330 wines were judged at the latest Villány Regional Wine Competition. The Champion is Cuvée 7 by Sauska, followed by 8 Grand Gold medals. The 4th best wine, Grand Gold winner and the best Syrah is Jackfall Premium Syrah 2020 with 95 points. Only 2500 bottles were made, and the demand is high, so if you want to have this great wine for yourself, you had better hurry!

Another damned good wine

Jackfall wines are not only elegant, but they have a special character as well, they have the “X factor”, which makes them stand out of the crowd. “Wow, this is damned good” – said Aljoscha Wright, the buyer of Oxford Wine Company, when he tasted Jackfall Cabernet Franc 3H 2019. The same wine was selected to be one of the Super 12 wines by the Hungarian Circle of Wine Writers. “Do Jackfall wines have an importer in Poland? What a pity, I would love to import them” – said Leszek Ziemba Polish wine importer when he first tasted Jackfall wines.
And the wines continue their glorious march. The best Syrah of the latest edition of the Villány wine contest was presented last weekend, before the Franc & Franc Forum in Villány, where invited foreign professionals had the chance to taste. Stefan Pegatzky renowned wine writer was so impressed by Jackfall Premium Syrah 2020, he commented that it was the best Syrah he had tasted in Hungary (and he tasted several ones, since earlier this year he participated in the Hungarian Wine Summit). He wrote the following about the wine: “A fresh yet dense Syrah with lively acidity and plenty of spice.”

Layered wine with silky tannins

The year 2020 brought moderate, balanced weather. Spring was cooler than usual, but the hot, dry summer allowed the blue grapes to ripen perfectly. This vintage was particularly favourable for Syrah: thanks to slow, even ripening, the wine has deep, concentrated aromas and a delicate, elegant structure.
“Jackfall Syrah Premium 2020 is not a wine of power, but of elegance. The harmony of spicy and fruity notes, velvety texture, and balanced structure make it special. This wine offers a long-lasting yet delicately layered experience – even after one glass, the spicy fruit and silky chocolate linger in the aftertaste.
Deep ruby colour, aromas of black pepper, cloves, violets, and ripe forest fruits. The barrel ageing brings out delicate notes of vanilla and dark chocolate, which blend beautifully with the natural fruitiness. Full-bodied and layered on the palate. Silky tannins, delicate acidity and a long, spicy finish create a perfect balance.”
Food pairing: Jackfall team recommends the wine to pair with steak, venison dishes, matured hard cheese, and as for desserts a chocolate mousse made of 70% chocolate would work well.
Ageing potential: 6–7 years, but it is enjoyable right now as well
