5 Hungarian gold medals at Mundus Vini

Best in Show: Grand Tokaj 6 puttonyos Szarvas Single Vineyard

With 33 Grand Gold, 1,102 Gold and 1,575 Silver the Spring Tasting of the Grand International Wine Award MUNDUS VINI came to a close last Sunday. Nearly 270 international wine experts from 44 countries spent the six days critically judging almost 6,770 wines from more than 150 wine growing regions all over the world. About 600 award-winning wines of the MUNDUS VINI Spring Tasting will be presented to the trade audience at the world’s largest wine trade fair, the ProWein in Düsseldorf, taking place from 18–20 March 2018, at the MUNDUS VINI Tasting Area.

Sweet and Red wines with gold medal

As for the Hungarian results, 2 sweet white wines from Tokaj (a 6 puttonyos aszú and an icewine) were awarded gold besides 2 red wines of international varieties. And one surprise: a sweet sparkling wine made of Yellow Muscat. The Best of the Show goes to a stunning dessert wine from Tokaj: Szarvas 6 puttonyos Tokaji Aszú from 2013 by Grand Tokaj. Grand Tokaj’s wines representing the winery’s new spirit are made under the supervision of Károly Áts – winner of the title ’Winemaker of the Year’ in 2012 and famed for his 100 points Essencia – who has been the chief oenologist of the company since 2013. ’I was born in a wine region I believe to be a miracle’– regards Károly Áts, and just as our chief winemaker we are equally committed to this special wine region with its uniqueness and greatness. ‘Our mission is to restore it to it’s former glory.’
The winner aszú comes from Szarvas vineyard, Tarcal. 2013 vintage was an outstanding vintage when berries were fully infected by the noble botrytis. The base wine is made of Furmint, while the aszú berries were of the two varieties: Furmint and Hárslevelű. The wine was aged for more than 18 months in oak barrel, the oak comes from the same region (’Zemplén’ oak). Sugar content is 214 g/l. The nose is full of aromas: notes of loess based soil, pear, dried chamomile, candied orange peel and a touch of smokiness from the new barrel. Pear compote and ripened orange on the palate with honey and chamomile tea. Creamy texture, the blessing of sunshine, amazing structure!

Koch Cabernet Sauvignon: another gold winner

Csaba Koch is based in Hajós–Baja region, but he has vineyards in Villány as well. This full flavoured, fulll bodied, fruity wine was created with the intention of an artist. The wine is in the Premium classification of Villány. The grape comes from Csaba Koch’s own vineyard, the harvest was carried on with the highest care and attention, and after a selection of the berries the wine was fermented in the traditional way in wooden vat, then aged in oak barrel.
