The new Gere Solus is released
One of the last wines Steven Spurrier tasted
„Black red, really finely concentrated Merlot and better tannins than expected, will be a total vineyard wine of stunning quality.” – commented Steven Spurrier about Solus 2018, when he visited Gere A Winery in Villány this January.
Released when ready
The icon Merlot from Kopár vineyard, Solus is made only in the best vintages. The first Solus came from 2000, and since then the aim has remained the same: to create a balanced, super elegant, complex wine from an outstanding terroir, from only exceptional years. Compared to the warm and dry 2017, the following year was more balanced (though with some extreme weather conditions like frost in March and heat in April), thus the resulting wine is also harmonious, balanced, refined, subtle in its aromas and flavours.
Harvest took place in October, grapes came from 16–22 year old vines. Fermentation in large wooden vat, malolactic fermentation in barrel, ageing in new Hungarian oak barrel (225 L) for 16 months, followed by a year of bottle ageing.
Balance and elegance
“Amazing complexity with saline, mineral notes intermingling with fruit and sweet spices. The palate is dominated by aromas of plums, raspberries and sour cherries complemented by notes of dark chocolate and coffee. Firm tannins provide structure and longevity. A wine with great potential for bottle ageing.”
