Jeep-trip at Tűzkő Estate

The experiences that give some insider information are the best. We want to leave the beaten track and learn secrets, to feel the magic of the vineyards. Tűzkő Estate now offers Jeep tours for small groups, which are ideal for those who seek for adventures and insider stories.

What happens during the Jeep tour? Participants will have the chance to discover the stunning “Völgység” region (literally “Valley-land”). Tűzkő team shows the estate “as we see it”, guests can visit the 300-year-old cellar and get some idea about how the winery works.

Food: a cold platter is include with home-made sausages, cheeses and vegetables.

How to get there: It takes less than 2 hours from Budapest to get to Tűzkő Estate by car via M6 motorway. By public transport travellers should take an InterCity train to the town of Sárbogárd, and then take a local train to Bátaszék and a bus to Bátaapáti.
Extra tip: it is worth visiting the cooperage in the village of Palotabozsok, the sister company of Tűzkő Estate.

Noble owners, youthful momentum

The history of the estate goes back to 1799 and connected to the noble Hungarian Apponyi family. The modern history does not lack aristocrats either: now Tűzkő belongs to two Italian “marchese”, Jacopo Mazzei and Piero Antinori. The innovative Italian gentlemen brought fresh ideas to the estate and the innovation continues. The 300 old cellar and the wine processing plant has been renovated, the machinery represents the most modern equipment made in Italy, and the vineyards have also been renewed lately. As Dr Árpád Erdélyi explained in a recent interview, between 2011 and 2016 under his management 120 hectares of vineyards were planted to adapt the international trends. The estate harvests altogether from 180 hectares mainly white varieties: Szürkebarát / Pinot Grigio, Tramini, Zöldveltelini / Grüner Veltliner, Chardonnay, Rhine Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc. As for the black varieties, Kékfrankos is grown on 30 hectares and there is a little Cabernet Franc and Merlot for the flagship red wine called Tűzkő Domb.

Patricius Winery offers an unforgettable picnic any time of the week, any time of the summer. We tried it once with our study tour guests, and we can guarantee that this picnic is the best – and most delicious way – to discover a vineyard.

Várhegy vineyard in Bodrogkisfalud has been considered one of the most precious vineyards of Tokaj wine region for centuries. One of the most sought after “cru” has several stories and many noble families are related to it. The vineyard tour begins at the picturesque terrace of Patricius Winery, where guests receive their picnic baskets full of products from local producers (strawberry jam artisan cheeses from Zemplén, smoked ham, home-made sausage, avocado cream, salami, spicy cottage cheese spread, cracklings spread, local bread and croissant). Certainly, other Patricius wines are also provided according to the guests’ wishes.

The guided tour continues with the collection of rare grape varieties and then the participants walk up the historic Várhegy vineyard. From here we can enjoy stunning view of the surrounding vineyards, the river Bodrog – the whole breath-taking landscape which is under UNESCO World Heritage protection. Part of the tour is to introduce the different types of soils and volcanic rocks, which result distinct notes in the wines. Guests consume the delicacies of the picnic basket on the terrace of the little vineyard shed, accompanied by well chilled Patricius sparkling wine.
