The best of the biggest – Danube wine region contest results
Tokaj is the most wellknown wine region of Hungary, Villány, Eger and Szekszárd are famous for their red wines, Somló is the tiny star with its volcanic soil, Balaton wine region is lucky its tourism – however, there are many more relatively unknown wine regions in Hungary. Duna (the river Danube in Hungarian) broader wine region consist of three regions: Kunság, Hajós–Baja and Csongrád, and they account for the 40% of the vineyards of Hungary. This huge broader wine region is the home of several indigenous aromatic grapes, Cserszegi Fűszeres, Irsai Olivér are typical here, altogether with grapes you have never heard of (and neither have we…) Recently a competition was announced to give names to some relatively unknown, resistant grapes. Due to the unexpected large number of entries, the decision has not been made yet.
The best of the show
The award ceremony of Duna broader wine region and Hajós–Baja wine region was held on 13 July. The event was held in the baroque castle of Hajós. As for the entries: this year 149 wines entered (62 white, 33 rosé and 54 red wines). Altogether 33 gold medals and 73 silver medals were awarded.

The 25th vintage
The most successful winery of the contest is Koch Winery, which has recently celebrated the 25th vintage of the winery. Csaba Koch, the owner of the winery works together with Petar Cindric and Pál Kozma professors, they have been experimenting with 33 resistant grapes, and their aim is to make absolutely chemical free wines. In the past ten years the winery has achieved significant results: 5 gold and 5 silver medals in international wine contests, 53 gold and 19 silver medals in national contests and 98 gold and 13 silver medals in regional contests. Frisch premium wines of Koch Winery are really fresh – they were introduced at the anniversary celebration in June. Frisch “family” includes vineyard selected, high quality Irsai Olivér, Cserszegi Fűszeres, Chardonnay, Merlot and a rosé blend. As we can see above among the results, Frisch Cserszegi Fűszeres has immediately proved its great quality.
