The best Hungarian wines according to wine writers

The Circle of Hungarian Wine Writers was founded in 2016, and it has 26 members. Apart from working on making wine media a better phenomenon, the Circle organizes an annual wine competition. The first contest was held in 2016, results can be found here. In the first part of the procedure the members nominated their most memorable wines tasted in 2017. The resulting list was rather elongated, thus members had to vote for wines (they could not vote for their own nominees). At the end of the voting period the list of the 12 outstanding white and 12 red red wines took shape – the so called Super 12 were selected.

Running around Badacsony – charity run

12 kilometres around „the late” volcano

Do you happen to stay in Hungary, what’s more you are looking for a program for tomorrow? Participate in the charity run organized by Laposa Wine Estate. The 12 kilometre run can be completed alone or in a team. The money from the nominations go to a local folk dance group and two associations that help disabled youngsters. Last year, in the first Laposa run the money went to help a local kindergarten and an orphanage. The run starts at 10 am in front of Hableány restaurant, and goes around Badacsony mountains. Singular nomination on the spot: 6000 HUF (20 euros). We suggest to arrive earlier to find a parking place and to arrange nomination.

Afterparty with breathtaking view

If you completed the run you deserve it, if you did not, you might get the feeling and try it next year – one thing is sure: you will fall in love with Balaton at frissTerasz (literally „Fresh Terrace”) on Badacsony mountain on Kisfaludy road, probably the most spectacular road that runs up the top of the mountain. Enjoy the fresh Laposa wines and the amazing view, relax and have fun!

The day after – Szászi and Sabar

After the afterparty you must not drive, you’d better stay at lake Balaton. Szászi Winery is a wonderful organic winery on the neighbouring volcanic mountain, Szent György mountain. The winery has a restaurant with delicious dishes made of local ingredients, and the view is again unforgettable. Try their indigenous, flowery, unique Kéknyelű! Vulcanus, Rózsakő, Zeusz – more indigenous grapes from which Szászi makes the exemplary wines.

Sabar is a smaller hill among the volcanic witness mountains of Balaton Upland – as they say: a little hill with great experiences. The winery makes clean, great single vineyard wines of Olaszrizling and Rhine Riesling and they also have a Kéknyelű and a Kékfrankos rosé. The cellar is a place of quitness, wonderful to relax. The cellar is open every day, except for Sunday, however on Sunday you can find Sabar wines in the local market called Liliomkert (Lily garden). The market is heaven for bargain seekers with antique furniture, local cheese, ham, fruit, vegetables, wines and many other things.

Celebrate Pinot Noir today!

Like every other „wine day”, Pinot Noir Day also originates in the United States. We wrote about the International Rosé Day and why it has been probably created, and we could also find out how Cabernet Franc Day was announced in the USA. Pinot Noir day might have something to do with the road movie called Sideways. The movie itself was a mediocre comedy about two men who travelled through California, and one of them often expressed his despise about Merlot and his love of Pinot Noir. Strangely enough the American vineyard owners reacted to the movie and many Merlot vineyards were replanted with Pinot Noir.

Pinot Noir in Hungary

In Hungary cooler climate wine regions are famous for Pinot Noir, one of these regions is Eger, which is often mentioned along with Burgundy. Kovács Nimród Winery is keen on having internationally respected, great quality wines, and their success is proved from time to time. Their latest great result is from Concours Mondial de Bruxelles for their 777 Pinot Noir 2013. Elegant, subtle, unforgatteble Pinot Noir!

The north of lake Balaton is known for white wines, though historically red wines were equally famous. More and more wineries grow red varieties as well, Mihály Liszkay with the magnificent estate building (which operates as a hotel as well) makes a lovely, velvety, refined Pinot Noir every year.

Endre Szászi also on the north of Balaton, on Szent György mountain grows his grapes organically, and Pinot Noir is a variety he cherishes a lot. A rosé wine is made of Pinot Noir grown on ’Rókaluki’ vineyard (’Foxhole’) has a rich nose of wild raspberry and cranberries, ont he palate the fruitiness is backed by refreshing, crispy acidity.

Etyek, „the vineyard of Budapest” is also an ideal climate region for Pinot Noir. Haraszthy Winery makes a 100% Pinot Noir rosé, and is also vinified to give red wine. „Cherry color. Primal fruitiness on nose, accompanied by some roasted scent. On the palate besides the sour cherry you will find the presence of chocolate, tobacco and bold notes produced by barrel ageing. Aftertaste is medium-long, spicy.
