Hungary has not developed a Beaujolais-like new vintage festivity, but there is something similar, called St Martin weekend with plenty of goose dishes. Covid 19 has cancelled all the St Martin feasts, but we can still have fun at home, so our Goose News are Good News – we will provide you with bits of information, recipes and certainly wine recommendations – to somehow comfort you in these dark weeks.

2020 Tóth Ferenc Rosé

If you happen to be stuck in Hungary, it is a must to order wines from Tóth Ferenc Winery. The estate is situated in Eger wine region, their Bikavér wines are amazing, but also they have accumulated several international and national accolades for their white wines, too, for example for the juicy, super delicious, super elegant Egri Leányka Superior.

The first rosé of the winery is made of Kékfrankos – as usually. Kékfrankos is an ideal grape variety for producing rosé (see more in our Grape Dictionary). For this wine grape was harvested by hand on the 25th September in Cigléd vineyard. The free run juice was fermented for 14 days, and after a short ageing in stainless steel tank the wine was bottled on the 3rd November. The wine reveals the typical varietal character: strawberry and raspberry on the nose, refreshing acidy and amazingly zesty fruity taste. A little residual carbon dioxide elevates freshness to another level.

Now or never

If you order from Tóth Ferenc Winery webshop, you will get a free bottle of this new vintage rosé wine (until 30th November, over 15.000 HUF purchase). The wine is made in limited quantity, and anyway, new wine is meant to be consumed as new wine, so let’s taste it now.

Order it now (within Hungary)

For the future

Tóth Ferenc Winery is a family winery worth watching. Considerable results from year to year, perfect “hardware” (amazing vineyards in Eger) and “software” (devoted team led by Katalin Tóth, the founder’s daughter).

Katalin Tóth of Tóth Ferenc Winery in Eger has long been practicing the „alchemy” of pairing chocolate and wine, and she has a relatively easy job to do so: partially because the winery has a wide range of wines from the fresh, crispy whites to the aged, full bodied red wines, and on the other hand because she has two friends to help her create the sweet delicacies. Viktória Szeleczky-Takács is a chocolate maker at Fabric Chocolate family chocolate business and Adél Bernáth-Ulcz blogger (CsokiLaBor), the creative mind behind the pairing. Bikavérmousse is a brand new creation of the trio: chocolate ganache is made with butter and cream (without eggs), and then it is flavoured with Tóth Ferenc Egri Bikavér Superior 2017, and served on sponge cake made of cocoa bean flour. Egri Bikavér is the famous red blend of Eger (also known as Bull’s Blood, though nowadays it is rarely translated because the English term refers to low quality, mass produced style of the wine before the 1990s), and at Tóth Ferenc Winery the 2017 blend is made of Kékfrankos, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Kadarka, Pinot Noir and Merlot. „Intense, rich and same taste on the palate as on the nose. The great acidity gives the real Eger character to the wine however the velvety tannins makes the wine pleasantly warm. Fruity taste complemented by slight bitterness of wild plum. A well structured wine with great potential and the promise of a long life.”
Taste Bikavérmousse and Egri Bikavér Superior together (with several other pairings) in Eger (24 January) or in Budapest (14 February).

Katalin Tóth, manager and co-owner of Tóth Ferenc Winery was surprised to taste the typical notes of Leányka grape variety (’Leányka’ means ’Little girl’) in a 50-year-old bottle! Leányka is a white grape, delicate and slightly aromatic, usually freshly consumed wines are made of it. Tóth Ferenc Winery managed to create complex, layered, exciting Leányka (Leányka Superior 2016, Mundus Vini, gold medal), but most cellars use Leányka for their Egri Csillag white blend. „We have opened a bottle of 1969 and 1976 vintage Egri Leányka, and we were surprised to realize that these were sweet wines. But the most astonishing was that the same notes of a young Leányka were discovered in these old wines. Late harvest character, honey, raisin, mango – both wines are enjoyable and real rarities. The tasting of these wines initiated a thought that Leányka may have much longer ageing potential in our cellars than we had expected” – says Katalin Tóth. The 1969 wine is an ideal Christmas present, especially for youngish, 50 year old ladies… 1969 vintage costs 35.000 HUF (106 euros) and 1976 vintage costs 30.000 HUF (91 euros), plus shipment. Tóth Ferenc Winery webshop is worth taking a look at, especially now, before Christmas. Special offers, wine pairings with outstanding quality artisan chocolate, limited edition wines and many wines in the new Eger community bottle.
