Matador – a serious new gastronomic player in Etyek

Haraszthy Winery, situated within half an hour’s drive from Budapest in Etyek wine region has had a restaurant for 12 years. However, in the place of the seasonally operating Cinnamon a completely new restaurant has just opened called Matador. As the name suggests: quality meat has a significant role here.

23 years in Etyek

When Argentin Carlos Coelho first arrived in Etyek in 1996, the village was quiet, too quiet with no winery open offering tastings. He, being a businessmann, accepted the challenge and started to bring life to the „vineyard of Budapest”, and gradually Haraszthy Winery has become one of the leading estate of the wine region, and by now with its 143 hectares it owns the largest vineyard in Etyek. Their wines can boast several national and international acknowledgements, for example their Pinot Noir 2017has been selected the Best Hungarian Varietal Wineat VinAgora international wine competition. Cinnamon, the earlier restaurant of the winery was the favourite place of many connoisseurs and a popular location for wedding parties: the pool, the stunning view and the superb steaks brought success to the place. Now the renovations and changes have been made to please old guests and of course to attract new guests as well not only to have lunch, but to spend a whole day in Etyek. The amphiteater (opened last year) offers concerts, the winery offers different flights of wines for tasting and the winery is available to visit.

Steaks, sausages, salamis

Knowing the roots of the owner it is no surprise that Argentin beef is a key to brand new Matador along with other quality meat from all over the world. As for the sausages and cold cuts: the estate makes its own meat products just as well as they bake their own bread and grow some of their vegetables themselves. Matador is not a fine dining restaurant, it rather defines itself as a steakhouse and a bistro. The restaurant has a capacity to seat up to 70 people, and it is open all year.

Wines from here and overseas

Carlos Coelho owns vineyard in Argentin Mendoza and also in California, therefore at Madador wines of their world class regions are avaliable as well along with local Haraszthy wines from Etyek. Mexican–American chef, Diego Bautista aims to create the perfect match for wines from all three wine regions. Visitors must try Haraszthy Sauvignon Blanc, an award winning, crispy delicacy, lunch should start with méthode traditionelle sparkling wine of the estate, and if the sun shines and we feel like staying by the pool instead of leaving, a chilled glass of juicy, aromatic Sir Irsai areated sparkling wine is the best choice. Most of the wines are available by the glass!
