Somló estate Furmint receives „sparkling Oscar trophy”

As we reported earlier, Somló wine region Kreinbacher Estate has won two gold and two silver medals at the latest edition of CSWWC(Champagne and Sparkling Wine Competition). Being medal winner, the estate was invited to the award ceremony in London on 24th October. And there the great surprise came: Kreinbacher Prestige Brut Magnum 2013 is not only a gold winner, but also the Best Hungarian Sparkling Wine and on top of that it has become the World Champion Classic Brut from a Non-Traditional Grape! With the other gold medal magnum (written below the photo) 2 of the 25 trophies went to Kreinbacher! Essi Avellan MW, judge of the prestigious competition handed the trophies to the happy representatives of the estate in front of a ‘who’s who’ gathering of over 150 internationalwinemakers, producers and journalists at Merchant Taylors’ Hall in London. Other trophies went to renowned houses like Roederer (World Champion Classic Brut Non-Vintage Blend) or Ruinart (World Champion Classic Blanc de Blancs). Founder and head judge Tom Stevenson commented “We have been really impressed by the standard of entries this year. The bar was set high from day one and the medal count certainly reflects this. We were delighted to see Kreinbacher produce a sparkling wine of such quality and take the crown for World Champion Classic Brut from a Non-Traditional Grape for producing a sparkling wine made from 100% Furmint.”

Another magnum, another trophy

As written above, Kreinbacher won another gold medal with Kreinbacher Brut Classic Magnum 2015– and this wine has also received a trophy: it has been selected the Best Future Release. If you are interested in this amazing sparkling wine, you are lucky, because the wine has just been released, and the above written Prestige Brut Magnum 2013 is also available in limited quanity. Brut Classic 2015 Magnum is made of 85% Furmint, 15% Chardonnay.The blend is aged for three years on the lees to obtain a rich, elegant sparkling wines. Limited edition in numbered bottles and design carton.

The champion in details: Prestige Brut 2013 Magnum, 100% Furmint

The most outstanding sparkling wine of the estate attained a richer and more harmonious character in the magnum bottle, the bubbles are notably smooth. After more than three years ageing on the lees it reveals a sophisticated complexity on the nose: flowers, lime and mango, a touch of roasted hazelnuts and toast. Smooth and elegant, the mousse is complete. Well-structured sparkling wine with neat aromas and refreshing acidity lingering in the palate. Remarkable length. Limited edition in numbered bottles and design carton.

2018 was a ground-breaking year for the Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships in terms of the increase in entries from USA, UK, Austria, Brazil, Chile, Eastern Europe, Hungary and South Africa which averaged in excess of 75% of all entries. A total of 25 trophies were awarded from 68 Best in Class winners, including 9 National Champions, 7 World Champions by Style and the Chairman’s Trophy, presented this year to Dominique Demarville, Chef de Caves of Veuve Clicquot. The Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships, for the first time, also saw Lifetime Achievement Awards go to the late Thierry Roset of Champagne Charles Heidsieck, the late Michel Salgues, Sparkling Wine Consultant. Stevenson went on to say said, “However it is our mission not just to promote world class wines, but also to discover and reward new and exciting wines from established and emerging regions across the world, so I was particularly pleased to present Carassia, from Romania, with the World Champion Rising Star trophy.
