We are not among the most successful countries at the 28th edition of German Mundus Vini wine contest, but the result is not bad. Hungary might be far from the most successful Italy (734 medals) or Spain (703), still our small country won more medals than Georgia (18), Argentina (15) or China (10). We also say congratulations to our neighbours: Austria won 96 medals, Romania 29, Croatia 20 and Serbia 13.

“Almost 3,000 wines from all over the world were awarded medals at the 28th MUNDUS VINI International Wine Awards in Neustadt, Germany. The great wine qualities in the competition convinced the jury of experts, who blindly and professionally tasted 7,300 wines from 39 wine-growing countries of the world on a total of 20 tasting days in small groups this year.”  (Press release of Mundus Vini)

Most the medals are gold!

Out of our 19 medals 14 shine gold! Like every year, our dessert wines “harvest” gold medals easily – for example Grand Tokaj Koronás Tokaji Aszú 5 puttonyos. However, this year Hungary could prove its potential to make exciting dry wines of indigenous varieties as well. A good example is Tornai Top Selection Juhfark 2019. As for international varieties, Hungary can display exceptional wines, too, especially in the southern wine regions. Tivald Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 from Eszterbauer Winery, Szekszárd is again among the gold medal winners.

“Deep, dark colour. Medium intensity on the nose, but complex, full of blackberry, blueberry, bitter chocolate and bonbon filled with cognac infused sour cherry. On the palate firm, but still pleasant tannins, pepper and Christmas spices. The alcohol is high, but the structure is still balanced. The wine is matured, complex, characteristic with beautiful barrel notes. Good length with a wide range of aromas.“
