But they revealed that in vintage, 2025 the Hárslevelű was well ripened, even shrivelled, thus the wine is thicker, full bodied, complex, layered and elegant. Maybe it is worth buying “en primeur”!

The German international wine contest has always been popular among Hungarian winemakers, but this winter edition is the record so far: Hungary ranks 3rd in the medal contest with 178 medals after Italy (337 medals) and Spain (245). Even the organizer Germany has less medals (169). Hungary has collected 8 grand gold, 147 gold and 23 silver medals. Let us introduce some highlights of the award winners.

Teleki Tradíció Malbec 2023, Villány – grand gold

Obviously, Malbec is not a usual variety in Hungary, only a few wineries grow it. Csányi Winery tries to adapt to the climatic changes, and Malbec proves to be a good solution even in Villány, the southernmost wine region of Hungary. The grand gold medal is a huge acknowledgement, and keep in mind that this super premium wine costs only about 24 EUR in retail. “A lush, Mediterranean-style aroma, with notes of sun-dried forest fruits, and piquant oriental spices. Full-bodied, richly textured, harmonious wine, with vitality and appealing fruitiness.” Another accolade: Teleki Kővilla Syrah 2024 received gold medal.

Vesztergombi winery was the most successful winery of the previous edition of Berliner Wine Trophy winter tasting, and probably he is the most successful again (we are still counting). So, Ferenc and Csaba Vesztergombi are “regular winners”, but this is the first time that they win gold medal with a white wine. Szekszárd is more focused on red and rosé wines, thus this acknowledgement has special importance. Királylány, the white wine is the blend of Cserszegi Fűszeres and Királyleányka, and the retail price is around 5000 HUF!
Thummerer Winery, Eger – 4 gold medals

József Lamport head winemaker is the latest Winemaker of the Year, a well-deserved title, as it is proved again at the winter edition of Berliner Wine Trophy. (The founder, Vilmos Thummerer was chosen Winemaker of the Year in 1995.) The winery celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and these medals fit well on the birthday cake. The Bikavér wines and the Chardonnay are obvious, but Rébus may need some explanation. Rébus is a superior wine of the estate from two precious vineyards (Noszvaj Tekenőhát and Szomolya Nagyvölgy). Selected fruit, a blend of Merlot, Syrah és Cabernet Sauvignon, long barrel ageing. The result is a complex, soft textured, full bodied, yet elegant wine with long finish. It is only around 17 EUR in retail! And the winners are:

Panel tasting of international varieties rare in Hungary

Foreign buyers are looking for wines made of indigenous grapes like Furmint, Hárslevelű, Kékfrankos and Kadarka, and they might be shocked to see our attempts to make great wines of some “imported” varieties. But sometimes newcomers find a new home – just think of Cabernet Franc, the protagonist of a whole appellation in Villány. And why should our winemakers restrain themselves from experimenting with other grapes? The world of wine is too broad to restrict ourselves to just a few grapes.

Borsmenta online wine and gastronomical magazine held a panel tasting of wines made of grape varieties that are unusual and red in Hungary. The whole article is available here. The tasters are renowned experts led by Edit Szabó, editor-in-chief of Borsmenta. 17 wines were tasted, we present the two winners below the photo.

The Best White: Heimann Viognier 2023, Szekszárd

Viognier was first planted by late Tibor Gál in Eger, whose son with the same name continues running the estate (he makes three white wines using Viognier). There are 14.45 hectares under Viognier in Hungary, with 13.28 growing in 2025 (source: HNT).
Zoltán Heimann Jr about Viognier:
“The Viognier was planted in the Bati-kereszt vineyard by my parents. Since the region lacks a distinctive white variety, Viognier has become a Heimann specialty. It offers honeyed sweetness with aromas of white flowers and white-fleshed fruits. The 2023 vintage holds a special place in our hearts as it is our first organic Viognier. This is our only white wine.”
Borsmenta description:
” The grape was harvested by hand, soaked on the skin for 2-3 hours, then pressed and fermented in stainless steel tank at low temperature. Half of the wine matured in large, 5 HL cask for 6 months on the fine lees. The result is an elegant white wine with a full body and aromas of autumn fruits, apricots, and basil.”
More about Heimann Family Estate

The Best Red: Vesztergombi Malbec, Szekszárd

For some unknown reason Malbec variety is missing from the statistics of HNT. We have sent a question, as soon as we get answer, we will update this article. For sure there are producers growing the variety both in Villány and Szekszárd wine regions.
Csaba Vesztergombi about Malbec variety:
“In 2015, we planted half a hectare on the fabulous Kerékhegy. We used the first harvest to feed the deer, so unfortunately there was none left for winemaking. In 2018, we managed to preserve the grapes, but it was the harvest that made the vintage special, as my seventh-grade daughter and the entire 7B class did the work.”
Borsmenta description:
“The grapes were harvested in the Kerékhegy vineyard in Szekszárd, at an altitude of 260-290 meters above sea level, where the loess soil is rich in red clay and limestone. This is a Mediterranean-style wine that has been aged for a year in 300- and 500-liter oak barrels. Its aroma is characterized by raspberry and plum fruitiness, complemented by dark chocolate bitterness, cinnamon, clove spiciness, and a hint of smokiness. A soft, rich, and round Malbec that is very easy to enjoy.”

Is this Hungary or Germany?

Someone might ask, looking at the names of the most important wine producers from Szekszárd. Heimann, Takler, Eszterbauer, Sebestyén, Schieber, Bodri, Lajver… To answer this question, we need to delve into history. We know that viticulture in Pannonia dates back to the 3rd–4th centuries AD, when the Romans planted vineyards here. After the fall of the Roman Empire, winemaking traditions were adopted and continued in the Middle Ages by monks and local peasants. From the 11th century, vineyards were mainly managed by monasteries and churches. In 1061, the abbey in Pécsvárad was founded, which played an important role in the development of winemaking in the region. Wine from Szekszárd began to gain a reputation as a high-quality product.

Then the Turks arrived and took over these beautiful lands for 145 years. During their occupation, many vineyards were destroyed, and cultivation survived only in less accessible areas. When the war ended in 1686, Szekszárd was devastated and depopulated. The new rulers – the Habsburgs, although not always sympathetic to Hungarian aspirations for independence – provided the region with political and economic stability that fostered the development of agriculture and crafts. They encouraged the region’s repopulation by bringing settlers from Germany, primarily Swabians – who, after settling in their new homeland, became known as Danubians (Donauschwaben) and possessed knowledge of agriculture and winemaking. Where did they come from? Mainly from southern Germany, Austria, and also from present-day Alsace and Switzerland. They settled in many regions of the Pannonian Basin, with Szekszárd being one of the most important.

What did they contribute to local winemaking? Primarily, they planted new vineyards on hillsides, restoring abandoned and uncultivated vineyards. They introduced a systematic approach to cultivation (organized rows) and soil care, careful and systematic pruning, and began aging wines in oak barrels, which improved their quality.

Gradually, an entire infrastructure was established, with settlers building wine cellars, many of which, carved into the stone hills of Szekszárd, survive to this day. They established winemakers’ communities and guilds, which helped regulate the quality and integrity of production. Without a doubt, the Habsburg era was a period of renaissance for Szekszárd – thanks to post-war reconstruction, the influx of new residents, and investments in quality, the region gained a lasting position as one of the main centers of red wine production in Hungary. The Germans not only rebuilt winemaking here – they redefined it, giving it a shape, quality, and reputation that have endured to this day.

Warm, getting warmer…

The climate is getting warmer year by year, but for us Poles, a summer visit to Hungary still evokes associations with the Mediterranean. The further south we go, the more pronounced these associations become. When we stand in the main square of Szekszárd, we’ll see fig trees, olive trees, and oleanders, as if we were already in nearby Croatia or Italy. At the intersection of these two geographical worlds, a unique climate has developed, further nuanced by the diverse topography.

Moderately warm and moderately dry, with annual sunshine of around 2,050 hours, providing ideal conditions for growing grapes, especially red wines. Szekszárd, along with Villány, is among the warmest wine regions in Hungary. Closed valleys protect it from cold winds and Sleepy frosts. The local climatic conditions are also significantly influenced by the proximity of the Danube, which enhances the effect of solar radiation. The hills are 150–250 m above sea level, with slopes facing south (these vineyards are warmer) or north (cooler). Hot summers and relatively long, warm autumns allow the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. Szekszárd lies on rolling hills, whose soils are a mixture of loess, silt, clay, and sand, often with a high limestone content. This diversity of soils gives the wines complexity, finesse, and elegant structure. In the region’s best vineyards – for example, in Görögszó, Strázsahegy, and Gurovica – red clay is also common, allowing the soil to perfectly manage heat and water. Experienced winemakers know that when the vine roots reach red soil after a few years, the leaves become greener, the plant grows more vigorously, and copes better with drought – this allows for the production of must with a very high extract.

German settlers who developed the devastated region brought with them varieties they knew well from their homeland. The most important of these was Blaufränkisch, known today in Hungary as Kékfrankos. This, arguably the most important red grape variety in Central and Eastern Europe, perfectly reflects the region’s terroir: it produces fruity, spicy, dry wines with a distinct acidity. The cropping structure is decidedly It is the leader, growing on almost 700 hectares. Absolutely all producers cultivate it, treating it as a material for single-varietal wine and/or as a base for bikavér. Bikavér?! But how can that be? After all, bikavér is primarily associated with Eger… But it is. It turns out that the idea for it was born in Szekszárd. The name bikavér (bull’s blood) is attributed to János Garay, who in his poem “Szegszárdi bordal” (Szekszárd Wines) from 1846 described the color of red wines from this region as “bull’s blood.” Only later did winemakers from Eger borrow the idea for this blend, and the rest (i.e., the legend of bull’s blood drunk by the heroic defenders of Eger Castle) is history. Over time, Szekszárdi Bikavér has undergone many changes, and today the region offers two versions of this iconic red wine: Bikavér and Premium Bikavér. According to regulations, in both cases, the wine must mature in wooden barrels for at least one year. After this time, Bikavér can be released on the market, while Premium Bikavér cannot be sold before December 31st of the year following the grape harvest. Both types must be a blend of at least Four grape varieties are used, with Kékfrankos accounting for at least 45% of the wine and Kadarka accounting for at least 5%. Other permitted grape varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. Winemakers are permitted to supplement the blend with various varieties (e.g., Blauburger, Menoire, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Malbec, Sagrantino, Tannat), but combined, they can only account for 10%. What are the organoleptic characteristics of both varieties? Bikavér displays dark garnet and ruby shades in the glass. On the nose, we find ripe black fruit and notes of barrel aging. The wine is characterized by a distinct yet balanced acidity and an elegant, mature palate. Premium Bikavér has a deep garnet color, a complex and multi-layered aroma, and a full body with a strong structure and a wealth of flavors. The wine is not dominated by tannins, it has a velvety texture and elegance. The second largest variety in terms of area planted is Merlot, followed by Zweigelt, and then almost equal areas are occupied by Cabernet Franc (which produces exceptional wines in neighboring Villány) and Cabernet Sauvignon. However, particularly important – both for the region and for Hungary in general – is Kadarka, which – although it is found in Szekszárd only on Approximately 80 hectares – it is considered one of the region’s characteristic varieties and was grown here even before the Donauschwaben arrived. It fits perfectly with the local terroir, and its unique spiciness, elegant acidity, and light tannin structure produce excellent results in both single-varietal wines and blends. The return of Kadarka is one of the region’s successes in recent years. Of course, if someone wants to drink white wine from Szekszárd, they will find it too. Most winemakers produce Olaszrizling, Sauvignon Blanc, Királyleányka, Grüner Vetliner, or Chardonnay, but it is the red wines that truly define the region.

Moreover, some of the best wineries here cherish the memory of their German roots. The Heimanns are a perfect example of the wonderful results that can be achieved by focusing a family around work on a wine estate. They arrived in Szekszárd in 1758. They ran a farm typical of the time – combining viticulture with animal husbandry and agriculture – and this continued until the second half of the 20th century. After the fall of communism, in 1991, Zoltán Heimann senior transformed the farm into a classic winery – one of the first after the fall of communism. Together with his wife Agnes (an economist), they started everything from scratch: they purchased new They acquired plots of land, built cellars, and switched cultivation from quantity to quality. And suddenly, wonderful wines began to emerge! Interestingly, the flagship, the cuvée Barbara, came from Agnes’s hands.

The Heimanns successfully instilled a love of oenology in their son, Zoltán Jr. The ambitious young man was sent to Montpellier and Udine for training, and practiced in Australia, Germany, and Italy. When he returned home, he asked his father: “Dad, what should I do to be successful?” Zoltán Sr. replied: “Son, create the best Kadarka and Kékfrankos in Hungary.”

This is how the Heimann & Fiai project was born, focusing on these two grape varieties, but moving toward ecology, minimal intervention, and spontaneous fermentation. Zoltán junior has already earned the nickname “Kadarka Man,” known not only in Hungary, and is becoming a star overnight. Always smiling, modest, and open, he is a true symbol of this extraordinary region. Be sure to try the classic wines created by Zoltán senior: blends such as Franciscus, Barbár, and Barbarossa are on par with great wines from Bordeaux or Tuscany. And compare them with the joyful, pulsating Kadarkas, Kékfrankos, and Bikavérs from the young Zoli. Both are delightful. In 2023, Zoltán Heimann senior was awarded the title of Winemaker of the Year in Hungary. He is an icon of Szekszárd, actively involved in regional wine associations and building local ties, and is a great community activist.

Also after the Hungarian transformation, another very famous Szekszárd winery was established – Takler Pince. A major player (approximately one million bottles annually), the company is still family-owned, run by Ferenc Takler and his two sons, András and Ferenc Jr. From the very beginning, they focused on quality and elegant style. Of course, they specialize in red wines, especially from varieties such as Kékfrankos, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Next to their vineyard, they built a chic and comfortable guesthouse and the excellent Primarius restaurant, named after one of their most famous wines. The cuisine is a subtle reinterpretation of Hungarian culinary tradition. The menu is seasonal, and each dish features a specific wine from the Takler vineyard. So if you go to Szekszárd this autumn, you’ll be able to try, for example, grilled carp fillet with potatoes, cottage cheese, smoked paprika cream, and fish cracklings (recommended wine: Örökség Kadarka), pork medallions with lemon and sage, served with potato wedges, romaine lettuce, and ajvar (recommended wine: Szenta-hegyi Kékfrankos), or finally, mouflon goulash with dried plums and red wine, served with potato dumplings with bacon and sour cream (and Szenta-hegyi Cabernet Franc). Admit it, are you hungry?

Of course, you must try the exceptional wines, such as Gurovica Kékfrankos or Örökség Bikavér (örökség means heritage, and this word well reflects the respect the Takler brothers have for the Hungarian winemaking tradition).

There are many more examples of family businesses in the industry, including the small but highly regarded 9 Sebestyén Pince, run by Csaba and Csilla Sebestyén, who farm 17 hectares, primarily growing Kékfrankos, Kadarka, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. Their style reflects current trends – these wines tend to be lighter, more delicate, fruity, and don’t require a special setting like beef tenderloin steak.

Winemaking in Szekszárd is flourishing; in addition to long-established producers, new ones are emerging, sensing the region’s potential. A good example is 10 Szeleshát, or Windy Hill. This project was launched in 2001 thanks to the dynamic László Krajcsovszky. He reclaimed a derelict plot of land in the southern part of the region, planting it with vines. Merlot reigns supreme here (especially in the Gubac plot), and in the cellar is winemaker Krisztina Rosta – be sure to meet her if you want to meet someone with a true passion for winemaking, a passion that yields excellent results.

Kékfrankos by Vesztergombi, Tóth Ferenc and Thummerer wineries

The term “blending” in Hungarian is the same word for “marrying”. After all, when we blend two wines, the blended wine will be something even better, just like in a good marriage, when a man and a woman become a functioning, happy “unit” called family. So, when my niece – Hungarian, of course – invited me to her wedding with a Spanish boy, my sister and me decided to give a special wine to her and the wedding guests: a blend of a Hungarian and a Spanish variety.

It was not desecration!

Probably many wine enthusiasts are shocked now and despise us. What? Blending wines from different countries? Desecrating the sacred terroirs and the hard work of the winemakers?

Well, first of all, the blended amount was just a small portion, for a symbolic tasting, guests had the chance to taste the unblended wines themselves, they could see the labels and we explained a little about the wineries to each inquiring guest.

We are not the first to do cross-country blending, there are famous examples, like a “Two Worlds” blend of Napa (USA) Cabernet Sauvignon and Barossa (Australia) Shiraz and another Two Worlds project (though unfinished due to bureaucracy), including Ernest Loosen from Pfalz, Germany, who blended his Pinot Noir with another one from Oregon. Read more here.

The blend worked! We blended Spanish Tempranillo wine (the most planted black grape of Spain) with three Kékfrankos wines (Kékfrankos is the most planted black grape of Hungary). The smooth, fruity, velvety Tempranillo really benefited from the vibrant, lively and definitely more acidic Kékfrankos wines. Kékfrankos elevated Tempranillo, and the blend was a truly enjoyable, elegant red wine.

As I emphasized, guests could taste the wines themselves, without blending, the blended amount was only half a bottle of each wine, and we had some more bottles, thanks to the generosity of the wineries. It was a funny extra to the wedding, but also the introduction of Kékfrankos wines to the Spanish and other non-Hungarian guests.

So once again, Vesztergombi, Tóth Ferenc, Thummerer wineries, thank you for making a happy day even happier, and thank you for adding some “Hungarian spices and excitement” to the Spanish wine.

Vesztergombi Porkolábvölgy Kékfrankos 2019, Szekszárd

The grape came from Porkoláb vineyard and was aged in 300–500 L barrels for 24 months. Only 2000 bottles were made. “An excellent selection of Kékfrankos from Szekszárd. Well structured, intense fruit and barrel spice, elegant acid backbone, integrated tannin structure. Concentrated fruit on the nose and palate. Red and black cherries, sour cherries, strawberries, blueberries and cranberries. A persistent finish with the enticing notes of vanilla, cinnamon, cloves and black pepper.”

Tóth Ferenc Egri Kékfrankos Superior 2018, Eger

The grape was harvested on Síkhegy, one of the most prestigious vineyards of Tóth Ferenc Winery. The wine aged in aged in 5 and 20 hl oak barrels for 2 years. “A deep-coloured wine with intense nose. The aromas are still slow to open but manifold. Blue fruits, cherries and cocoa powder blossom out on the nose. A hint of exciting amaretto character emerges in the mid-palate thanks to oak aging. Firm but ripe tannins. Th long, cherry finish combined with lively acids and a slightly chocolatey finish shows the wine has great potential.”

Kékfrankos Superior Selection 2021, Eger

“A dense and layered red wine, bursting with black berries, silky tannins, and excellent aging potential. A bold, dynamic yet graceful red wine that proudly represents this classic grape variety of the Eger wine region. Its deep ruby colour with violet hues, multi-layered bouquet, and velvety tannin structure immediately reveal its impressive inner depth. The nose is dominated by notes of sour cherry, plum, and blueberry, elegantly wrapped in spicy (cinnamon, clove) and dark chocolate oak aromas. This harmony is echoed on the palate, where the long finish leaves behind a rich aftertaste of cherry and chocolate.”

The Spanish wine: Sabate i Coca Castellroig So Negre 2020, Penedés

The wine is made of 100% Tempranillo in the Catalan Penedés wine region, where the grape has its Catalan name: Ull de Llebre. The grapes came from three different vineyards, fermented in American oak with skin contact and aged for 5 months. “Intense raspberry notes, liquorice, coffee, rosemary and preserved cherries. Fleshy, balanced and elegant, its gentleness is maintained through the long-lasting finish in the mouth.”

Berliner Wine Trophy 2025 Winter Tasting: Best Producer of Hungary

It is summer, so why do we share news about the winter tasting? Because the Best Producer of Hungary title did not arrive in time, the contest organisers did not do the Math properly. Well, Csaba Vesztergombi did, he simply counted his medals, 3 gold and 1 silver, and wrote an email to Berlin to admit his right for the title. Finally, the contest team admitted the mistake and sent him the certificate. So, while we are waiting for the results of the Summer Tasting to be published, let us congratulate to Vesztergombi Cellar in Szekszárd!

Counting at Berliner Wine Trophy

We, at Hungarianwines.eu also encountered several false data at BWT, we wrote to them many times. Now, checking our news back in March, again we can see that the numbers have changed meanwhile. We published a piece on the 17th of March and another on the 31st of March. At that time there were 185 Hungarian medal winners. Now the results page shows 198 medals.
Certainly, we will announce Summer Tasting results, but, as it seems, it might not be final…

Taste Szeleshát wines in London on 9 June!

Szekszárd winemaker Krisztina Rosta was chosen The Most Successful Young Winemaker at VinAgora international wine contest in 2021. She goes on making stunning wines, this Olaszrizling is a great example. Spring in the bottle!
Szeleshát is one of the nearly 70 exhibitors at The Ultimate CEE Wine Fair in London.

Confusing name, enchanting wines

Olaszrizling is the most planted quality white grape in Hungary, a versatile, great grape variety, our only problem is its name. Olasz means Italian, and rizling is Riesling, but it is neither Italian, nor Riesling (though according to some recent researches it might be Italian originally. More likely people used to call it Italian, because in the old days Italian was a synonym of high quality. Sue Tolson Hungary based English wine writer wrote a detailed article about Olaszrizling.

Noble beauty from Szekszárd wine region

“Nemes Rizling” is one of the synonyms of Olaszrizling, and there has been an initiative recently to change the Olaszrizling to Nemes Rizling again. (‘Nemes’ means ‘noble.) The initiative failed, so the variety is still called Olaszrizling.

Szeleshát is a single vineyard, situated in a wind tunnel (hence the name: ‘Szeleshát’, meaning ‘windy ridge), has a submediterranean climate and loess soil that are both very important factor for red wine making. This area was replanted by our family from 2001 till 2017 on 55 hectares. The mostly grown varieties are Kékfrankos, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

“Fresh, vivid wine with a very pleasant floral smell. Nice vibrant acidity keep this fruity wine enjoyable for a long time. The mostly loess soil at Szeleshát vineyard makes this experience unique.”

Tamás Dúzsi Junior (alias ‘Tomi) is hard to catch. For example just in the past 12 months he has been to the USA, to Paris, to Zagreb and to many other places. Tomi will present the wines of his family on Sunday at 6 pm.
