As we reported last year, the British International Wine Challenge is probably the most influential wine competition, which works in a unique way. A medal winner wine is tasted at least three times by three different juries, which means that a wine is evaluated by at least 10 renowned wine experts.

2017 trophie winners

The top results are the trophies, and this year two Hungarian wines have achieved this prestigious award:

Premium Juhfark, Tornai Winery, Somló

Tokaji Aszú 6 puttonyos, Grand Tokaj, 2013

The trophy of a Tokaji Aszú is almost „natural”, but a dry white one, especially the unique grape Juhfark is something that makes us really proud, especially because Tornai Winery wins the trophy for the third time, in three consecutive years.

8 gold medals: Furmint, Tokaji Aszú, Cserszegi Fűszeres

Hungary won eight gold medals, all of them are white wines, and only two dry (both from Tornai, the above mentioned Juhfark and a dry Furmint). 5 winners are Tokaji Aszú wines and there is a sweet wine made of the aromatic Cserszegi Fűszeres. Gold list is here

12 silver medals: Furmint rules!

Among the silver winning wines again 4 of them are Tokaji Aszú wines (made of Furmint or Furmint blend), and the majority (6 wines) is dry Furmint. The two late harvest wines also contain Furmint. It clearly shows the tendency to use Furmint as a kind of flagship wine of Hungary. Furmint proves to be great in blends too, for example in Patricius Late Harvest Katinka, where Furmint is blended with Sárgamuskotály and Zéta.

11 bronze and 15 commended

In the Bronze level we can see one red wine, a Bikavér from Eger and two sparkling wines, while among the Commended medals we can see 2 rosés, 4 sparkling wines and 4 red wines. As for the red grapes, the lesser known Portugieser appears from Gere Attila Winery and the most important grape of Villány, Cabernet Franc represented by Kővilla Selection Cabernet Franc 2012 by Csányi Winery.
