Wine of the week: the new Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc

Etyeki Kúria is wellknown for its crystal clear, elegant, fruity wines, and recently, due to head winemaker Sándor Mérész experimentation with traditional techniques is also in focus. ’Mérész Sándor Projekt’ includes wines like an orange wine made of Pinot Gris or Kira, a natural wine made of Királyleányka. The newly released Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc is also a unique wine: it is neither bottle fermented nor aerated, but vinified by must fermentation – which is completely identical with the method of the famous Italian Asti sparkling wines. After being fermented in a pressurized tank, the wine is aged for two months on fine lees. Unlike most of the Italian examples, the sparkling wine of Etyeki Kúria is not sweet, it falls into the brut category with its 10.5 g/l residual sugar. Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most important varieties of the estate, and with this new venture Sándor Mérész continues exploring the abilities of the variety. As the winemaker explained to a wine writer of Pécsi Borozó, the new release was inspired by by a South African Sauvignon Blanc sparkling wine. Interestingly enough first the idea was born – to make a fruity, zesty sparkling of the variety – and then the method was adjusted to the desired product. „Aromas of yellow grapefruit, yellow pear, light candy notes. Delicate mousse, white fleshed peach accompanied by lemon, candied lemon zest and juicy yellow pear.”
