Riesling rules

Riesling is a key variety for us, and we enjoy exploring its many faces. Within a single vintage, we produce several styles: a Mosel-inspired off-dry wine with residual sugar, a fresh stainless steel-fermented version, as well as barrel-aged and spontaneously fermented wines. This results in a diverse and exciting Riesling range to taste.

Some of our wines are aged in our old vaulted cellars, where time plays an important role in shaping their character. The result is a selection of wines in bright, beautiful colors — from pale gold through rosé to deep ruby — reminiscent of the phoenix’s feathers.

An indigenous grape variety from the Muscat family, Irsai Olivér is an aromatic, light-structured wine—perfect for summer.
May is the favourite month of many–especially in the Northern Hemisphere–due to its beauty and its abundance in flowers. In the Ancient Rome, people celebrated Maia, the goddess of fertility and the coming of summer. In Hungary today we celebrate the beginning of a new era with a new government, and with the promise that we will never be oppressed again by our own politicians. Bubbles are to celebrate, so let us recommend three novelties from the sparkling scene

Fehérvári Reserve Brut Rosé, Somló

“Leave the barriers behind: our Reserve Brut Rose rosé sparkling wine is a celebration of freedom given by self-confidence.” The embodiment of May: floral, uplifting, charming. This bottle fermented sparkling wine is made of Furmint, Hárslevelű, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and some red wine is added for the colouring. The traditional method sparkling wine ages on the lees for at least 24 months. 7000 bottles are made annually, and last year it won gold medal at Vinagora international competition.
What is the novelty? The winery itself, with centuries of history, but with a new era from only 2019. And another novelty: Fehérvári Reserve Rosé Brut is now available in magnum format. With a retail price (winery webshop) of 6299 HUF / around 18 EUR. The magnum retail price is 17 499 HUF / 50 EUR.

Cseri Blabla aerated sparkling wine, Pannonhalma

Cseri Winery itself is a novelty on Hungarianwines.eu, we are just about to work with this young and ambitious family winery from the must-be-on-the-radar wine region of Pannonhalma. “Blabla” is a funny Hungarian word, it refers to cheerful chatting, usually with not much content. No wonder, the parents were inspired by the discussions of the new generation–and surely these talks contain a lot of “blabla”. But BLA is also the three initials of the three representatives of the younger generation: Barna, Lilla and Aguszta.
Blabla is an aerated sparkling wine made of Pinot Blanc, Rhine Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Traminer. The retail price (winery webshop) is only around 7-8 EUR.
Cseri wines are available in some countries, for example in Poland at Kociolek i Wino (Warsaw). If you want to import Cseri wines, contact the winery.

Krisztina Csetvei simply “cannot do not new things”, creativity is in her DNA. The recent, 3rd edition of their Vinyl & Wine project with her husband includes a bottle (or 6) of Szürkebarát Petnat), and she also made petnat of Zöldveltelini (Grüner Veltliner), the list of petnats continues. The new member is made of Juhfark, the main grape of Somló, since Csetvei Cellar has a vineyard in Somló as well (though the winery itself is located in Mór wine region). What’s more, there is a Chardonnay Petnat, which will soon be available for on Autistic Art webshop to raise money for the Autistic Art Foundation. The petnats are available at the cellar in Mór – well worth a visit!

Visit Babarczi Vineyard and Winery

The so called “Open Cellars” is an annual, nationwide event at Pentecost weekend. On 23 May wine enthusiasts are quite likely to “bump into a cellar”, since almost all of them are open and prepared for the visitors. Pannonhalma wine region is “cool” in many aspects, and Babarczi family winery awaits its guests with delicious food, live music, guided tastings and treat even for the unlucky driver.

Professor Gergely Szolnoki (Geisenheim University, Germany) has recently said in a conference that to be competitive in the market, cellars should offer extras and should think of the non-drinkers as well. The Babarczis have always been doing so, without having heard the professor’s advice.
Transfers are provided by the wine region, but if you prefer going by car, your driver will be well treated.

5 reasons to visit Babarczi Vineyard and Winery

– Pannonhalma wine region is one of the less known wine regions of Hungary, however, its importance is constantly growing. Discover it before others!
– Due to its cooler climate, wines of Pannonhalma are elegant, crispy, refreshing.
– It is a versatile wine region and Babarczi estate represents this versatility perfectly. Aromatic, refreshing Irsai Olivér, majestic Chardonnay and Rhine Riesling, playful aerated sparkling wine and a whole line of remarkable, complex red wines.
– The winery surrounded by a large courtyard and vineyards will make you feel at home. Cosy atmosphere and lovely staff including Zsuzsa Babarczi, the perfect hostess of the house and Ali, the “perpetuum mobile” dog of the estate.
– Events are the core of the winery to create a community of “Babarczi-lovers”, and as a result the team is experienced in these open-door things, they really know what makes guests feel good.

Panel tasting results

47 Rhine Riesling reviews are published in the latest issue of Vince Hungarian print wine magazine. 4 wines received 5 stars, the highest recognition, 2 wines from Australia and 2 wines from Hungary. Let us introduce Pannonhalmi Prior 2024, the wine from the cover of the magazine.

Intense and beautiful

The grape for Prior was harvested in several stages, the crop from a prestigious single vineyard was handled separately. Following destemming and selecting the grapes by an optical sorting machine, the pressed juice was settled and then slowly cold-fermented in stainless steel tanks and finally kept on the fine lees for a long time.
Vince panel review:
“A lemon-yellow hue with greenish undertones. An intense and beautiful, varietal aroma of ripe citrus, green apple, linden blossom, and mineral notes. A wine with a firm structure and crisp acidity, featuring the slight residual sugar so characteristic of Rieslings. On the palate, honey, grape blossoms, juicy pear, ripe citrus, petrol, and stony minerality linger for a long time.”
Pannonhalma Archabbey Winery has a very detailed website. We have every piece of information about the vineyard (like planted in 2023, Guyot training system, low cordon, 5210 vines / hectare) and about the wine (it contains 6 g/L acidity and 3.3 g/L residual sugar), and extras like the number of bottles (5700) and the number of magnum bottles (600). The retail price (winery webshop) is only 6900 HUF (approximately 17.5 EUR)

Did you know?

– The word “prior” stands for a superior in abbeys, a prior comes after the abbot.
– Pannonhalma Archabbey is the only winery in Hungary that received the title Winery of the Year twice.
– Zsolt Liptai chief winemaker was named the Winemaker of the Year in 2024.

Pannonhalmi Aeternum by Babarczi Vineyard and Winery

Babarczi family winery has already been proved the potential of Pannonhalma wine region to make stunning, elegant red wines. Marianum Cabernet Franc, Babarczi Merlot and their estate wine called Birtokvörös have been acknowledged at national and international contests and panel tastings. The new red wine is a Bordeaux blend and just like Marianum commemorating the late Mrs Mária Babarczi, this new wine also has a Latin word in its name with ‘aeternum’ meaning ‘eternal’.

Babarczi Pannonhalmi Aeternum 2022

Grapes: Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon
Ageing: 12 months in French oak barrel, and the rest in bottle
Price: 13990 HUF, however, in February visitors to the estate can purchase it at 11990 HUF.
How to get to the winery? It takes about 90 minutes by car mostly via M1 motorway, and 2 hours with public transport. It is worth combining with a winery visit and tasting, for more information contact the winery.
Website of the estate

The philosophy behind the wine

It is more than challenging to run an estate, but the family is always there, a team built on love. Zsuzsanna, the daughter focuses on the winemaking, and meets the challenges together with her brother László, her sister-in-law and certainly with her father, the founder of the estate. Let us quote the rest from Babarczi team:

“For us, Aeternum is not just the launch of a new wine. It is an idea that originates from the family. From a relationship that spans generations and connects us even when time has changed so much. The family is the constant point to which we can always return. It sustains us, gives us strength, and carries us forward even when the weight of work, decisions, and the passing years becomes increasingly heavy.

This premium wine is about perseverance. About values that do not fade, do not go out of fashion, and are not made for the moment. Just as family ties are not for a short period of time, Aeternum also requires time and gives time. Attention, patience, presence.

Pannonhalmi Aeternum opens slowly. Its aroma first reveals spices, pink pepper, cloves, nutmeg, barrel vanilla, and a delicate smokiness. After a few minutes, it really opens up, filling the glass with cassis, eucalyptus, forest blackberries, plums, and forest cherries, with a background of dark chocolate and a hint of cedar. On the palate, it is a full-bodied, mature wine with a still-young tannin structure. It is worth waiting for. The oak notes return in the flavour, followed by fruit and chocolate, with spices and vanilla lingering in the finish. A serious wine with great potential.
A sip that transcends the moment.
A wine that stays with us. In aeternum.”

10 great wines to remember, #1

Towards the end of the year, we look back to some of the great wine moments we have enjoyed. All the 10 wines we will list until New Year’s Eve are special for some reason and they are all worth buying, multiple bottles, if you can afford. (The order is NOT a ranking.)
(Cover picture background was painted by Emma Katalin Dobos)

Pannonhalma is one of the smallest wine regions of Hungary, a place to watch. Babarczi is a family winery making crispy, lovely white and rosé wines, and recently producing memorable red wines as well.
Marianum, the name refers to the founder’s wife, the deceased mother, whose memory is cherished by the son and daughter, László and Zsuzsanna.
Marianum is a typical example of Cabernet Franc with a basket of berry fruits on the nose (blackberry, blueberry, red currant) and also a lot of spices, even a hint of oriental spices. It has a decent body, yet, I would say it is more of a sleek beauty than a blockbuster beast. It has its integrated tannins (the wine aged in French and Hungarian oak for 10 months), it has the body, it has pleasant acidity but most of all it has balance, elegance, harmony. A charming Cabernet Franc that leaves you cry for another glass.
It has been selected the Best Wine of Pannonhalma this year at the regional wine contest, where 113 wines were tasted.
In the latest issue of Vince wine magazine, Marianum received 4 stars, which means “outstanding”.

Vince magazine review:

Deep ruby colour. Complex, intense nose full of red fruits, especially sour cherry accompanied by some oaky notes and sweet spices. When tasted, it fills the mouth all around. Ripened, integrated tannins, silky texture, vibrant acidity. Fruity palate with significant barrel notes.
It has an ageing potential of at least 3 more years.
Retail price is around 25 EUR.

Borsmenta is full of wine reviews and recipes of mouth-watering dishes, it is more than worth following it! (Borsmenta is in Hungarian, but automatic translation is not an issue in our times.)

Zsuzsi’s diary, 1st chapter

My name is Zsuzsi Babarczi, and I am the winemaker and production and sales manager at Babarczi Winery. I was surprised and very excited when Edit Szabó (founder and editor-in-chief of Borsmenta) asked me to take part in this exciting adventure, namely to present my year. My first thought was whether people would be interested in what a female winemaker does on a daily basis, but then I decided to go for it – what did I have to lose?

The beginnings

Let me start at the beginning. There is an old photo of my mother planting grapes at the end of our garden, and I am already there with her, invisible, as she is pregnant with me – this was in 1980, to be precise. My parents bought a plot of land in the town of Győrújbarát at that time, planted grapes in the garden, and in 1986 they built a cellar as well. They thought it would be a nice little extra income alongside their main jobs. Then, in 1993, our lives took a turn: my dad lost his job, and since they were already working on about 5 hectares at the time, he decided to focus on that, but on a larger scale. The stars were aligned, as there were many vineyards for sale, so they invested all their savings in land and vines. Meanwhile, my brother and I were growing up, and between work and school, we didn’t have much time for anything else, no shopping malls or anything like that. I’m not saying that I preferred hoeing to going to Lake Balaton, but in those days, we didn’t really have a choice, and it was natural for our parents to involve us in the work.
However, studying always came first, and it never occurred to us not to continue our education. I knew for sure that I would not go to agricultural university, and if possible, I would seek my fortune as far away from viticulture and winemaking as possible. At that time, the international relations program (my father still cannot remember the name) started at Széchenyi István University in Győr, so I applied for that. I had always been interested in history, law, economics, and languages, and this program was a mixture of all of these. I later completed my master’s degree in Veszprém. I really enjoyed it.

Why did I buy a red bag?

I believe that we need to distance ourselves from home a little in order to rediscover ourselves and our goals, to see things in a slightly different light. To this end, I studied in Milan for two semesters on an Erasmus scholarship and spent 10 months as an intern in Zurich as part of the AIESEC program. These years taught me a lot in every respect. After returning home, I was still spreading my wings, first at a small Austrian company, then at a larger American multinational. I gained insight into how companies operate and gained experience in human and workplace relationships, which was also instructive. Then one day, I was called in by HR (which is never a good sign), and they told me that my position had been eliminated and I was being laid off. I admit, the news came as a shock, and that same day I bought the red bag I had been eyeing for four months.
I went home, it was harvest time, and my dad spread his arms wide, asking what I was doing home at 10 in the morning! Okay, I’ll go inside and reflect on my fate today, but tomorrow I’ll join the harvest – there’s no time for depression. I thought of this work at home as a temporary period, but as we know, life turned out differently.

Wine opens doors

At first, I worked in the cellar under my dad’s supervision and did administrative work with my mom while looking for a job. Then one day my dad came to me and said he was organising a trip to Tuscany for Sopron wine region (who wouldn’t want to go to Tuscany?!), followed by the winter fair, which was still a good source of income at the time, and there were many other similar motivating trips and tastings. I saw the other side of this world beyond hoeing, pruning, harvesting, and tank washing – to mention only the hardest or least favourite jobs. Wine opens doors, brings people together, and always connects me with something good, with parties. On the other side, there is a fixed point, a place, but you can travel alongside it, see the world, and grow.

The power of family unity

Then, after a year of working together, my father had a stroke, and there was no question that I would get seriously involved, as he was no longer part of the daily routine. Many people ask me what the secret of our success is, and I would definitely highlight one thing: family unity. Since 2010, the one-man show has been replaced by teamwork, both within the family and at the company. The winery, the family, and I myself have undergone a tremendous transformation. I can smile now when I think back on those initial uncertain steps. Every year, every harvest brings challenges and difficulties, but also many experiences and opportunities. How I see things depends, of course, on my mood and the situation.
Just like the past years, the coming years will also bring positive and negative surprises. Get to know the Babarczi family, the foundation of Babarczi Winery, our present, our future, my colleagues, and me! I invite you to join me on this journey!

To be continued…

Pannonhalmi Infusio 2022, Pannonhalma

Grapes: Merlot and Cabernet Franc
How was it made: After being destemmed, the grapes were fermented in 60 hl stainless steel tanks. The fermentation took place on a temperature of 30-32°C during the first 10 days of the long skin contact. The wine was aged in new and secondly used mostly Hungarian and in a tiny part American 228-litre-barrels for 19 months.
Description: Ripe bramble and cranberry simultaneously appear on the nose, completed by the aroma of vanilla coming from the wooden barrels. The balance of extract sweetness, alcohol and mature tannins results in a mellow taste evoking the concentrated notes of dried sour-cherry and plum as well as coffee and chocolate. It is a serious and elegant wine with Mediterranean notes and a high aging potential.
The wine is sold out at the winery, so, you Belgians are lucky!

Do you know how much a “hemina” of wine is? “Hemina is the proper daily amount of wine – if you drink it, you find God, but it is not enough to make you vulnerable for the devil’s temptation.” According to the explanation of the team of the winery, Saint Benedict’s rule does not define the exact amount… (Read more here.) So, if you enjoy well chilled wine on the stunning wine terrace of Pannonhalma Archabbey Winery, you do not have to have remorse, as long as you consume your own Hemina…
Where: Vár 1. Pannonhalma, 9090 (Pannonhalma wine region)
How to get there: It takes approximately 90 minutes by car from Budapest via M1. By public transport the best way is to take an IntercCity train to the city of Győr, then a bus to Pannonhalma (‘vár főkapu’ stop).

Homola Paloznak – jazz is all around

Lake Balaton is an obligatory place for every tourist and also for Hungarians – we cannot live without the unique, light blue colour of the lake. Now, imagine a place, which is slightly farther away from the buzzling beach, yet it offers the stunning view of the lake, and the wine terrace has its own buzzling life all the summer (and longer). Outstanding wines, great food and unparalleled mood.
Where: 8229 Paloznak, Vincellér utca 0534 (Balatonfüred–Csopak wine region)
How to get there: By car it takes approximately 90 minutes from Budapest via M7. By public transport tha fastest way is to take a “sebesvonat” (faster passenger train) from Budapest, stop at Csopak and walk about 20 minutes.
Opening hours: Thursday, Friday and Saturday: 14.00–21.00, Sunday: 14.00–20.00 (closed on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday)
What to taste: Homola Winery makes stunning bottle fermented sparkling wines made of our flagship white and black indigenous grapes (Furmint and Kékfrankos). Olaszrizling, the grape of Balaton is obligatory here, and do not miss the Kékfrankos still red wines, they impressed Andrii Stetsiuk of JamesSuckling.com!
