5 star wines at monthly panel tasting

Speaking about Hungary we certainly emphasize our indigenous varieties like Kékfrankos or Kadarka, but we must mention that Hungarian winemakers can cope with their international counterparts in international varieties as well – maybe not constantly, but there are refreshing exceptions. Leading Hungarian print wine magazine’s latest Shiraz panel tasting revealed three 5 star wines, and two of them were Hungarian: Monopole Soul Syrah by Kovács Nimród Winery (Eger) and Villányi Syrah by Vylyan Vineyard and Winery.

International wine contests are of most importance, but so do the regional ones, because these tournaments show the best examples of a region. Since wines against each other are from more or less the same grapes, the same terroir and made according to the same traditions, the level of care counts, the level of preciseness, and maybe something else, creativity, artistic attitude – something that makes difference between sob stuff and a piece of art.

The 49th issue of the contest, 296 entries

Villány, the most well known red wine region of Hungary has its own wine contest every year, and as it is organised professionally and the judges are selected carefully, it is an important guide for both professions and the wine loving public.

The International Wine Challenge (IWC) owned by William Reed Business Media is now in its 34th year. The IWC is accepted as the world’s finest and most meticulously judged wine competition which assesses every wine blind and judges each for its faithfulness to style, region and vintage. Throughout the rigorous judging processes, each medal-winning wine is tasted on three separate occasions by at least 10 different judges and awards include medals (Trophy, Gold, Silver, Bronze) and Commended and Great Value awards. Regular judges ensure the quality of the contest like Sarah Abbott MW, Tim Atkin MW, Dr. Jamie Goode, Charles Metcalfe among others. Over 15 000 wines are entered annually from over 55 countries.

International Wine Challenge takes place in London and has a unique procedure of judging, which can be seen in this short video:

Csaba Koch is an ambitious winemaker with two estates, one in Hajós–Baja wine region and one in Villány. Two premium wines of the latter estate were sent to Bergamo, Italy to participate in the 12th edition of Emozione dal Mondo Merlot e Cabernet insieme.

Both wines – VinArt Cabernet Sauvignon Premium 2012 and VinArt Csanád Cuvée 2012 – won gold medals, and was also awarded the Press Prize.

The winemaker Csaba Koch says that the great results are the consequence of the fabulous terroir, the soil of Diósviszló, and of his unique grape growing philosophy – he leaves more leaves on the vine to enable more photosynthesis, therefore the berries „get more sunshine and so does the wine”. Koch winery was awarded the Best Winery of the Year in 2014.

The award winning wines will be exhibited at Vinitaly, Verona in April, 2017.
