Getting high in Sopron
Wine & Food weeks and a hotel above the city
Sopron wine region started a joined restaurants & wineries campaign last year, and “Soproni Ízkavalkád”, the ‘Festivity of Flavours in Sopron’ has returned. Deák restaurant offers a wide selection of dishes paired with local wine, while the renewed Hotel Sopron promises relaxing stay, a great “house wine” and a stunning view of Sopron.

‘Festivity of Flavours in Sopron’
Last year 10 restaurants joined the initiative, while this year we can find only two restaurants offering special pairings, Erhardts and Deák. The organisers hope to have more eateries joining the programme therefore it will be more than worth returning to the website of Sopron wine region. The text is only in Hungarian at the moment, however the pairings of Deák restaurant (in the photo) are translated into English as well, you can see them at the bottom, under the photos of the winemakers. Let us introduce three of the pairings:
– Thai sweet potato cream soup with salted peanuts
paired with Taschner Irsai Olivér 2015
– Grilled goat cheese, fresh salad with mango and honey-orange vinaigrette
paired with Steigler Bio Zöldveltelini (Grüner Veltliner) 2024
– Braised beef cheek in Bakony-style (with mushroom and sour cream) with homemade dumplings
paired with Esterházy Kúria Kékfrankos 2020 by Kúria Sopron
The campaign of restaurants & wineries ends on 23 March.

Hotel above the Faithful City
Stay at Hotel Sopron, a few minutes’ walk from the centre of the city, above the city, with spectacular view of the symbol of Sopron, the Fire Tower. The hotel has a restaurant called Zakant aiming to serve the guests with plates of fine dining at approachable price (see the weekday business lunch offer). The house wine is provided by the organic Steigler Cellar.
