From Cserszegi Fűszeres to Egri Bikavér

The popular US online wine publication has a section presenting wine regions / countries. Until now 14 Region Guides have been uploaded, among others Argentina, Bordeaux, Sicily and now Hungary is also represented with a comprehensive guide. The guide is sponsored by the official Hungarian wine marketing body (Hungarian Wine Marketing Agency), and we must admit that it was a great decision. So far almost 6000 people has seen the introductory video by Madeline Puckette, co-founder of Wine Folly.

From Cserszegi Fűszeres to Egri Bikavér and beyond

The 9-minute video begins with the history and wine regions of Hungary, then Madeline Puckette introduces some important wine styles. She starts with the aromatic white grape called Cerszegi Fűszeres, which is a good idea, since Hungary is not only about the luscious and luxurious Tokaj sweet wines, we also produce easy going, freshly consumed wines. Then she goes on presenting Juhfark from Somló, Cabernet Franc from Villány, Egri Bikavér “Bull’s Blood” from Eger, Dry Furmint from Tokaj and Tokaji Aszú also from Tokaj.

Comprehensive guide with 378 wines from 125 wineries

Apart from some brief introduction to the soils and the winemaking history of Hungary, we can find some practical travel tips, and a list of Wineries with 125 estates across the country. The Wines section consists of 378 detailed wine description, and begins with a brief introduction to some important varieties, including the pronunciation. Now you can practice how to say Kékfrankos: “cake-frank-osh”.
You can search the wines filtered by the grape varieties, therefore, staying with our example in the cover photo, you can see a red blend, a Bikavér. Well, it may not be so obvious to everyone, but Madeile Puckette explains that Bikavér is a red blend, so if you click on Red Blends, you will find Gál Tibor Egri Bikavér Superior among the red blends, with plenty of information. The precise proportion of the varieties, the vinification method, the wine description, and also technical data and food pairing.
