Sándor Petőfi, the renowned poet and an importnt character of the revolution of 1848–49 must have popped in this event to cheer with a glass of bubbly. He liked wine, it is clearly known from his poems. Now his statue stands in Március 15. square near the River Danube, where Kiosk bistro is situated. This trendy place will host Borjour Spark!, a sparkling tasting on 13–14 August. The two day event will feature every type of bubbled wines: champagne, cava, prosecco and certainly Hungarian sparkling wines. About 30 different bottle fermented sparkling wines will be available, and the entrance fee is only the purchase of a glass (1500 HUF). Wine samples are to be paid directly at the exhibitors’ booths.

Elegance dressed in pink

One of the Hungarian sparkling wines not to miss is Teleki Tradíció 1881 Pinot Noir Rosé Brut, the first méthode traditionnelle sparkling wine of Csányi Winery in Villány. László Romsics used to be the chief winemaker of Törley, thus sparkling has always been a passion for him. As the CEO of Csányi Winery it was important for him to prove that the mediterranean Villány is able to produce elegant, ethereal sparkling wine from Pinot Noir. He was right.

“Elegant, pale colour of peach with fine bubbles. Intense, complex nose with peach, orange and subtle yeast with some citrus notes. On the palate finely woven texture, firm structure, crystal clear flavours. Fresh, vibrant acidity makes the sparkling wine vivacious and refreshing, enhancing the fruity character. Ethereal, feather light with tiny, melting bubbles. Perfect harmony. Taste it slowly finding pleasure in every sip.”

This photo was shot in Greece in a dream island, where a bottle of Garamvári Blanc Fleur Brut was taken with the traveller. Travelling is getting extremely complicated these days, no schedule is secured, therefore every moment of this summer’s vacation is even more precious.

Garamvári Blanc Fleur is a single vineyard, bottle fermented sparkling wine made of 100% Pinot Blac. The creator is Vencel Garamvári, the “doyen” of Hungarian quality sparkling wines.

“Flowery bouquet, slim and elegant appearance, refreshing acids, and dainty, pearl-like bubbles. Pinot blanc base wine is fruity, the citrus tastes and bouquet conjure up the mediterranean nights, cleanness of mountain springs. Recommended as accompanying light dishes, vegetables, pastry, fishes and poultry, but it can stand alone as well, chilled to 6 – 7 C⁰. The acidic structure is light and agreeable, thus it is a very much liked sparkling type of the ladies.”

Hungary is among the safest countries with only 4258 COVID–19 cases to date. Citizens of most European countries are allowed to enter without restrictions, but measures keep changing, before travelling, check actual information here.

According to Zoltán Németi wine blogger on screwcapped.com Sauska Rosé 2019 from Villány is one of the best Hungarian rosé wines. “Poised, elegant, not a hair out of place. Crisp and refreshing, but acidity is integrated. There is some structure to it, well judged firmness that gives some length and seriousness without sacrificing lightness and drinkability. So enjoyable. A complete wine.” As for its value for 6-7 euros, he simply says: fantastic value, buy, buy, buy. We can only agree with him, and the same is true for the winery’s bottle fermented Sauska Rosé Brut from Tokaj region. The blend is made of Furmint, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Hárslevelű, and due to this unique combination of grape varieties the palate is exciting, refreshing and above all playful. The 9 grams sugar makes it a charming, easy to enjoy sparkling, and since it spent 15 months on the lees, there is no lack of integrated, fine bubbles. A sparkling wine full of zest, one that gives you impetus – which is finely expressed in this photo. So why not paint it pink with Sauska? If you happen to stay in Budapest, you can enjoy the blessing of express delivery by Bortársaság wine store.

Koch Chardonnay Brut

Csaba Koch is famous for putting his relatively unknown wine region, Hajós–Baja on the wine map of Hungary. His winery was awarded Winery of the Year in 2014, and he implemented a system called „happy vines” (see below). He is equally good at making great price-value ratio entry level wines and at creating wine selections with great care (just think of his Csanád Cuvée made of Bordeaux varieties and achieved several international medals, plus a recent award by Hungarian Winewriters). He has also made an adventure to the world of natural sweet wines with a late harvest Chardonnay, an ice wine made of Rhine Riesling, and a so called Snow Wine as well. And now, the new hit has arrived, a superb bottle fermented sparkling wine!

„Too good to spare”

„We have bottled 4000 bottles, but it proved to be so delicious that most of it has been consumed by now” – said Csaba when we asked him about the „new child”. The fruit comes from Szenes vineyard, where the soil is the famous „Bácska black soil” rich in limestone and micro elements suitable for sparkling wines. 2016 vintage was an ideal one, thus Csaba Koch started to fulfill this dream: with the help of a Russian expert he conducted the sparkling production in his own winery. Manual riddling and bottle fermentation took place in the winery as well. No expedition liquor was added, the sparkling wine is still brut, because the base wine had a little residual sugar. The resulting sparkling wine is elegant, rich in flavours, has a creamy texture, fine bubbles. As Dr. József Kosárka wine expert and international wine judge describes: „Intense on the nose. The palate reminds us of the flavours of the classic sparkling wines with fruity notes. Vibrant acidity, subtle, featherlight bubbles. Medium long finish, freshness and elegance.”

The ’happy grape’

Koch Winery has implemented his own vineyard techniques regarding canopy management in Hajós–Baja wine region. The owner and winemaker, Csaba Koch studied biology, he is an oneologist and agricultural engineer, and his main concern is the vine and its wellbeing. The main point of the special grape growing method is that after a srtict pruning and canes tying (sylvoz training system), buds are not hid, the free growing of the vine is not obstacled in any way. The result is a relatively big, airy canopy that grows according to the needs of the plant around the wires. The plant grows as much canopy as it needs for the optimal photosynthesis. A small proportion of the leaves is cut at the end of the summer. The result is high quality and low costs, since the vineyards saves a lot of manual work. The vine plant is happy, because it can absorb and use as much sunshine as possible.
