Grand Tokaj and „the 100 scored king”

Károly Áts is one of the most famous Hungarian winemakers (his 1999 Tokaj Esszencia received 100 scores by Wine & Spirit Magazine and another 100 scores for 2007 by Robert Parker), and Grand Tokaj is the only state owned winery in Hungary, a so called „national treasure”, and also the largest winery in Tokaj wine region.  The single vineyard Kővágó Furmint is a zesty, delicious, ample dry wine: „The refreshing character of the wine is nicely combined with the flavours of Furmint grape, and it is backed by the minerality of Kővágó vineyard in Mád. Due to new oak fermentation and maturation the palate shows some subtle smokiness, the body of Furmint grape along with its vibrant citrus character. Full bodied wine with great length – and some mineral-salty touch in the finish.”

Vesztergombi Cabernet Franc is barrel aged for 18 months and is typical of the variety. If you miss the masterclasses, you can still taste wines at Vesztergombi’s booth, do not miss Csaba, a multi award winner blend names after Csaba Vesztergombi, the son of the founder. „The flagship wine of our cellar, a typical Bordeaux blend with more or less equal proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. It is made only in exceptional vintages, and we insist on this principle of ours even if painfully long years pass without having the chance to create the wine. We are keen on constant high quality.”

Frittmann Winery – autochton grapes in abundance

Kunság wine region was placed on the map of educated winelovers by the Frittmann brothers. They resisted the temptation of the local tradition to make fake wines in large quantities, what they did was quality winemaking from the very beginning. The Frittmann’s efforts were rewarding: the winery received several prestigious prizes like Winery of the Year and Winemaker of the Year. Ezerjó is a local grape that they use for both sparkling and still wine, the aromatic varieties are also important like Irsai Olivér or Cserszegi Fűszeres and Generosa is a variety used probably only by them. „Light straw yellow colour. When smelling, the wine glass is full of peach and pear. The alcohol, the acidity and the body gives a light, still round structure. On the palate yellow fruits and refreshing citrus fruits, and all these components result an easy drinking, lively, light hearted wine.”
