While all Europe watches football, the most recognised rosé world championship, Mondial du Rosé results are out. Hungary won 12 medals, 5 gold and 7 silver medals. Teleki Tradíció 1881 Pinot Noir Brut Rosé Magnum 2018 received the highest points along with Szentpéteri Cabernero 2020.

Cannes, the seaside city of Southern France is the home of the world famous film festival, but there is another important event. Since 2004 the city has been the venue of the annual Mondial du Rosé, an international wine contest of around 1300 rosé wines. In 2019 there were 1366 wines from 31 countries tasted by 67 tasters. 2021 numbers are not published yet

Elegant Pinot from the south? Why not?

One of the top scored rosés is a bottle fermented sparkling wine from the southernmost region of Hungary, Villány. It is made of 100% Pinot Noir even tough Pinot is hard to cultivate, especially in that hot wine region.

Teleki Tradíció 1881 Pinot Noir Brut Rosé 2016 was the debut, the first méthod traditionnelle sparkling wine of Csányi Winery. 2017 vintage was not suitable for an elegant bubbly, thus a year was skipped. The next vintage is 2018, but this time the team wanted to witness the different maturation in normal and magnum bottle. As for the result in magnum, the above mentioned gold medal with the highest score is quite an evidence.

And what is this 1.5 litre beauty like?

“Light and elegant colour of purple and peach. Intense small bubbles indicate a high quality sparkling wine. Nose is complex and broad with peach and cherry as well as forward yeasty aromas showing the long bottle age. On the palate, the ripe, yet fresh underlying acidity is perfectly balanced by the light, delicate body and moderate alcohol. Creamy intense bubbles and enhanced yeastiness as well as persistent finish all support the quality of this sparkling. Ethereal traditional method and layered sparkling wine with harmony and full of flavours.”
