Badacsony tasting in New York Palace, Budapest, 14 April

Lake Balaton is the largest lake of the European continent, and one of the most emblematic photos of the lake shows Badacsony mountain as it mounts above the light blue water surface. However the lake is not only an accessory of the breathtaking scenery: it has a significant role in temperating the vineyards. The volcanic soil of the mountain, the high number of annual sunny hours, the indigenous grapes with the super rare Kéknyelű all make Badacsony an outstanding wine region.

Pre-selected wines to taste

The most important annual tasting of the wine region in the capital is held on 14 April this year, the venue is the usual one: the glamorous New York Palace, an iconic building of Budapest (now an exclusive hotel maintaned by an Italian company, but in the 19th century New York Café was the meeting place of Hungary’s revolting souls, the most talented authors and poets). However, because of the popularity of the event, this year a new hall will host the event called Róma on 400 nm2. Following the tasting of last year an article was published on one of the leading online wine journal with a rather critical point of view. The author blamed the event because he could taste some faulty wines. The article resulted an outrage on the part of the exhibitors, blaming the author claiming him to be unprofessional and generalizing, and claiming that he should have expressed his opinion on the spot and should have asked for another sample in case of faults. Probably it was the reason behind this years concept: all the wines are blind tasted before the event to guarantee that faulty wines cannot appear in New York Palace.

A lovely example of the indigenous Kéknyelű. Flowery nose with clean and fresh appearance. On the palate it is zesty with vivid, crispy acidity. On the palate we can discover the notes we have found on the nose: flowery, fruity. A most enjoyable, elegant wine with perfect balance.

It started with love, passion, Balaton

How did you become a wine professional?

Well, at the end of the 90s I fell in love with wines. I tasted many German, Italian, French and Austrian wines. I was participated in many wine tastings in Germany. Moreover once I was invited as a jury to a German Riesling tasting. I decided to take part in a professional wine seminar in Wien, Austria. Somehow I was convinced I would like to work with wines.

How did you become a specialist of Hungarian wines? Do you have any Hungarian relatives?

As I already had deeper knowledge on wines of the international market I travelled to Hungary for a holiday in the summer of 2004. In Balaton region I was with my acquaintances and they advised me to taste Hungarian wines. First I was a little sceptic, I must say… but after some particularly interesting samples I was very surprised at the quality and the style of the wines. I was wondering about launching a small wine firm and if I start, why not with Hungarian wines? Hungarian wines were at that time really unknown in Germany and in Western Europe so it was quite a big challenge for me. But somehow I have started and now I am a Hungarian wine specialist! Moreover I am very happy married with a Hungarian wife and I have a son (6), who speaks Hungarian already very well! Thanks to my wife and son, Hungarian culture and love of Hungary stays with our family.

Long lasting relationships and quality oriented attitude

Do you remember your first experience of tasting a Hungarian wine?

Yes, I do. My first experience was with Konyári, Garamvári and Takler wines. They were also my first partners. I am very proud of these long lasting relationships and cooperations.

You have a really wide selection with smaller wineries and icon names as well, how do you pick a winery? What was your last discovery?

I am always very curious about new vintages, new wines and new smaller wineries. I think in the last 5-8 years a very significant innovation took place in Hungary. New small startups and new winemakers with international knowledge, experience and brand new ideas appeared on the market. Sometimes it is really difficult to follow the new trends, but I regularly take part in thematic wine tastings in Budapest and I visit the wineries personally. Thanks to my wife I get also information and news from the social media as Facebook, Blogs etc. So I am very up-to-date. Unfortunately almost all information is in Hungarian… So alone it would be a little bit difficult. I am always searching for wines of the best quality and for interesting notes. Of course the price should be also ok, but quality has priority. If I bought cheap wines of low quality, I could not sell them to my customers. We and I as specialists must stand for quality. My last big interesting discovery was in February and this is a Pinot Noir from the Tokaj wine region!

You should know your customers to make them happy

Who are your clients?

Through our online webshop we sell Hungarian wines all over Europe and sometimes wines go also overseas. But of course our main market is in Germany. We have a lot of regular customers. In the last 13 years we tried to maintain their trust and we are always happy to get their order. Of course we are very interested in gaining new customers as well. Thanks to our wine tastings we reach open minded people interested in new styles and new wine countries as Hungary. We have also reseller partners in Germany and Austria such as other wine stores, supermarkets, hotels, smaller wine seminars and other companies. It is very important to know your customers and their tastes moreover to have the overview about your assortment. We would like to make our customers happy with our recommendations.

What are your plans for the future? What will be the next new item in your portfolio?

I could say we are very satisfied and would like to continue our work on the same basics in the near future. Of course, with the same enthusiasm. I am personally dreaming about a small wine bar in Munich but it is only for the remote future. And I eagerly look forward to wines of the new vintage 2017!

The best Hungarian wines according to wine writers

The Circle of Hungarian Wine Writers was founded in 2016, and it has 26 members. Apart from working on making wine media a better phenomenon, the Circle organizes an annual wine competition. The first contest was held in 2016, results can be found here. In the first part of the procedure the members nominated their most memorable wines tasted in 2017. The resulting list was rather elongated, thus members had to vote for wines (they could not vote for their own nominees). At the end of the voting period the list of the 12 outstanding white and 12 red red wines took shape – the so called Super 12 were selected.

18–20 March, Düsseldorf, Germany

Prowein is „The wine exhibition”, the No 1 meeting place for wine trade. The German exhibition is organized in a German way: precisely, thoroughly, perfectly. Plus they always have something new and interesting. This year the so called „wine scouts” will make a buzz: “International sommeliers, renowned wine authors, selected bloggers and bartenders lift the curtain and present their current trend themes.” “Regionality, classics, internationalism, metropolises, origin, country, earth: Wine drinking itself is “in” like never before and the variety of topics, for which our trend scouts at ProWein 2018 stand, is immense.”

Hall 15 – the thousand faces of a small Hungary

Hungary is a small country, but its legendary wine culture and the its revival place it among the top wine countries of the world. If there is something againts its nation, it is the versatility: there is a constant dispute over „what to put on t e flag”. Should it be Furmint, the famous grape of Tokaj which gives amazing dry and sweet wines all over the country? Should it be the young but powerful brand Villányi Franc from or iconic red wine region, Villány? Or maybe Olaszrizling, the most planted white grape, which can be found literally everywhere and can give wines from the fresh summerwine BalatonBor to the matured, oaked ones? Or Bikavér, the red blend, which has a rennessaince in Eger and Szekszárd wine regions? Should it be the group of aromatic wines made of indigenous grapes like Cserszegi Fűszeres or Irsai Olivér? And how about the rosé wines, which are produced in better and better quality by almost all the producers? The question is still hanging in the air above our small country in the middle of Europe. If you want to get to know us, you must taste all – we are sorry, but this is the only solution.

Altogether 22 Hungarian exhibitors await visitors in Düsseldorf, some of them represent several wineries (e. g. Tenkes Kft. represent Villányi Franc), so the versatility of Hungary will be well demonstrated. Some exhibitors we recommend:

Szászi Winery, Badacsony

Endre Szászi has a miraculous organic vineyard on volcanic Szent György mountain, north of Lake Balaton.

Everyone knows that Zeus was the king of the gods, the ruler of Mount Olympos, but how many of you have heard of Zeus, the Hungarian grape variety? If not, no wonder, Zeus is grown only in a small amount (less than 20 hectares) in a tiny country. It is crossing between Ezerjó and Bouvier, introduced by Ferenc Király at the University of Pécs, Hungary in 1951.
Zeus has quite high yields, and it gives a white wine with relatively high acidity – thanks to one of the parents, the Ezerjó. If harvested late, amazing dessert wines can be made of Zeus. The grape is grown mostly in Badacsony wine region, Szeremley Winery made probably the most well known Zeus in 2002, a late harvest, amazing, complex dessert wine. Endre Szászi, an organic producer on Szent György mountain, Badacsony wine region also makes remarkable wines of Zeus.

Golden yellow colour. An obviously great wine made from fully ripened grape. It was harvested manually, fermented spontaneously in stainless steel, then aged in big barrel for 6 months, and it was released after 2 years of bottle ageing. Both high acidity and high alcohol content have been nicely integrated during bottle ageing. The salty mineral tones run parallel with the sweetish flavours of dried fruits. Only 1500 bottles were made and the ex cellar price is only 8–9 euros.

Wine with a view

Szent György mountain is not the Olympos, it does not belong to the highest mountains in Europe with dramatic slopes, but it has volcanic soil, and from Szászi winery you can get an amazing view of Lake Balaton, the largest lake of Europe. The winery has a restaurant as well with great local food – an ideal place to eat if you are on holiday at the lake!

Most of Hungarian wine drinkers consider Szürkebarát a native Hungarian wine, and as wine education made its effect, it arrived as a shock that Szürkebarát is in fact a trendy grape all over the word, Pinor Grigio in Italian and Pinot Gris in French. Even the film star Drew Barrymore chose Pinot Grigio to be the varietal of her brand made in the north of Italy. Szürkebarát – as it is called in Hungary – literarary means ’grey monk’, and it refers to its legend of origin. It used to be among the top 5 grape varieties before the ’90s. By now it has lost some of its popularity, because other international grape varieties, like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc took the floor, but still there are more than 1500 hectars, mostly in Mátra wine regionand around lake Balaton.

Is the legend of monks true?

As the book Wine Grape says, no:
“Legend has it that in 1375 the emperor Charles IV brought Pinot Gris from France to Hungary, where Cistercian monks planted it on the Badacsony hills near Lake Balaton. This early introduction supposedly explains why Pinot Gris in Hungary is called Szürkebarát, meaning ‘grey monk’. In 1568, the theory continues, Pinot Gris was brought back from Hungary to Kientzheim in the French region of Alsace by Lazarus von Schwendi (Graff-Höfgen 2007), a general who took possession of the Hungarian city of Tokay in the reign of Charles-Quint and who owned a castle in Kientzheim, north west of Colmar. This also supposedly explains why Pinot Gris is called Tokay in Alsace, a synonym first cited in 1750 in a manuscript at Domaine Weinbach in Alsace (Krämer 2006). However, there is no historical evidence to document these hypotheses, and it is more likely that Pinot Gris, often used to make sweet wines in Alsace, was intentionally given the name Tokay to benefit from the fame already achieved throughout Europe by the Tokaji wines from Hungary, which were and still are mainly made from Furmint and Hárslevelű, two local varieties that are unrelated to Pinot Gris.” So we do not know whether Pinot Gris spread from Hungary, but nevertheless we like it a lot.

How we make Szürkebarát

Just like all over the world, also in Hungary you will find pinkish and white wines made of the variety. Since the berry has a pink colour, longer maceration can result a pale pink wine. It is worth reducing yield, because it can give full bodied, aromatic, rich wines. The acidity is medium or even lower. It likes volcanic soil and tends to be rich, oily with a nose like perfume. It often has some residual sugar.

He cultivates his vineyards organically and so does he make his wines. His estate is in a spectacular spot offering breathtaking view from the garden of his tiny tasting house and rustic guest houses. Thank God not only he grows grapes, but his estate as well – during the past years a restaurant with a huge terrace – certainly overlooking Balaton, the largest lake of Europe –, and a modern grape processing plant have been completed. This latter makes superb grape seed oil, grape juice, grape seed flour – all of them organic.

This has been the most severe winter of the decade in many countries of Europe, so has it in Hungary with minus degrees Celsius continually. The best solution to survive until the bear comes out of his cave is to escape to a place with healthy hot spas and healthy great wines. Thanks God Hungary has several wineries offering these two attractions in one place. Here is a bunch of them.

Gere Crocus – the proper treatment for mind and body

Villány, the centre of red wine production of Hungary is a small town with not much infrastructure, but if you enter Hotel Crocus, you will find yourself in another world. Every single detail of the wellness hotel is elaborated in a stylish way, the whole interior is subtle and elegant. Indulge yourself in the grape treatments to rejuvenate the body – and then treat your renewned body with the suberb Gere wines at dinner in the hotel’s Mandula restaurant.

Bock – hunters’ shelter

Another highlight of Villány is Hotel Ermitage, the hotel of József Bock, another great winemaker of the wine region. Bock is a passionate hunter – you bet, you will find plenty of delicious game dishes on the menu of his restaurant called Óbor (literally ‘old wine’). Bock is also famous for his grape seed products, the winery even has its grape seed mill to be launched very soon. Hotel Ermitage is a four star, comfortable hotel with a great spa resort – there is even a private spa for couples with romantic illumination.

Zsirai Winery – tiny house in precious Mád

Mád is a village with the most precious vineyards of Tokaj. Zsirai is a young, ambitious winery with fabulous wines – sweet and dry as well –, and they have a small guest house for a maximum of 9 guests. The famous cave spa, Miskolctapolca is only 45 minutes drive from Mád, and with the quiteness of the village Mád the holiday would be a soul renewer one!

Szászi Estate – spectatular view of frozen Balaton from near the fireside
(The website is in Hungarian, but we are happy to help booking.)

Lake Balaton, the largest lake of Europe is wonderful in winter (click on our report on the Grand Sliding). Endre Szászi organic winemaker has two small guest houses with breathtaking view of the lake, built in the authentic architecture style of rural North Balaton. The cosy rooms with fireplace offer undisturbed relax with great Kéknyelű, Olaszrizling, Chardonnay and other wines made by Szászi on the volcanic soil of Szent György hill, and hot spas are within easy reach in every direction (Zenit Hotel and Bonvino Hotel are both 10-15 minutes drive from Szászi).

Thummerer Winery – pleasures from inside the rocks

The family winery of the Thummerers is situated in a cellar carved in the volcanic tufa rock – it has a unique atmosphere and it is ideal for aging wines (Thummerer Bikavér has recently been chosen the Best Wine of the Winewriters) – even the family lived in a cave flat at the beginning of their enterprise. The winery is situated in the small village of Noszvaj near Eger, and the winery also runs a restaurant, Magtár vendéglő (’Cropstore inn’) with home made dishes. Egerszalók is another famous village very close to Noszvaj where a unique salt spa can be found (the other salt spa of this kind of Europe is in Turkey).

An embassy is a little island of a nation in a foreign country. If we are proud of the local wines we drink, then we should send the same good wines to all the Hungarian embassies around the globe. Thanks God the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Trade and Foreign Affairs agrees and – not depending on the ruling government – organizes a wine selection every year.

This year almost 200 samples arrived, the renowned experts had the hard and sweet job to choose the best ones. The main principle was to pick wines that are made of indigenous grapes (from the Carpathian basin) and ones that reflect our country. Of course the judges were keen on choosing wines that are of high quality and ones that are elegant and enjoyable all around the world. Hungarians love high acidity, but maybe our tongue is ‘calibrated’ to higher acidity then all the rest of the world – thus at the tasting this fact was taking into consideration.

The results are to be calculated yet, but since the editor of this site was member of the tasting panel, we can give some insider information.

The sparkling wines showed a great evolution, there were just a few, but all of them méthode traditionelle, beautifully made, and the majority were made of Hungarian grape – namely Furmint. And as the good scores prove: Furmint is an ideal base for sparkling.

Regarding the white wines, we can say that the aged, complex whites are mostly really great, however in the category with the highest number of samples, in the light, easy drinking, fresh white wine category unfortunately still some samples were found faulty. Regarding the red wines, we have experienced much less overoaked and much less high alcohol or jammy wines then in the earlier years. And as for the sweet wines – well, we know that the world consumes less and less sweet wines, they are definitely full of sugar, but that lovely acidity balances the sugar! Marvellous ‘Szamorodni’ wines, suberb late harvest wines and stunning Tokaji Aszú wines – you can expect the best, if you are invited to any event of a Hungarian embassy or cultural institute around the globe.

As it was reported on the 11 October, some winemakers are keen on changing the tradition and introduce a name that sounds unique, and its meaning is adequate regarding the grape variety. Out of more then 50 suggestions three names are still in contest: Oris, Nemes and Mandola.

We have asked some experts to give their opinion on the topic.

Anders Levander

Anders Levander Swedish wine writer, owner of Sweden’s most popular online wine journal DinVinguide lives in Italy, agrees with the change and he cites Italian examples to prove that the decision is right. ‘Think of Prosecco – the grape has been renamed, now it’s Glera, and it avoids confusion since now Prosecco always refers to the origin protected sparkling wine made of Glera, while Glera is also used for still wine. Another good example of renaming involves Hungary – as Levander pointed out –, the grape Tocai Friulano had to be changed as a consequence of EU decision (to protect Hungarian wines from Tokaj), and it took less then two years for the world to get used to Friulano wines from North Italian Friuli wine region. Tokay Pinot Gris in Alsace is the same thing: today there’s no problem naming it Pinot Gris without the prefix.”

     Elizabeth Gabay

Elizabeth Gabay MW is a frequent speaker in Hungary and thus she is specialized in Hungarian grape varieties. ‘Well my first reaction was that it was a waste of time changing names – it would just confuse people even more. But on reflection I think the benefits would outweigh the disadvantages. Right now it is always necessary to explain that the variety is neither Italian or related to Riesling. Tasters who do not know this, search for characters which are not there. Plus the name gives no idea of any Hungarian character.’ And as for the name options, she has her own favourite: ‘I am not too keen on Oris, sounds like some made up hybrid, but like both Nemes and Mandola, so why not both: Nemes Mandola – the noble almond – sounds nice and is easy to say for non-Hungarians.’

                  Endre Szászi

A local winemaker, Endre Szászi, owner of the organic wine estate in Badacsony wine region, North of Lake Balaton disagrees with the renaming: ‘In my opinion if we want to make the world outside the Carpathian basin know about our flagship grape variety, we shouldn’t start it with introducing a totally new name. The market has accepted more complicated names then Olaszrizling, and besides in foreign languages the word Olasz is not associated with Italy (and neither is ‘nemes’ associated with the word ‘noble’. I think we should place the emphasis on the unique character of the wine, present and introduce the wine to wider audience, but first of all Hungary should put emphasis on wine marketing. And we must not forget about reality: 90% of Olaszrizling wines are sold within Hungary, Hungarian speaking regions. We have had this variety for 180 years, we celebrate it as a ‘hungaricum’. Others would cherish it as treasure with such a long history.’
