Csányi Winery is located on the outskirts of the town of Villány, the predecessor of which, was established by Zsigmond Teleki in 1881. The owners considered the traditions important, therefore they left the old system of cellars––now a rarity––almost intact, and built a modern winery above it that meets today’s demands.

We embrace moderation and seek to understand the wine we consume. At the same time, we believe that traditions can be challenged: the world of wine is a broad realm where everyone can be true to themselves, discovering their interests and preferences. We feel that these are the values that can genuinely help us shape the future of the wine industry. Zsigmond Teleki led the way in grape breeding in Hungary and brought a fresh perspective to grape and wine culture. Without his efforts, we wouldn’t have vineyards in Hungary today, nor talk about wines — his legacy still defines the daily life and long-term goals of Csányi Pincészet. We aim to continue nurturing his innovative role with the TELEKI brand today.

CLIMATE

The location and orientation of the Villány mountains make it an ideal area for grape cultivation. The southern slopes of its east-west oriented mountain range create a distinct microclimate in this area. The area is characterized by a warm climate with a moderate amount of rainfall. The annual average temperature ranges between 10-11 °C, which is slightly higher than the national average, but the total amount of sunshine per year is high, varying between 2100-2150 hours. The late summer is the sunniest period. Spring frosts can occur up to mid of April, with the frost-free period generally lasting until the second half of October. The southern slopes have over 200 frost-free days. This special terroir optimal for grapevines, coupled with our colleagues’ expertise, knowledge and passion for wine ensures that every drop of Teleki wine promises a fine taste sensation and high quality.

GRAPE GROWING AND WINEMAKING

Our vineyards are located on the most prestigious slopes of the Villány wine region. On the south-facing, loess-soil slope of Hársos, we cultivate the region’s traditional variety, Portugieser, along with Bordeaux varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. In Csillagvölgy-dűlő, we have planted Blaufränkisch and Syrah varieties and the vineyards in Kopár-dűlő produce premium wines thanks to the high number of sunlit hours. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay also serve as the base material for our sparkling wine made using the méthode traditionnelle, while our white wines are made from the most popular domestic varieties, including Irsai Olivér, Olaszrizling, Hárslevelű and Chardonnay. At our winery, we not only produce wines but also craft and bottle our sparkling wine entirely on-site. We have recently completed our sparkling wine bottling facility, which allows us to keep every step of the sparkling wine production in our own hands, thereby ensuring quality and honoring tradition.

The innovation we previously referred to is also manifested in our unique wines: we offer varieties that are not widely available in other wineries within the country. We showcase the Petit Verdot as a varietal wine as well as the three characters of Syrah: in the form of a rosé, a red wine and even a white semi-sparkling wine. Our newest plantations from 2023 yield Malbec and Grüner Veltliner grapes. Nestled at the base of the Villány Mountains, our processing facility houses the largest cellar in the wine region, spanning a total of 1,000 meters including its side branches. While we have the necessary technology for forward-thinking wine crafting, we also keep in mind existing wine production traditions, which aim to reliably present the value generated in the grapes to the maximum extent. Following traditional ageing in wooden barrels and barrique, our wines undergo a secure bottling process using the most advanced bottling production line available today.

„When I was a child, my parents had a small Oportó vineyard in Villány, in the Csillagvölgy area, so I got to know the wine region at an early age. Perhaps that’s where my connection to wine and this region comes from. Over the past twenty years or so, I’ve explored the world of wine from New Zealand to California, and I’ve visited nearly every wine region in Europe. During this time, I didn’t focus on mastering techniques or technologies, but rather on understanding the mindset of different wine regions and the people who work there. I learned what values can lead a wine region or a brand to success.
