Gere Cab Franc from the Devil’s Trench
“With time they get more and more elegant” – says Andrea Gere in a video about Cabernet Franc wines. Though Franc & Franc event is cancelled this year, we can enjoy the wonderful Cabernet Franc wines from Villány, the so called Villányi Franc wines at home. Andrea is Attila Gere’s daughter, and she is in the front line now leading the family estate. As she explains in a recent video, Cabernet Franc is the closest to her heart out of the Bordeaux varieties. The wine of this grape is exciting in Villány, and it develops well in the bottle. At Gere Attila Winery they decided to bottle single vineyard Cab Francs to show the merits of the different terroirs. One is from Csillagvölgy (‘Star Valley’), the other is from Ördögárok (‘Devil’s Trench’).
Exciting and smooth
Andrea comments that “Devil’s Trench is really a trench or couldron, a closed vineyard where heat is usually stuck, thus the resulting wine is always velvety, silky, the tannins are never harsh.” Ördögárok Villányi Franc shows elegance even at early age, but it has a long potential. It also shows some nice minerality coming from the limestone in the soil, thanks to the age of the vines and their roots deep in the soil. As a result of several years of experimenting by now the Gere family has got recipe for the stunning Cabernet Franc: the wine matures in small (300 L) barrels for 16 months.
