Wine festival on the green outskirts of Budapest

This weekend – on 14–15 June – it will make sense to head to the suburbs of Budapest instead of going downtown. Vingardium, as the name suggests, is an event full of wine in a garden-like location. Pest, the more modern part of the Hungarian capital is not appealing beyond „Örs vezér tér”, huge and boring block of flats rule the streets. However, in the middle of the concrete jungle there is a green island called Erzsébet liget (’Elizabeth bosket’), which serves as a fabulous venue for Vingardium for the fourth time this year. The festival is family friendly, every member of the family will find something to his liking: kids’ programmes, masterclassess, concerts, delicious street food and of course, a lot of wine. 40 wineries sell wine by the glass, mostly from Hungary, but some foreign wines are available as well, for example by ’Kisbécs’ (’Little Vienna’), a wine shop specializing in Austrian wine. Villány, the mediterranean wine region of Hungary is represented by Attila Gere’s new project called Gere & Schubert, their refreshing rosé is a good start for the festival. Koch Winery from Hajós–Baja will „illustrate” a masterclass with their ’Frisch’ wine family, these young and crispy wines will help festival goers stay fresh all day long. And when the sun goes down, Teleki red wines from Villány are advised to taste. Kékfrankos, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot – several reasons to participate. The festival entry is free of charge, but a festival glass is obligatory to buy for 2000 HUF (6 euros).
