The Quirky Cork about Tornai Winery

“It might be Hungary’s smallest wine district, but lack of hectares does not diminish its impact“ – writes Andrea Lemieux wine writer, one of the winners of the 4th Hungarian WebWineWriting contest. And the wine region she is so enthusiastic about is Somló, indeed the smallest wine region of the 22 in Hungary, with volcanic soil and indigenous varieties. Tornai Winery was a sponsor of the wine writing contest, we were happy to see many great articles in their category about volcanic wine regions around the globe (see the three finalists here).

Andrea Lemieux and the other winners could participate in a 4 day Hungarian study tour, of which Tornai Winery was a main feature. We had a wonderful tour, breathtaking view from the top of Somló, a gorgeous lunch at Tornai’s restaurant and an impressive tasting. The cover photo is taken by Andrea and it stars a “teenager” Juhfark – one from 2011. Stunning concentration, surprising freshness – yes, Juhfark with its high acidity keeps wines alive forever (almost) – and pampering richness. And what about this horizontal gravity in the title? Is it a thing? Yes, Andrea will explain…
