3 vintages of Heumann Villányi Franc on the top

There must be some “holy” in that vineyard in Siklós (commune of Vokány, near Siklós, in Villány wine region). It is called Trinitás, meaning The Holy Trinity, and Heumann Winery picks the grapes here for its varietal Cabernet Franc called Villányi Franc in Villány. We collected some of the acknowledgments of the recent and the two earlier vintages.

La Trinità Villányi Franc 2018
Sebestyén Nagy: 9.3 points / 10

The recent vintage has not been released long time ago, hence the glorious march of this vintage has just begun. Sebestyén Nagy renowned Hungarian wine writer gave the 8th spot to this wine on his list of 100 top wines. It is not easy to translate his unique wine reviews, but let me give a try. “Great Heumann wines are always characterised by some lighthearted and irresistible fruitiness besides the dignified structure. The latest vintage Villanyi Franc is like that as well: the nose begins with serious barrel notes, leather and smoke, as if a naive wine snob from the city encountered a rural *”pig killing”of Baranya county. Fortunately after the first shock the rural landscape is enhanced by the endless Troop of Blackberries with their soft bayonet. Tannins are also big, but easy to drink, they slip, they crawl, they remain – there is no sign of any old school rasping tannins. Decent acidity and the barrel spices burp confidently at the end of the gulp. Before we would collapse under the excess greatness of the wine, the black berry fruits come again and take the fall. A dense, majesticFranc with loads of fruits and huge potential.”

La Trinità Villányi Franc 2017
Adrian van Velsen, VWine.ch, 93 points / 100

The Swiss independent wine writer participated in the latest edition of Franc & Franc conference in Villány in November 2022. “Loess limestone soil, 10-year-old vines, harvested on September 28th. Lower yields. 25 HL per hectare. Destemming, alcoholic fermentation in steel tanks, expanded in Hungarian wood, 15% alcohol, 5.5g acid, 1.4g residual sugar.
Strong ruby red. Fresh, intense and herbal nose, still youthful, dark berries, black cherries, currants and a touch of animalism mix with hints of dark chocolate, a slightly herbal note swings. Straightforward on the palate, strong, very opulent, distinctive tannins, very good structure, the wine has a lot of potential and already shows finesse. The acidity gives this power pack a pleasant freshness despite the high alcohol content. The finish is very long-lasting, spicy, full of dark fruits.”

La Trinità Villányi Franc 2017
Andreas Larsson, Tasted.com, 92 points / 100

The Sweedish born, France based sommelier world champion wrote the following: “Inky dark purple core and hue. Ripe nose showing violet, cassis, plum and new oak notes. Good substance on the palate, ripe dark fruit with well-rounded yet present tannin adding freshness, some oak derived toast and spice, ripe and warm yet balanced with a long and meaty finish.”

Trinitás Villányi Franc 2016
Andreas Larsson, Tasted.com, 93 points / 100

With this 93 score result Trinitás is the Hungarian red with the highest scores on Tasted.com along with NJK from Kovács Nimród Winery. “Intense dark purple colour. The nose starts with some new oak and toast paired with ripe black fruit, cassis, plum, tobacco and fine spices. Very good grip on the palate, dense but fresh dark fruit with pepper, clove, fine wood and tobacco notes, young but ripe tannin with a long and layered finish. Decanter World Wine Awards 2021, gold medal, 95 points / 100

The rigorous British international wine contest is not generous with gold medals, thus a Decanter gold is highly appreciated everywhere. “Serious and classy nose with lots of spicy character, ripe dark cherriesand plums. Lovely depth of fruit supporting the alcohol and grainy tannins.“

*Pig killing: a rural tradition in Hungary and some other Central Eastern European countries. The activity is not similar to Spanish bullfights, here the reason of the killing is simply to process the meat (and other parts) of a pig when it reaches the proper age and weight. Since an adult pig is very strong, several men are needed to conduct the slaughter. And if they are together doing the hard work all day, certainly they drink several ‘pálinka’ shots (the origin protected fruit spirit of Hungary). Since Hungary joined the European Union, pig killing takes place in an EU comform manner.

Wine of the Weekend

Heumann Winery cannot count the “highest scores” and other great results nowadays (in our latest article Heumann Trinitás was named the price-value champion due to a Vinum magazine panel tasting). . In November, for example, Heumann Villányi Franc 2016 received the highest score among red wines in Wine Enthusiast wine magazine. The name of the wine was Trinitás after the name of the vineyard, but in the US they cannot use the name due to trademark issues. A Californian winery is called Trinitás, and thus the name on a Hungarian red wine in the US market can be confusing.

Nevertheless it has been quickly sold out on Taste Hungary’s online store in the US, hopefully the new vintage arrives soon. Jeff Jensen, wine writer of Wine Enthusiast gave 91 scores to the wine. “This Hungarian Cabernet Franc is ruby garnet in the glass with aromas of blackberry, bramble and red pepper. It has aromas of cranberry, pomegranate, red raspberry and black cherry. It is well balanced with velvety tannins and bright acidity in the finish.”

And how about the new vintage?

Listen to Andreas Larsson world champion sommelier, who gave 92 points to La Trinità, the 2017 vintage of Heumann Villányi Franc. (La Trinitá means the same, the holy trinity in latin.) “Inky dark purple core and hue. Ripe nose showing violet, cassis, plum and new oak notes. Good substance on the palate, ripe dark fruit with well-rounded yet present tannin adding freshness, some oak derived toast and spice, ripe and warm yet balanced with a long and meaty finish.”

More about Heumann Winery

Heumann wines are available in several countries, for example in Switzerland at Le Bouchon Vinothek and in the US by Taste Hungary.

If you can’t find an importer near you, you can order Heumann wines from Winelovers Webshop, they ship to every European country.

We have been informed that several foreign wine experts are stuck in Hungary, for example the editor-in-chief of the Italian WineMag.it, Davide Bortone. He has received some samples and working on an article now, but of course he is happy to receive some more. If you are interested, write to us. If you are also stuck in Hungary, take this opportunity and learn about the colourful wineworld of Hungary! On our website you can find plenty of information on wine regions, a grape dictionary, a vocabulary on wine styles and recommendations of wineries. Now almost all of these wineries offer free or discounted delivery, and by ordering wine, you also help them. Because small and medium size quality wineries suffer severely with loss of orders from gastronomy. These high quality wines are usually not available in supermarkets, thus now the only way to taste them is to order them online. Heumann Winery in Villány makes stunning wines, we have recently posted about their Rhine Riesling, and their Cabernet Franc called Trinitás Villányi Franc is also a wine with several international acknowledgements (here is a recent one from Jan van Lissum in Dutch). “Dark bright purple.
