The largest mountainous wine region of Hungary, Mátra can boast another superlative: it is the most youngish region, since most of the winemakers, estate owners are second or third generation winemakers. Or young enthusiasts, who decided to challenge their fortune in Mátra.

The deer of the 21st century

As Borsmenta online wine magazine commented – Bambi remains. Bambi, the deer is a symbol of the mountainous region full of forests. The cute animal figure is close to our heart – no wonder Mátra kept it in the new logo. However, the new logo captures tradition in a modern way with the textures and shades of Mátra in the background. The slogan is also important: “Mountains. Wines. Community.” It reflects the approach to give space to every player of Mátra from the smallest artisan winemaker to the producer of the largest volume.

We, at Hungarianwines.eu could experience the power of Mátra community from first hand: in our August WebWineWriting study tour a destination of ours was Mátra, since Mátra was a sponsor of our wine writing contest. When we asked the winemakers to present their wines for our small group, we expected positive answer from maybe 5 or 6 wineries. Guess how many answered! 20 wineries! What is more, all of them participated, and the whole tasting was amazing. We fell in love with Mátra wines, and I am sure this region will gain much more international recognition in the near future. Soon a community branded wines is arriving – we can’t wait!
