“Instant theatre” in Pannonhalma wine region

Celebrate Women’s Day with the most proper way: with the beauty, the thoughts and works of women. On 8 March the small town of Győrújbarát (near Győr, about 2 hours’ drive from Budapest) will host a wine dinner combined with a casual performance of three great Hungarian actresses. Wines come from Babarczi Vineyard and Winery, while the dishes are provided by Izsóp restaurant and the actresses will perform pieces from a book written by a woman, Éva Janikovszky. The event is ideal for ex-pat winelovers, who are learning Hungarian – actresses are easier to understand, thus it is a great way to practice.

Cover photo: Felföldi Fotó

Do women get better with age? In connection with wine and men we keep saying so, but what about the women when they pass the 40th birthday? This question is in focus of this relaxed theatre program, where Mónika Tollár art director and art producer will talk with Patrícia Kovács and Zsófia Szamosi actresses – and the audience will also be involved.

Jardinette is a must visit restaurant on Sas hill, in Buda – the capital of Hungary is divided into Buda and Pest, Pest is flat and modern, while Buda is hilly and full of ancient buildings. The predecessor of Jardinette was a restaurant for 100 years, and the new founder bought it in 2001. Jardinette, the name is French – in honour of French cuisine –, however the kitchen of Jardinette is truly Hungarian. Jardinette – as the name suggests – has a lovely garden with old trees and a winter garden which makes the place enjoyable all year long. The family run place is the home of frequent wine dinners, the next one is on the 31 January with 2 wineries, 5 courses and 10 wines. Kovács and Daughter winery from Mátra wine region is represented by Zita Kovács, while Csetvei Cellar from Mór region is represented by the founder, Krisztina Csetvei. Csetvei Cellar is famous for its white wines, but they also have a red wine made of Pinot Noir. It is the second red wine made by Krisztina, she is proud of it, so is her husband, Frici – after whom the wine is called Frici Noir. A lightsome, elegant wine full of red berry fruits, which will be perfect for Jardinette’s hazelnut mousse with salted caramel crisp and redcurrant jam.

Veritas Winebar, Budapest downtown

Budapest has become the city of bars, which is blessing and curse at the same time – depending on the audience. Flights are packed with young people longing for an endless party nights, and the mushrooming bars serve all, the party goes on and on. However, in this jungle of bars wine connoisseurs can find their quality places as well (just click on our Wine Bars section). And now this palette of wine bars has a new pearl called Veritas Winebar.

Opening a wine bar – a logical step

Veritas (originally In Vino Veritas, the latin proverb meaning ’In Wine There is Truth’) is one of the largest and most important wine merchant of Hungary. They are quite strong at the gastronomy sector, and there international selection is getting better and better (one of their latest brand is the French Chapoutier). Besides a huge store in an outskirt of Budapest, their downtown shop attracted hundreds of visitors every week – so why not open a place downtown where people can taste as well? The new, two storeyed wine bar is just next to the store – an ideal place and easy to reach with No 4 or No 6 tram, the two main trams operating on the „Körút”, the Grand Avenue of Budapest.

Eclectic and humorous

The interior was designed by Viktor Csap, and the resulting space is full of witty ideas: elegant, but relaxed, classic, but funny, industrial and unique. The place has a capturing atmosphere, it’s good to be there – and even better to stay and order something. The selection is huge: 360 different labels, and 60 of them can be ordered by the glass (this selection is changing regularly). You can take an open bottle with you if you want. The wine bar has a kitchen as well, Attila Jakab and Dániel Tőkés chefs focus on regional products and local taste with classic dishes like duck liver, wiener snitzel, mangalitza ham. Vegan and vegetarian dishes are available.
