Matthew Horkey and Charine Tan, the constantly travelling bloggers behind Exotic Wine Travel have picked again some exciting wines in Hungary: Géró, a long macerated wine made of Hárslevelű grape by Hummel Winery (Villány), Céh Kereszt, a red wine made of special clones of Kadarka grape by Heimann Winery (Szekszárd) and a bottle fermented sparkling wine made of mainly Furmint grape in Somló, the smallest Hungarian wine region on volcanic soil. Kreinbacher Prestige Brut is a non-vintage sparkling, and as Matthey says enthusiastically it is „fantastic value” with creaminess, fine bubbles, yeasty character and lovely citrus notes. It is aged on the lees for at least 23 months, usually longer to achieve the refined structure. „More then remarkable sparkling wine for those who expect not an occasion, but a ‘prestige experience’” – according to the estate itself, and their statement is proved by several gold medals (for example from Tom Stevenson’s Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championship). Follow Matthew and taste these exciting wines in their homelands! Villány is a lovely town with a row of historic cellars, Szekszárd is the centre of a versatile wine region while Somló is on a volcanic mountain, and Kreinbacher Estate is an ideal place to stay with a bistro and some guest rooms.

Touristic workshop with wines in Madrid

„Hungary, the heart of Europe” is the title of the workshop organized by the Hungarian Tourism Agency for Spanish tour operators, travel agencies in Madrid (Gran Via Hub). Regarding tourists travelling to Hungary, the Spanish are the on top list, however, they seem to stay in the capital only, just a few of them decides to discover the country. On 14 November touristic experts will have a chance to taste the highlights of Hungarian gastronomy, plus they will be pleased with a great selection of wines from dry Furmint through Juhfark from Somló and Bikavér from Eger, and of course Tokaji Aszú will also be presented. Juhfark is an indigenous grape with unique taste, high acidity and a great story: during the era of the Austro–Hungarian Empire, the royal house of the Habsburgs ordered their aristocrats to consume Juhfark wine from Somló regularly, because the wine was believed to influence the gender of the baby, namely to give boy heirs to their families. Is it true? Read our previous article on the topic. As for Juhfark, let us introduce you Kreinbacher Juhfark, one of the wines of the workshop: „Citrus fruits, mineral tones of the Somló terroir and a touch of mint give the wine a cool character in the nose. Round, medium bodied Juhfark with intense fruitiness and refreshing acidity. Ripe fruits, and pear last in the aftertaste, and the salty aroma comes back on the palate, as well.”

A limited number of professionals can still register for the workshop here.

The occasion was a Visiting Chef Series dinner on October 19 with co-chefs Sean Bruck (Husk Restaurant, Charleston) and Dave Beran (Next Restaurant, Chicago).

The prawn was made with Thai coconut essence and house curated spices. The mineral character of the Furmint along with the pear, grapefruit, birch, citrus flavours must have been a great match with the exotic tastes.

Wolfgang Puck was born in Austria and learned to cook from his mother, and later he studied in France. He moved to the USA at the age of 24, and soon he became successful with his first book and his first restaurant called Spago. Spago in Beverly Hills was soon listed among the world’s top restaurants. Now he is owner of more then 20 fine dining restaurants, catering company and other food related companies. He appeared in several TV shows and in a TV commercial advertising California (along with famous people such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jack Nicholson) as well.

The meeting of the Hungarian Furmint and the world famous chef could happen to due the cooperation of FurmintUSA and its US merchant, Swirl Wine Brokers.

A brave martyr girl – let’s remember her!

Hungary is famous for its beautiful girls. Well, it is definitely true! And our young ladies are not only charming and attractive, but also brave. The story of Magita, a young girl is a good example of it.

Turkish troops invaded Hungary in 1526 and they stayed for quite a long time, for 150 years! The invaders were expelled in 1699. Of course the invasion had positive effects as well, just look at the wonderful Turkish spas all around the country. Our language also preserves some words resembling the Turkish language (’alma’ meaning apple, ’balta’ meaning axe, ’lila’ meaning purple are just some examples of the same word with the same meaning and pronunciation).

However the Turks were not only peaceful spa builders, but they are rather remembered in our history as fierce, cruel conquerors. A legendary young girl from Tokaj wine region was a victim to this harsh era of our history:

According to the stories, Magita’s house in the village of Erdőbénye (in Tokaj region) was a shelter where – risking her life – she hid Hungarian refugees. The Turkish nobilities, Don and Onok fell in love with Magita, who – using their blind love – invited them and locked them in the cellar.

The angry Turkish troops took a cruel revenge

spurned the locals and burnt the village down. Magita was buried alive as a punishment. However she had another Turkish admirerer, the old Suta, who dag the grave above a cellar so that Magita survived digging herself downwards. Unfortunately the two fooled nobilities returned, and when noticing the escape of Magita, they began to pursue her. Poor Magita drowned in the lake near the village, and since the two Turks chased her adamantly, they were drowned as well. After they learnt about the death of the two, the desperate Turkish troops left Erdőbénye forever.

Béres Vineyard and Winery dedicates one of their best sweet wine to this legendary young lady. Magita is a late harvest wine made of three typical grapes of the region: Hárslevelű, Furmint and Sárgamuskotály. The winery has a spectacular tasting room worth a visit especially in the autumn, when the view from the huge window of the tasting room has thousand colours.

The village has a hotel of the same name, Magita, also commemorating the young girl whose memory still lives with us.

Painting: ‘Women of Eger’ painted by Bertalan Székely (Eger is a town famous for its castle, where the brave locals defeated the Turks. Women had an immense share of the victory: they are said to have poured hot liquid onto the Turkish soldiers.)

The capital of China is the home of the 1st BRWC, Belt & Road Wine and Spirit Competition. Belt & Road refers to the ancient Chinese Silk Road, which connected nations and was a major trade route. Belt also refers to Fangshan wine region, where there is a belt of young, ambitious wineries. Nowadays Asia is the land of dynamic changes regarding wines and spirits, and this event – a conference and a wine competition – aims to connect the Silk Road states. India, Izrael, Japan, South Korea, Lebanon, Gergia, Armenia are all represented and of course the main focus is on Chinese wines.

This huge country is the biggest comsumer of red wines, and the consumers are more and more conscious. The era when any wine from Bordeaux could be sold for any price is over. Now the online wine merchants have proved that fine wines should not be extraordinary expensive, thus retailers had to adust to this new, transparent system. Thanks to Internet, Chinese people cannot be fooled any more. And it seems that the era of buying wines only as gift is also over, young Chinese often drink wine regularly, because they like it, and because they consider it healthier then for example the local spirit called baiju. Now they are open for new wines from new wine regions. French is still the number 1 imported wine and probably it will remain for a long time, but other nations will soon have more chance to show their talent.

BRWC is accompanied by an exhibition, where Hungarian wines are displayed as well due to an importing company called Morgan Star Group. Three wine regions are represented: Tokaj, Villány and Eger. Hétszőlő from Tokaj is highly
recommended as well as Vylyan from Villány and Gróf Buttler from Eger.

The wine exhibition is on 10–12 October, so if you happen to stay in Beijing, do not miss BRWC and the Hungarian pavilion!
