For the Winter Edition of Berliner Wine Trophy 2019, 1,426 participants from 41 countries have submitted a record of 7000 products– the maximum acceptable number of samples. The results are available, and we are proud to announce that 29 Hungarian wines received medals: there are 2 great gold medals (Füleky Tokaji Aszú 6 puttonyos 2013 and Gród Degendeld Tokaji Aszú 6 puttonyos), 23 gold medals and 4 silver medals. The great golds are not surprisingly the precious dessert wines from Tokaj, but for our great pleasure several wines made of indigenous varieties were also awarded.

Bock Cellar: 2 gold medals

The iconic winery from Villány submitted two wines, and both received gold medal. The winner white blend, Bock & Roll Cuvée 2017 is made of 4 grapes: the small percentage of Rizlingszilváni and Hárslevelű masterfully contrast with the insinuating aroma of Sauvignon Blanc, while the Chardonnay provides the body in the mouth. In its aftertaste can be found the character of limestone and minerals. The red blend, Bock Cuvée 2012 is the cellar’s flagship wine, a cuvee of Bordeaux wines: Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Cabernet Franc (30%) and Merlot (10%). It is matured first for 24 months in new, small oak barrels after which it develops further for at least another three years in bottles. The current vintage is 2014.

A gold winner Kadarka

Gere Tamás & Zsolt Kadarka 2015 is also a gold winner, also from Villány. A great piece of news for many of us, who adore Kadarka, a grape variety mostly known for giving every day, easy drinking wines, but which is capable of outstanding quality as well. The fruit for this selection wine comes from legendary Kopár vineyard, and it is made traditionally, fermented in open vat, then it was matured in small Hungarian oak for 6 months. Ideal with venison and wild boar dishes.

A shiny Grüner Veltliner

Zöld Veltelini is considered a local grape in Hungary, though it is probably slightly more famous in neighbouring Austria as Grüner Veltliner. Tűzkő Estate is situated in Tolna wine region, south of Hungary, and the estate is owned by the iconic Tuscan family, the Antinoris. Tűzkő Grüner Veltliner 2018 won a silver medal at this year edition of the German competition. „Greenish pale colour. Its aromas are reminiscent of white pepper, white flesh peach with some smoky tones. Mineral notes and green herbs decorate the palate of peach and citrus. Juicy wine with vibrant acidity presenting the typical peppery and citrus characteristics of the variety.”
