since then. The River Danube and Gerecse mountains surround the estate, which has a breathtaking view. A spacious restaurant with a large terrace, a tempting swimming pool and a wine hotel make the estate an ideal event venue, and the harvest is a great opportunity to get first hand experience.

Make your owm must

The program starts at 9 am with welcome drink and snacks, then the actual grape picking begins. Participants can make and taste their own fresh must. The harvest takes place in one of the most stunning vineyards of Hilltop. After the “hard work” a well deserved lunch arrives with dishes like beef stew made with red wine or crispy dessert with grape cream. At lunch it is a must to try Hilltop Irsai Törköly Pálinka – a spirit made of the marc of Irsai Olivér grape. After lunch guests can try different sport activities and certainly an exclusive wine tasting will also be available – on the top of the hill.
Price: 9900 HUF / person, for children under 16: 5990 HUF, for kids under 5 the program is free.

The restaurant of the winery offers delicious, rich meals mostly from the best recipes of the Hungarian cuisine.
I would not recommend them if I hadn’t tried them myself. But some years ago I had the opportunity to taste white wines of more than one decade and even some older ones with Ákos Kamocsay, chief winemaker of Hilltop Winery. Me and my colleagues were shocked by the freshness and complexity of the wines. Now this rare experience is available for you. Hilltop Wine Museum has been collecting wines from the very first vintage in 1993. Labels got pale and bottles are covered with noble mould, but inside the bottles vivacious, delicious wines are waiting silently for their destiny. From now collectors will have the chance to buy older lots (like 20 bottles, maximum 200 bottles from some vintages). As Ákos Kamocsay claims, these wines show a totally different face, they can give nice surprise. Even for him it is a great pleasure to taste long gone vintages.

Hilltop Winery is within a short drive from Budapest, and soon they will open the renewed wine hotel as well. The greatest attraction will surely be the two rooms created from large barrels! The hotel surrounded by vineyards, featuring a swimming pool and a well equipped wine restaurant is usually fully booked, thus it is advised to book well ahead.

An absolute icon in the southern mediterranean wine region of Villány. Attila Gere created the first cult wine called Kopar (a Bordeaux blend), and soon after another one made of Merlot called Solus. The fact has been proved recently by 88 points given to Heumann Rhine Riesling by Meininger’s Wine Business. „The reason is quite simple. Siklos towards the west has a slightly cooler climate but what in my opinion is the most important fact is that the thinner layer of loess on the lime stone rock, compared to Villány.
Hungarian wineries were not allowed to make sparkling wines for a long time – due to some tax regulations –, but nowadays there is no legal barrier, and thank god more and more wineries make a sparkling wine to add some colour to their portfolio. Barta Winery is famous for its single vineyard dry Furmint wines from Öreg Király vineyard, but seemingly their „side project” is successful as well. Barta Öreg Király Furmint Brut 2010 truly reflects the unique terroir of ’Öreg Király’ (’Old King’ vineyard) and with its elegant bubbles and persistent aftertaste it is suitable for rare moments, important celebrations. The sparkling wine is available only in a special gift box with two other Barta Furmint wines from Öreg Király vineyard, it costs 88 euros (plus delivery).

Have you ever tasted Ezerjó? It is an indigenous Hungarian grape almost exclusively grown in Mór wine region, the second smallest wine region. It is hard to „tame” it because of its relatively high acidity, but in good hands it can give great wines. And even sparkling wines: Krisztina Csetvei made a méthode traditionnelle sparkling wine, of course, of Ezerjó. What’s more, she has released her first artisan beer, again with a touch of Ezerjó wine! EzerYO, the IPA type of craft beer is made by 972 Brewery, flavoured with grapefruit and Csetvei Ezerjó. Available only in very limited quantity, the best is to try it at Csetvei Garden on 16 August along with wines from 15 wineries at the 2nd Hungarian Gettogether. Bus transfer is provided (for less then 5 euros) from Budapest. The event is free for invited wine professionals. If you are interested but not invited yet, write to us! Other exhibiting wineries: Babarczi (Pannonhalma), Borbély (Badacsony), Csányi/ Teleki (Villány), Etyeki Kúria (Etyek), Hilltop (Neszmély), Koch Winery (Hajós–Baja), Sabar (Badacsony), Taschner (Sopron), TR Winery (Tokaj), Tornai Winery (Somló), Tóth Ferenc (Eger), Vesztergombi (Szekszárd), Zsirai Winery (Tokaj). The tasting takes place from 3 pm to 9 pm, and then the afterparty begins. For the afterparty a ticket is to be purchased (5000 HUF), but the band on stage is really worth it! Bori Péterfy has a unique voice and style, the night will be unforgettable!

…and some other wines, too. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences has an annual wine contest. The 2019 edition has been held recently, it was the 10th Academy wine selection, and this year 142 wines entered from 48 wineries. 7 wines were awarded the prestigious title „The Wine of the Academy”. The majority of the gold medal winners came from Tokaj, but great white wines are made in other wine regions of Hungary as well, as it is proved by the prize of the first category: the premium white wine winner is Kamocsay Premium Pinot Gris from Neszmély wine region!

The scholars’ choice

Wine is all around us, and it is especially relevant when speaking about Hungary. Wine is part of our culture, part of our soul. As a natural consequence our important authorities, universities, town councils each has its own wine contest to select the wines of the given institution. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences select the wines for their own events – and these super intelligent people want the best wines for themselves, of course. The president of the jury is a professor as well: Dr Tamás Freund is a world famous brain surgeon, the vice president of the Academy and a wine expert with immense tasting experience.

The winner of the premium white category

„It is a great honour that this year our Pinot Gris has been selected for this title” – said Ákos Kamocsay, chief winemaker of Hilltop Neszmély. „We regularly register wines for this contest, and several times our products have been awarded the title of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences’ wine. The 2017 vintage was just the right one for Pinot Gris. As a result, we have crafted a full, rich, elegant and deep wine. The Pinot Gris shows us a finely polished harmony and an amazing flavour. It is a young, developing wine, yet it already reveals a great character.”

The winner of the premium red category

The red winner is a usual protagonist of the top results of wine contest: Koch Csanád Cuvée 2012 from Villány has won several awards. The winery has its centre in Hajós–Baja wine region, but also has vineyards in Villány. „It has the colour of pomegranate. Regarding the nose the first impression is that of punch and vanilla waking up a series of associations of the taster. Besides them we can smell several fruits like blueberry and blackberry. Then behind them we can discover a kind of ‘propolis’ note resulting from bottle aging. On the palate vanilla is still dominant accompanied by sweet, dark berry fruits and spices. Significant body, relatively high alcohol, integrated tannins, soft acidy form the wonderful composition of this wine.” Koch Winery won another title at this contest (see below), thus Koch is the most successful winery of this wine competition.
