Mouthwatering cakes from Budapest by CNN Travel

A few days ago CNN Travel recommended Budapest as one of the best winter destinations of the world, and on Christmas day the prestigious site published another article – this time about the most famous and delicious sweets of the capital of Hungary. „It’s possible there’s no better place than Budapest to while away an afternoon in a coffee house with a cake — or three. Blending different cultural influences, histories and traditions, Budapest’s cake scene offers a delectable range of pastries, tarts and sweet treats”– says Francesca Street, author of the article. The world famous Dobos cake, the Strudel with infinite varietals, the Jewish Flódni– all can well be paired with Hungarian Tokaji Aszú, the botrytised sweet wine of Hungary. Grand Tokaj Tokaji Aszú 5 puttonyos 2013 is of outstanding quality and has a good price value ratio as well (19 euros ex cellar): „Stunning complexity on the nose: botrytis from the aszú berries, peach, orange zest, walnut brittle, fig and exotic flowers, with a touch of dill at the end. Extremely clear fruitiness on the palate, orange, birch, pear and apricot notes combined with flavours of white chocolate and vanilla as well. The refined acidity keeps the structure firm, long, yet rounded. The mouth is full of lime and grapefruit and some matured, coffee notes during the prolonged finish. A genuine great wine of Tokaj at the beginning of its development with great potential.”
