Prestigious international wine contests are undoubtedly important, but there is also an extra value of the regional wine contests as well. Most of the judges are local winemakers, they really know what the ideal Egri Bikavér should be, what the region is capable. To be acknowledged by the fellow winemakers, well, it has a special value. This year Eger Regional Wine Contest results are out: 169 wines entered from 29 wineries. Altogether 3 grand gold, 33 gold and 12 silver medals were given. The best of the 7 categories were also chosen, and Thummerer Winery has won two of the 7 categories! (Plus 6 more gold medals and 4 silver medals.)

Now, let us intruduce the grand gold winner, Best Egri Bikavér!

Egri Bikavér blend has to contain at least wines of 4 grapes, and Kékfrankos must be the most important. At Thummerer Winery Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah wines were added to the Kékfrankos base. The ageing took 18 months in wooden barrels, with full malolactic fermentation, followed by a long period of bottle ageing to increase its complexity.

The winery about the vintage: “2021 was a successful year for us, especially regarding the crop. The weather was so warm that we could harvest fully ripened grapes with high sugar level. To obtain the Superior title, the wine has to be at a higher level from the harvesting to the actual taste, so we only make this type of wine from the best vintages.”
