„Fantastic value” Hungarian wines picked by Exotic Wine Travel

Matthew Horkey and Charine Tan, the constantly travelling bloggers behind Exotic Wine Travel have picked again some exciting wines in Hungary: Géró, a long macerated wine made of Hárslevelű grape by Hummel Winery (Villány), Céh Kereszt, a red wine made of special clones of Kadarka grape by Heimann Winery (Szekszárd) and a bottle fermented sparkling wine made of mainly Furmint grape in Somló, the smallest Hungarian wine region on volcanic soil. Kreinbacher Prestige Brut is a non-vintage sparkling, and as Matthey says enthusiastically it is „fantastic value” with creaminess, fine bubbles, yeasty character and lovely citrus notes. It is aged on the lees for at least 23 months, usually longer to achieve the refined structure. „More then remarkable sparkling wine for those who expect not an occasion, but a ‘prestige experience’” – according to the estate itself, and their statement is proved by several gold medals (for example from Tom Stevenson’s Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championship). Follow Matthew and taste these exciting wines in their homelands! Villány is a lovely town with a row of historic cellars, Szekszárd is the centre of a versatile wine region while Somló is on a volcanic mountain, and Kreinbacher Estate is an ideal place to stay with a bistro and some guest rooms.
