4th December: International Cabernet Franc Day

Tomorrow this Bodeaux grape variety is celebrated all over the world, following the initiative of a Californian couple. The date is connected to the French Cardinal Richelieu, because he helped spread the variety in the Loire valley, France, and 4 December is the date of his death (in 1642). Loire is an important region for Cabernet Franc, so is Villány in the south of Hungary, where full bodied, yet elegant, complex wines are made of the variety under the name Villányi Franc. The annual Cabernet Franc event is held in November every year, but December is again a good month to celebrate the variety. Heumann is a small, quality winery with 12 organically farmed hectares in Siklós, a lovely town in Villány wine region. Erhard, a Swiss banking expert left his career for wine, and with his German wife, Evelyne, they make outstanding wines with the outmost aim of perfection, and reflection of the terroir. Recently Tamlyn Currin British wine writer published an article on JancisRobinson.com and praised their rosé wine: „…And then there’s a saltiness that leaves you wanting another sip, and which makes this most certainly not-just-another-summer-rosé. This wine has substance – you’re pairing it with food, not weather.” The rosé is a good example of Heumann’s perfectionism, just like their Trintitás Villányi Franc, which was given 92 scores by Andreas Larsson (Best Sommelier of the World). The fruit comes from loess soil with a quite high portion of limestone. The wine was fermented in stainless steel and aged in Hungarian barrique for 24 months. „Black fruits in the nose with a hint of vanilla and pepper. On the palate black berries and cassis plus a hint of dark chocolate. Well-integrated acidity and great structure with finely grained tannins. Full bodied yet elegant and fruity wine with a very long aftertaste.”
