The only Hungarian world champion Chardonnay
“Eger is the Hungarian Burgundy” – as Eger producers keep saying, and it must be true. Similar climate and soil – and indeed great Chardonnay wines. Thummerer Chardonnay Battonage 2019 is the only gold medal winning Hungarian wine at the latest edition of Chardonnay du Monde! (Bâtonnage is spelled differently in Hungary for some unknown reason.)
“The 28th annual Chardonnay du Monde competition was held on 9 to 12 March 2021 at Château des Ravatys, at Saint Lager in the Burgundy wine region of France. 604 wine samples from 36 countries were tasted. The judges tasted in accordance with the International rules, and they strictly followed Quality Assurance procedures.” Hungarian producers received 8 silver medals as well – for example another Chardonnay from Eger was awarded: Kovács Nimród Battonage Monopole Chardonnay 2017.
Vilmos Thummerer, founder of Thummerer winery commented: “I am very glad not only for our winery, but for Hungary. Our country is the 4th regarding the number of medals after France, Switzerland and Canada. Chardonnay du Monde is a very rigorous competition, therefore the medals have high prestige.”
